Monday, August 27, 2012 ~ Day 27 of the 30-Day Blogging Challenge prompt is "If I could lighten up, I'd let myself..."

"If I could lighten up, I'd let myself..." What would I let myself do? There are certain activities I would never consider doing except under duress. There are other activities I would never consider doing even under duress. There are other activities I would consider doing if I could just lighten up or at least grow wings.

I think I would look good with a pair of wings growing out of my shoulder blades. I want a pair of wings strong enough to let me sail the air current above the cities and mountains. I want to fly with eagles. I want to fly among the strong winged predators instead of scurrying along the ground with their prey.

"If I could lighten up, I'd let myself..." fly around the world in a hot air balloon. I would not care if it took 90 or 190 days just as long as I could see the earth flowing under me like the incoming or out going tide.

"If I could lighten up, I'd let myself..." I would buy a ticket on a Russian rocket to the International Space Station. I would stand at the port and watch the Earth, its clouds floating islands on an ocean of air. I would compose odes to the continents unmarred by human created boundaries. I would send greetings to every city, town, and village on Earth; I would bless their inhabitants and wish them a successful and happy life.

"If I could lighten up, I'd let myself..." I would fly through the cold hydrogen of interstellar space looking for the life forms I know are out there. Looking for life forms on the surface or in the oceans of undiscovered planets waiting, for their chance to fly free of planetary gravity through the corridors of interstellar and intergalactic space.

"If I could lighten up, I'd let myself..." grow wings. Wings that would carry me anywhere on the planet or in the universe I wanted to go. I would grow wings that respond to my faith rather then my fears.

"If I could lighten up, I'd let myself..." take myself lightly, which would allow me to grow wings so that I could fly with the angels, who already take themselves lightly.

Challenge prompt is Tell us about your week, include your favourite challenge entry, and try and throw in a shout-out to a non-challenge blog on WDC that you love.

My Week in Review

It’s been an interesting and stressful week, but then every week seems to be a stressful and interesting week. I won’t go into to sordid because I have a feeling, just from the events of today, that this coming week is going to be even more interesting and stressful (all thought this could be an over reaction to today’s events).

I am posting the links to two poems I wrote this week. The first is "I Am [E] and the second "Milestones [ASR]. Please feel free to review and/or comment on either or both of them.

My favorite challenge entries

Two challenge entries spoke to my soul and they were both by blainecindy. The first was "Invalid Entry, which told the story of a cheerleading *Angel*. The second was "Invalid Entry about the burial of a beloved pet.

Non-challenge blogs of the week

The two non-challenge blogs that I found interesting were "Invalid Item by shoumojit and "Invalid Item by glo-stick.

Saturday, August 25, 2012 ~ Day 25 of the 30-Day Blogging Challenge prompt is There is a full moon and you hear a noise outside your bedroom window. You go to the window, look out, and see one of your neighbors burying something in your backyard.

It was one second after midnight. The day had just passed from Monday to Tuesday and I still couldn’t sleep. I knew why I couldn’t sleep, Kevin’s shift had just changed from afternoon to graveyard. I was sleeping alone for the first time in our married life; I didn’t like it, but the pay for the graveyard shift was twice as much as he could earn working the morning or afternoon shift.

Because of the recession, I had lost my job and we needed to money. We weren’t behind on the house payment, Kevin’s paycheck had always been enough to make that, but we were behind in everything else. We had prioritized the other bills and this month we needed to pay the power bill or have no electricity. Unfortunately, repairs on the car had cost almost as much as the electric bill. When graveyard shift opened up, Kevin applied for it and since he had more seniority then any of the other in-house applicants, he got the shift.

As I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling or watching the clock, I heard something in the backyard. Shit, I thought as I got out of bed, I suppose someone is trying to break in. I went to the window and saw, not a stranger, but my next door neighbor Sylvia digging a hole in my backyard. On the ground beside her, the full moon illuminated a large aluminum container.

I put on my robe and went to the patio door. Sitting at the closed patio doors was Specs, our Springer spaniel. I fastened her leash to her collar and together we went into the backyard.

“I, Jane,” Sylvia put down the shovel, “I guess your wondering what I’m burring.”

“Yes,” Specs went to the cooking pot and tried to remove the lid. “Considering that pot is too small for Harry’s body, even if you cut him up.”

“I...” she sighed, “I burned the spaghetti this time...”

“And Harry didn’t smell it.”

“He’s working,” she picked up the shovel, “he won’t be home until noon today. If he finds out I wasted anymore food, he’ll... he’ll chain me to the bed again.”

“That doesn’t explain why you’re burring the pot of spaghetti in my backyard.”

“Jane,” she started to cry, “if I burry it in my backyard or put it in the trash, he’ll find it.”

“Sylvia, return to your house, put your cat in her carrier, pack a bag for yourself, and come back here.”

“Jane, I can’t endanger you!”

“You won’t,” I patted her arm, “I’m taking you to the Women’s shelter and Gertrude to Kevin’s mother. She always wanted a calico cat. She will enjoy cat setting until we find you an attorney and a safer place to live.”

“All right,” she started to pick up the pot of spaghetti.

“Leave that, I’ll put it in my trash; I doubt that Harry will go through a neighbor’s trashcan looking for burnt food and Kevin will find the idea of me burning spaghetti amusing.”

Thursday, August 23, 2012 ~ Day 23 of the 30-Day Blogging Challenge prompt is "In this day and age where texting seems to be all the rage, do you think this practice has improved or broken down the lines of personal communication and why?"

Texting, like any other technological activity, is neither good nor bad. Depending on how it is used texting can both improve and break down the lines of personal communication. Used properly, texting can open and improve lines of communication. Texting, like e-mail, hand-written letters, telephone calls, and talking, is a tool of communication and when used in conjunction with other communication tools it improves and opens lines of communication.

When people use texting as the only communications tool then it severs and breaks the lines of personal communication between individuals. Texting does not allow individuals easily carry on in-depth conversations. You can learn only so much about another individual by texting, but if you really want to get to know someone, you have to talk to him or her face to face, over the telephone, or exchange letters.

If you really want to know what another person is like, you have to have face-to-face contact with that person on a regular basis. Texting is a wonderful tool to keep in touch with a family member or friend in anther city or state, but it does not reveal a person’s personality and it does not let you get to know the individual’s idiosyncrasies.

Texting is a double-edged razor blade. When used properly it enhances communication between individuals. When used improperly it closes the line of communication.

Wednesday, August 22, 2012 ~ Day 22 of the 30-Day Blogging Challenge prompt is "Using a work of fiction, that is not your own, what creature would like to have as a pet?"

I have thought about this all day. The pet I would like to have is a Pegasus with a unicorn-like horn. I am not sure where in my reading I encountered this creature. I am not sure what of the name of this creature, but I want this creature as a pet.

I have read so many books of fiction over the years. This creature has remained with me. This is the first creature that came to mind when I read the question. I have racked my brain concerning this animal, but I still cannot remember the name of the story or even the author.

I can visualize this creature flying. I can visualize its golden horn glistening in the sun, but I cannot remember the name of the story or the author. I know I read the story several years ago, but I do not know what happened to the book. Perhaps I checked the book out of the library. Perhaps I read the story in a science fiction and fantasy magazine. The only thing I remember about the creature is its description.

If I could remember, the name of the author or the title of the story I would do a search of the internet. It is strange sometimes I remember the name of an author or the title of a story and parts of the plot, but in this case, I only remember the creature. I am not even sure why I remember the creature; perhaps because I find these two mythological animals I find fascinating.

Tuesday, August 21, 2012 ~ Day 21 of the 30-Day Blogging Challenge prompt is "Explain what you would do if someone asked you to write a biography of your life (however long or short it may be right now)."

I would agree to a biography under certain conditions. I want my struggles as a caregiver documented because it will help others going through similar situations. I want the reason I became a Baha’i documented because it reveal the spiritual side of my existence. However, there are certain periods in my life that I do not care to discuss with anyone because, with the exception of God, those periods are no one else’s business.

My opinion of the majority of tell all biographies (especially those written during the person’s life by the person or a ghostwriter consulting with the person) is that they are the written equivalent of plastic surgery. They enhance or embellish the parts of a person’s life that the person was unhappy with or did not like. The parts of my life that made me unhappy, I prefer to keep to myself unless they reveal lessons learned about life or me and then I want to be as honest as humanly possible.

Being a caregiver is stressful and I am always happy with the situation. However, I have learned a great deal through the experience. I do not mind discussing the stress and the lessons learned. I also want people to know why I became a Baha’i; I will discuss that part of my life.

"Here in this body are the sacred rivers; here are the sun and moon, as well as the pilgrimage places. I have not encountered another temple as blissful as my own body" ~ sahara

Dawn meditations
With my prayer beads in hand
I chant
God’s Most Great Name
Ninety-five times
I feel tranquility flowing
With each breath I exhale or inhale
My body
My mind
My soul
Begins the day without stress
Without worry
Tranquil
Peaceful
Looking forward to the blessings
And the tests
Of a new day

My body is the container that holds my soul on the material plan. My body is the butterfly larva feeding on the food of matter, on the blessing and the tests that develop my soul and prepare it for life on the spiritual plane.

My soul is a butterfly
The Lepidoptera
Waiting in a temple of my body
For the moment the pupa case to open
Its wings dry
And it takes flight
On the spiritual plane
In the Garden of Paradise
Beneath the Tree of Life

The rest of my week was all right. I think that’s about everything I can think of at the moment. I am sitting her staring at the screen or out the window at the beautiful clouds. Sunday morning was stressful, which usually affect my thought processes. Maybe I’ll finish off the ice cream in the freezer tonight.

Saturday, August 18, 2012 ~ Day 19 of the 30-Day Blogging Challenge prompt is Mind Reading

*Smile*

I wouldn’t like the read the minds of other drivers!
They scar me enough,
without knowing what they think
when they drive;
I know they’re not thinking about the traffic,
the road conditions,
other drivers,
or pedestrians
when they drive.

*Smile* *Smile*

Lora sit cross-legged on the bed watching her aunt put on make-up.

“Aunt Sarah,” Lora sighted, “why is it called mind reading?”

“Uh,” Sarah Norris could not get used to her niece’s unexpected odd questions. “What are you talking about, Lora?”

“Well,” she frowned, “Rodger says his mother can read his mind. That was why he didn’t want me to tell him what we got her for her birthday. I mean when I think, I don’t see words running or flowing across my brain. I hear my thoughts thinking and sometimes I see pictures, but I don’t see words; I mean not like I do on my Kindle. Does Mrs. Harris see words when she reads Rodger’s mind?”

“I don’t know, Lora, why,” Sarah smiled wickedly, “don’t you ask Mrs. Harris tonight. I’m sure she would be happy to answer your question.”

“OK!” Lora jumped off the bed and ran out of the room.

Friday, August 17, 2012 ~ Day 17 of the 30-Day Blogging Challenge prompt is Tell us your favourite funny scene in a movie or TV show!

I’ve been thinking about this most of the day. Thinking about all the comedies, I watched on television and at the movies. I think my favorite comedy of all times is I Love Lucy; perhaps because I remember watching the original show on television. While I don’t remember the first television my Grandfather bought, I do remember having a T.V. in the house all through my childhood.

My Grandpa Newland was one of those men who, when a new technology came out, he had to have it. Grandpa wasn’t afraid of new things or new technology because he considered them helpful, time saving, as well as labor saving.

Anyway getting back to the I Love Lucy shows. I’m trying to decided on my favorite scene. There was one show I remember, in this show there was a teenager infatuated with Desi. For some reason the girl couldn’t comprehend the age difference between her and Desi, so Lucy decided she would do something about it.

In the scene I’m thinking about Lucy had invited the young lady to the apartment. Then Lucy dressed up as an elderly woman. Desi could have dressed up like an elderly man, but it’s Lucy’s part that I’m remembering. Lucy pretended to have false teeth and be hard of hearing. Lucy took her teeth out of her mouth. I thought the scene was funny when I first saw it and even today, in reruns I still laugh.

I think I might find that scene funnier today because I have false teeth myself. I take my teeth out every night and put them in a container. In fact, I find myself laughing at my false teeth and me, but I could be remember the I Love Lucy scene.

Thursday, August 15, 2012 ~ Day 16 of the 30-Day Blogging Challenge prompt is Discuss ~ "The American Idol TV show gets more people voting than a normal political election. One reason that's been stated is because voting is simple and easy for them but it is difficult and inconvenient in normal elections."

"The American Idol TV show gets more people voting than a normal political election. One reason that's been stated is because voting is simple and easy for them but it is difficult and inconvenient in normal elections." Bull crap!!

American Idol gets more people to vote because it is much more entertaining to watch ordinary people make fools of themselves on television then it is to watch ordinary politician make fools of themselves on televisions. In addition, it is much easier to tell if ordinary people are lying about their talent then it is to tell which politician is lying about whom.

I am 65 years old. I have voted in every presidential and nonpresidential election since I was 21. Voting in an election today takes a bit more effort then it did when I was 21, but it is no more difficult and in some cases may be easier.

When I was 21, I did not have to register before Election Day. I was able to go to my polling place, register, and then vote. Today, in order to vote, you have to register before Election Day, but it is not that difficult to register (at least not yet).

When I was 21, I went into a voting booth, which had a curtain to close while I was voting. I went into the booth, where a found a contraption with paper ballots and a little punch to indicate my choice. Today, I use an electronic voting machine. I go into my polling place and give the clerk my name. Then the clerk looks up my name and I sign in the registers book to indicate I voted. The clerk then gives me a computerized card that contains my precinct and party. Another clerk directs me to an unoccupied voting machine and I put the little card in the slot. The information and instruction appear on the screen and I make my choice. If a person needs more help then the instructions on the screen there is an official at the polling place who can give assistance.

If a person does not want to vote in a political election, then he or she can find any excuse not to vote in a local or national election, but it is not the difficulty or the effort it takes to vote that prevents that person from not voting. There are 1001 excuses not to vote, but there is only one reason to vote. The reason any individual votes is personal and each individual must find that reason for him or herself.

Wednesday, August 15, 2012 ~ Day 15 of the 30-Day Blogging Challenge prompt is "If you could have personally witnessed one event in history, what would you want to have seen?"

Background Note: The Festival of Ridvan is a twelve-day celebration beginning on April 21 and ending on May 2. The first day (April 21), the ninth day (April 29), and the twelfth day (May 2) are Holy Days on which work is suspended. This Festival celebrates the Declaration of Baha’u’llah which occurred in 1863.

I would have liked to witness the Declaration of Baha’u’llah in the Garden of Ridvan in 1863. The Garden of Ridvan was located on the Tigress River near the city of Bagdad. This is where Baha’u’llah spent twelve day (April 21 to May 2) in 1863 and it is where He declared His mission. I would like to witness this historic event in person.

Tuesday, August 14, 2012 ~ Day 14 of the 30-Day Blogging Challenge prompt is Write about the changes in fashion over the past couple of generations and compare it to the current fashion trends. What clothes are you most comfortable wearing?

The Urban Dictionary definitions of fashionista are (1) anyone “devoted to fashion clothing, particularily unique or high fashion”, (2) women “with a penchant for shopping and a natural flair for combining both current and vintage fashionable trends” and (3) a person (usually a woman) who focuses her interest on appearance, clothing, and make-up as opposed to anything else. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fashionista

I am neither a fashionista nor a fashion whore, but fall somewhere between the two. I wear comfortable and casual clothing. I like long skirts that cover my compression stockings; however, I will wear short dresses (knee length or above) with those same compression stockings. I am a fashion enigma.

I like the fashions of the Roaring Twenties. I like the fashions of the Flower Children. I like poodle skirts; in fact, I think I owned a poodle skirt once. The only thing I know about modern fashions and fashion trends is what I see worn by famous and infamous women on television, in the movies, and sometimes on the streets of Las Vegas.

If I got the chance and could afford it, I would wear designer clothing because most of the designer clothing I see I usually like. Friends and family gave me most of the clothing in my closet. I have not bought myself a new piece of clothing this century and I want to go shopping for new clothes. I need to go shopping for new clothes and this need has nothing to do with therapy. All though, I suppose such a shopping trip would be therapeutic.

Monday, August 13, 2012 ~ Day 13 of the 30-Day Blogging Challenge prompt is Imagine the abstract part of you (mind, soul, spirit) is a house. What rooms are in the house? Which room is your favorite, or are you afraid of, or do you find yourself in most? Describe one of these rooms in detail, or give us an overview of the whole house full of rooms.

The Mansion of my Soul grows larger every year because each year of life adds a new room to the count.

Each room has a bookcase containing the journals of the months, which I have written in the ink of my life’s vein.

The light of God shining through the Lamp of His Glory illuminates each room.

Setting in the rooms are mementos of my life in the shapes of tests passed and failed.

I created the items that furnish my soul’s mansion through the expressions of my joys, love, faith, sorrows, hates, and fears. The interaction of my soul and ego creates the furniture.

Decisions! Decisions! Decisions! I think I’ve blogged or ranted before about how I feel about decisions. All that aside, I have made a decision on my favorite blog post of the past week.

Drum Roll

My favorite blog entry is "Ever Met A Phor ? by Wordsmitty ✍️ . The title, Ever Met a Phor?, caught my attention and aroused my curiosity. Even though, I had a good idea that the subject was metaphors, I had to read the blog entry to make sure and learn the author’s opinion of the subject.

There was one paragraph in this entry that I can’t stop thinking about. This paragraph spoke to me and to my muse.
A metaphor sings sweetly, and excess becomes a choir. They are beacons of light to common speech. Stories dance off the page in a rainbow of colors rather than let text pantomime a tale.

In fact, the paragraph was so encouraging that I attempted to use metaphors when I wrote today’s entry in my offline blog.
http://poet999writingthoughts.blogspot.com/2012/08/haibun-haiku-raindrops-on-con...

Another thing I liked about Wordsmitty’s entry was the quotes. I like quotes because they give insight into another person’s mind, they are nice to use in meditation, and they provoke thought.

Saturday, August 11, 2012 ~ Day 11 of the 30-Day Blogging Challenge prompt is It's Creation Saturday! "Future Imperfect" - write a story or poem about what these two words could mean. Include some elements from your real life.

Future Imperfect:
A funhouse mirror hides
reality
through distorted images;
dark and ominous omens
conceal
tomorrow’s happiness
in dire predictions of disaster.

Future History:
Attempts to foretell
and warn
against technological catastrophes,
alien invasions,
or the divergent paths humanity may walk
by incorporating events into
science fiction stories.

Imperfect predictions
sometimes come to me through dreams
that appear to warn
of impending calamities
or victories,
but they never reveal the path
to avoid the ill
or accomplish the good;
so I live
knowing that tomorrow may bring
triumph or tragedy
to myself and humanity.

I live each day to write....
what?
Future imperfect history,
fantasy,
poetry,
or is it that my soul must inscribe
its journey
toward eternity.

Friday, August 10, 2012 ~ Day 10 of the 30-Day Blogging Challenge prompt is "Tell us about someone in your life, or someone else's life, who uses metaphors in an extreme manner. For example: An old Aunt used to always say "You're in the right church, but the wrong pew", if you were looking for something and were close to finding it."

I don’t know anyone who uses metaphors to the extreme. I have a tendency to use metaphors, but not the in way the way one would expect or to the extreme. For instance, instead of saying "You're in the right church, but the wrong pew" I would probably say one of the following “You’re in the right pew, but the wrong church.” or “You’re in the wrong pew, but the right church.”

One of my favorite metaphors is “Don’t just stand there, do something.” This refers to someone needing to take action immediately. However, when I say this metaphor it comes out “Don’t just doing something, stand there.”

Other Metaphors that I rewrite or fracture

Instead of “Take the bull by the horns.” I say “Take the cat by the whiskers.”

Instead of being “on the horns of a dilemma” I’m “under the claws of a dilemma”.

I have to admit that I do get some strange looks because sometimes it takes people a while to figure out what I’m talking about. The strange looks don’t bother me because the light in their eyes when the figure out what I’m talking about is wonderful and exciting. Besides, if you use a metaphor too much it becomes a cliché.

Thursday, August 9, 2012 ~ Day 9 of the 30-Day Blogging Challenge prompt is "Opinion Piece - Write about the biggest news story on your local news channel today. Give us your opinion on whatever the news story is."

Frightened drivers dialed 911 when they saw the billboards along Interstate 15. Hanging, by a noose, from each of the billboards was a life-like dummy. The message painted on one of the billboards was “Hope you’re happy Wall St.” and from the other “Dying for work”. As soon as possible, the authorities or the companies owning the billboards removed the pseudo human corpses and the messages.

Who painted the messages and hung the dummies? No one knows or if they do they’re not talking. Is this gorilla art or vandalism? It depends on your point of view. Are these billboards dangerous? I have driven I15 during rush hour traffic and something like this could distract a driver enough to cause a traffic accident.

I know the artist-vandal who created the billboards wanted to send a message. This type of message could cause traffic accidents and death on I15 especially at the speed cars travel that rout during rush hour or any other time of the day or night. I15 is high-speed nonstop traffic, unless there is an accident. Accidents on I15 result in casualties and sometimes death. Interstate 15 is not a safe place to put this type of political message.

Wednesday, August 8, 2012 ~ Day 8 of the 30-Day Blogging Challenge prompt is "How about a piece on Murder?"

"How about a piece on Murder?" A piece that is my interpretation of the prompt that doesn’t have to be an opinion piece and can’t be fiction. Therefore, I will write my random thought on the subject.

MurderRedrum

This is the first thing that comes to mind and I know it came from a movie, but I’m not sure of the title. In fact, I’m not even sure if I watched the entire movie. If I saw it on television, then I know I didn’t because I was probably channel surfing at the same time.

This is the wonderful thing about the invention of the remote control. I can watch a scary movie on television and when it gets to the bloody part I can change channels; if I remember two things (1) where I put the remote and (2) to put fresh batteries in it.

Screaming bloody murder

I’ve often used the term screaming bloody murder, but I didn’t know what it meant until my Mother’s Alzheimer’s disease got worse. One morning, the C.N.A. was giving Mom her shower and Mom screamed bloody murder. Mom screamed, “You’re killing me!” so loudly that one of the neighbors heard and called the police.

Mass Murder in the news

We (myself or every other human being in the world) aren’t safe anywhere. It doesn’t matter if we go to a theater to see a movie, to our house of worship to pray, to a political rally, or to our place of business. We aren’t even safe in our own homes. I’m not being paranoid here, there isn’t any safety from the murderer determined to commit murder.

Since there is not safety, I have to suck it up, go out into the world, and conduct business as usual. I can say a prayer of protection when I get up each morning, before I back my car out of the garage, and before I go to bed each night. I can lock all my car doors while driving. I can lock all the doors and windows in my house before I go to bed. I can keep my cell phone charged and within easy reach. I can be aware of my surroundings, but I can’t protect myself from random violence.

I can watch the people around me. I can notice the individuals who act odd or weird. I also know that 99.9% of the time those aren’t the people I have to worry about. It’s the normal appearing John Doe or Jane Doe that are the most dangerous and the most likely to cause mayhem which results in murder.
