I believe in constructive criticism and honesty. I can adapt my review style to fit the kind of feedback an author is looking for (e.g., developmental suggestions, fine-tuning, proofreading, etc.), but will always try to be as encouraging and helpful as possible.
I'm good at...
Plotting, characterization, dialogue, structure/pacing, and professional considerations. I can also do serviceable technical editing/proofreading, but I'm much better with developmental/creative feedback.
Favorite Genres
I read almost everything. I particularly love genre fiction (mystery/thriller and science fiction/fantasy especially) and nonfiction of all kinds.

Hi Hyperiongate .

Thank you for entering Round Seven of the 2008 Short Fiction Competition! I was hoping to see an entry from you one of these days, and you certainly didn't disappoint! I really enjoyed this piece, particularly the way you developed Jessop's character and stayed with him through the entire process, so the reader could get a feel for the environment as the story developed. I also thought the crime itself was brilliantly conceived and definitely worthy of Jessop's skills. *Smile*

One small typo:

"The sentient-net did a worldwide search for someone capable of either installing..."

Other than that, really great job. Keep up the good work and thanks for entering! I hope to see more entries from you in future rounds.

Please keep in mind that the following are only my opinions... and that as the author, your opinion is the one that matters most. Please consider or disregard the following comments as you see fit:


WHAT WORKED

I like the emotional undertones of this piece, and the way you used the secret passageway merely as a device to get to a more satisfying, engaging character study. This isn't about some character finding a secret passageway... it's about a character dealing with her own emotional issues, which I find incredibly fascinating. I particularly like the sense of humor that you instill in the narrator's voice throughout the piece. Well done!


WHAT NEEDS WORK

I thought that it took a little while to get into the story. I was almost hoping that the door would have been discovered right away, so that the majority of the story could either focus on the protagonist's journey through the door... or what happened once she realized where she was. Other than that, though, I thought this was a marvelous story.
