Wednesday, July 18, 2012 ~ July 2012 Unofficial: FOLLOW ME BLOGGING CHALLENGE prompt is "My Very First Job by Wordsmitty ✍️

My first job
was a long time ago
in a galaxy far away
or at least it seemed that way;
it was another world
any way.

My first job... what was my first job? I’ve worked numerous jobs, in my 65 years. I remember most of them. Some of them I would like to forget. Some of them I ask myself “What were you thinking at the time?” Other I enjoyed and if I didn’t enjoy them then I could laugh at the weird customers and people I worked with.

My first job, I think it was as a carhop. No, wait a minute... that wasn’t my first job. I worked as a carhop in Blackwell, Oklahoma. I had moved back to Blackwell to live with my Grandpa and Grandma Newland. My first job was in either Shawnee or Oklahoma City. That was a long time ago and it seemed like a galaxy far away.

I think, my first job was in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. My mother and stepfather owned or ran a restaurant or a coffee shop, whatever you want to call it. That job taught me a great deal, the one thing it didn’t teach me was that I’m not cut out to be a waitress or food server. It took me years to learn that lesson.

The job in Oklahoma City taught me how to write a check for a customer. It taught me how to laugh at stupid jokes, which were not funny, and let the customer think the jokes were funny. It taught me how to drink my coffee without cream or sugar and like the coffee; for this I’m eternally grateful. It also taught me that I don’t like working for relatives.

Tuesday, July 17, 2012 ~ July 2012 Unofficial: FOLLOW ME BLOGGING CHALLENGE prompt is BIG BAD WOLF Happy July 4th! emergency prompt "July 16th Prompt" Talk about your favorite superhero.

My favorite super hero is someone who uses technology, is an alien (from another planet), or just has lousy luck. The super hero that uses technology is Batman (AKA Bruce Wayne), you have to admit that car was something else. I would have loved to drive that car down Main Street of any small town in Middle America at high noon, with the local law enforcement officers chasing you.

Superman (AKA Clark Kent) was the super hero who was an alien from another planet. As a child, it’s nice to think that aliens on other planet look just like humans on Earth, but have superpowers. However, as I grew older I realized that citizens of other planets probably wouldn’t look exactly like human because of different evolutionary environments, as well as realizing they would be more interesting if they didn’t look exactly like humans and didn’t have superpowers.

The superheroes with lousy luck were Spiderman (AKA Peter Parker and the mutated spider bite) and the Incredible Hulk (AKA Dr. Bruce Banner and the ill-fated gamma ray experiment). The nice thing about Spiderman is that he also used technology creatively. Despite the fact that I have arachnophobia, I always wanted the ability to climb walls and shoot webs. As for the Incredible Hulk, that probably explains my belief that no matter how good the science behind the experiment, something is eventually going to go wrong.

I think of all them my favorite superhero was the Incredible Hulk followed closely by Spiderman. I think I liked Spiderman and the Incredible Hulk because they seemed more human with both human failing and regrets (or guilt depending on your point of view).

Sunday, July 15, 2012 ~ July 2012 Unofficial: FOLLOW ME BLOGGING CHALLENGE prompt is What are the qualities you look for in the perfect relationship? by Emily

If I had composed this entry on Sunday instead of Monday, I would have said there was no such thing as a perfect relationship. However, my experience on Sunday has put an entirely new light on this subject. I was ill (all though I think that is an understatement) Sunday. I had the dry heaves, I wanted to sleep, I was in pain (unfortunately, I was too ill to eat so that I could take my pain medication), and I still had to take care of Mom all day. The only one who got anything to eat Sunday was Mom and she ate dry cereal all day because I could not fix anything else. The only writing I managed on Sunday was finishing the fantasy newsletter.

Cater to my needs
The perfect relationship
When I am in pain

I want someone to wait on me when I am sick and in pain. I want someone to take care of Mom when I am sick. I want someone to remind me what meds to give or take at what time when I am in pain. I want someone to tell me it is better to eat a little bit, even if I do throw it up, then to have the dry heaves. I want someone to fix Mom and me something to eat when I am in pain and sick.

Cater to my needs
When I am sick and in pain
I ask nothing else
The perfect relationship

Saturday, July 14, 2012 ~ July 2012 Unofficial: FOLLOW ME BLOGGING CHALLENGE initiating entry prompt for July 14, 2012 by Prosperous Snow celebrating

On Friday, July 13, I mixed a pitcher of milk using dry milk. I remember Grandma calling it powdered milk. Grandma mixed it and used it in cooking, but we only drank it in emergencies. Both Grandma and Mom preferred us to drink milk out of a bottle or jug. I don’t know why because I would think dry milk is just as nutritious as milk from a jug. On the front of the package, it says “Instant Nonfat Dry Milk fortified with Vitamins A & D”, but perhaps when I was a child the “powdered” milk wasn’t fortified with vitamins.

Anyway, as I was saying, yesterday I decided to mix up a pitcher of powdered milk. This time I decided to follow the directions on the package. Normally, I guestimate the amount of instant milk powder I put in the pitcher. According to the directions, I mix 1 1/3 cups of dry milk with 3 ¾ cups of water in a container. The directions don’t say how large a container, but they do say that this will make approximately one quart of fluid milk.

The container I used holds two quarts of liquid. Therefore, I figured I should double the amount of powdered milk and water. I measured 2 2/3 cups of the dry milk and put them in the container (yes, I know that the directions say put the water in first). I put in the milk powder and heard Mom crying, so I went to see about her. I didn’t get back to the milk until after Mom left for the daycare center.

I measured the water into the pitcher and stirred. I had a difficult (understatement) time mixing the milk properly with out tiny chunks of powdered milk balls floating on time. Next time I will put the water in first and then the milk powder. I also found out why the milk sours in the refrigerator. Right there on the package it says “Use within 3 to 5 days”, so 6 to 10 days is obviously too long to let it sit in the refrigerator before using it.

The problem is that in order for me to drink the milk I have to mix it with something else. I can use it on cereal if I put enough sugar in the cereal, but I prefer yogurt on cereal. If I put yogurt on cereal then I don’t have to put sugar on like I do with milk. However, I have solved the problem of drinking the milk; I bought a container of chocolate malt Ovaltine. Now all I have to do is figure out how much Ovaltine in a 12 or 16 oz. glass because the directions on the Ovaltine container calls for an 8 oz. glass and due to breakage I only have 6, 12, and 16 oz. glasses in the cupboard.

Friday, July 13, 2012 ~ July 2012 Unofficial: FOLLOW ME BLOGGING CHALLENGE prompt is "July 13, Friday by Wordsmitty ✍️

Friday the 13th
A Good Friday to stay home
Out of the garage

I do not want a rabbit’s foot today (unless the rabbit is still alive) because if the foot is off a dead rabbit then why should it be any luckier for me then it was for the rabbit. If you can prove to me that the rabbit is still alive and hopping on three legs or has an artificial leg then maybe the rabbit’s foot is still lucky.

Friday the 13th
July began on Sunday
Therefore,
It has to have a Friday the 13th
Any month that begins on Sunday
Will have a Friday the 13th.

I would accept a four-leaf clover, if I understood why a four-leaf clover is any luckier then a three-leaf clover or a five-leaf clover. Actually, since odd number are supposed to be luckier then even number it would seem to me that a three-leaf or a five-leaf clover would be luckier then a four-leaf cover. In addition, there is the concept of numeric roots. The number four is the numeric root of thirteen, therefore, if thirteen is unlucky then why is not four unlucky?

Friday the 13th
If a person is superstitious
Then bad luck is going to kick you in the mouth
No matter what day of the week,
The month,
Or the year.

I would like a box of Lucky Charms. Do they still make Lucky Charms? I am not going to the store for just Lucky Charms today. I am not going to the store for anything today because I went to the grocery store yesterday and bought everything I intended to buy this week. If I do get Lucky Charms then it will have to wait until Monday and by then I will have talked myself out of that cereal and convinced myself I need something with more chocolate in it.

Friday the 13th
A rainy Friday in Las Vegas
Where people forget how to drive on wet roads
And drive through puddles too deep
For anything smaller then
A semi-trailer truck.

As for the spiders, I would just as soon not think about or discuss the hairy eight-legged creatures. Since I have not seen any inside my house or my car recently I am willing to let them live or let whatever predators prey on them feast inside my garage or in my yard.

Thursday, July 12, 2012 ~ July 2012 Unofficial: FOLLOW ME BLOGGING CHALLENGE prompt is "7-12-2012 Theme Park by BIG BAD WOLF Happy July 4th!

I want to go to a theme park. It’s been so long since I visited a theme park that I think I’ve forgotten what it was like. All right, the last theme park I visited was in California and it was Disney Land, but I can’t remember the exact date.

Theme park vacation
Even by myself sounds good
Out of Las Vegas

Sometimes Las Vegas sounds like a theme park. Some of the hotel-casinos have rides, but I don’t count going to a theme park in a town you live in a vacation. It’s a staycation, but not a vacation. All right, I have to admit that in this case, the difference is subtle, but there is a difference. However, I think the only vacation I will get in the near or even far future is a staycation; so I’ll have to be satisfied with that.

The Las Vegas Zoo
Not a theme park but fun
Daytime attendance

I suppose I could go to the Las Vegas Zoo. It isn’t a theme park, they don’t have any rides; however, they do have lions, and tigers, and crocodiles. They have a petting zoo and a gift shop. I have a new digital camera. Still I would like to go somewhere there are rides. I’ll have to check the hotel-casino websites and see what they have.

Wednesday, July 11, 2012 ~ July 2012 Unofficial: FOLLOW ME BLOGGING CHALLENGE prompt is "7-11-2012 Siblings by BIG BAD WOLF Happy July 4th!

Siblings
are a blessing
and a curse,
sometimes they drive you crazy
or just the reverse.

I love my brothers and my sister. One brother I seldom hear from unless there is a family issue, I do not think he understands the concept of texting because he never sends or answers text. One brother sends me daily “be encouraged” religious messages, he understands the concept of texting and I suspect he is convinced the my mother, my sister, my other brother, and me are all going to hell; however, at this period in my life the last thing I am worried about is a family reunion in hell. I am sure my sister does not know how to text, but I am worried about her because she just lost her husband to a brain aneurism.

Siblings
make life interesting.

What is there to say about siblings? My mother was an only child and wished all her life that she had siblings. She had cousins, but they are not the same as brothers and sisters. I think the reason Mom had more then one child is that she did not want any of her offspring to be an only child. My father had several siblings and I never did get to ask him what he thought about the subject, but he probably thought a large family was all right.

I love my brothers and sister. I probably would love my half-sister if I ever met her. After all, she is one of my siblings and despite everything, family is family and you eventually to learn to love and forgive them or at least make them understand that you will not put up with their impolite behavior when they are in your house. You do not necessarily have to live in the same house or city with them, but you do eventually learn to forgive them and even laugh about some of the things they do to and for you.

My siblings and me
all have different religions
and different political affiliations,
but common genetic components,
we drive each other crazy
which is what siblings are supposed to do.

Tuesday, July 10, 2012 ~ July 2012 Unofficial: FOLLOW ME BLOGGING CHALLENGE prompt is With the new age of technology including computers, many writers no longer handwrite. Do you prefer to type or handwrite? Is one or the other more inspiring? Tell me why by Emily

To type or not to type
That is the question:
Do I type or do I write?

The answer to this question is not a straightforward yes or no, my answer to this question is it depends on the situation and the time constraints. Sometimes I sit down at the computer and start typing away. Sometimes I use a pen and paper journal to begin a story, write a poem and then finish, or rewrite when I sit down at the computer.

Yesterday, I began "The Carpet Layer and the Kitten in my pen and paper journal. This morning, I sit down at the computer and finished the story before posting it to "Snow Scribbles [18+]. The reason I began this story in my pen and paper journal was inspiration and time constrains. This story is the response to a prompt. I got the inspiration (idea) for the response while I was taking care of my mother yesterday morning. In addition, I had a meeting to go to yesterday and didn’t have time to sit down at the computer. I used the pen and paper journal to write most of the story yesterday between everything. This morning, I sit down at the computer and then finished the story, so that I could post it today.

Which method is more inspiring? The answer to this question depends on a number of things. Sometimes sitting down at the computer and looking out my living room window is more inspiring. I can watch the clouds move across the sky, watch the wind blow through the neighbors trees, or watch raindrops falling on my cement driveway without going outside and dealing with the elements. Sometimes I want to deal with the elements. At those times I can take a pen and a journal go to a park, a restaurant, or out onto my patio and write in long hand.

The method that is more inspiring depends on the weather. If there is an extreme heat warning in Las Vegas then I prefer my inspiration to remain indoors. If it is early spring, late fall, or winter then I go outdoors for my inspiration.

I watched the video, a pride of lions in pursuit of a herd of Cape buffalo. The lions attack a calf, took it down and then lions with their prey fell into the river. The lions attempted to pull the calf from the river, when a crocodile (an opportunistic predator) took one of the calf’s legs in his mouth. The tug of war began.

The lions (not wanting to give up their dinner) continue to pull the calf onto the riverbank while the crocodile pulled the opposite direction. Eventually, the crocodile gave up and the lions pulled the calf onto the bank. One would think this was the end of the story, the lions have their dinner and the Cape buffalo are missing one calf.

The herd of buffalo return and the lead bull attacks the lions. He carries one lion away from the calf and then returns to attack the other lions. The lions out numbered and endanger of losing their lives to the horns of an extremely angry Cape buffalo give up the calf. The calf got up and rejoined the herd.

Did the calf eventually died because of its encounter with hungry lions and an opportunistic crocodile? The calf appeared to be unharmed when it rejoined the herd. I like to think the calf is still alive as determined to survive as the Cape buffalo bull was determined to save it.

I’m coming undone,
brain cell by brain cell
I’m losing touch with reality.

Someone, I think Dr. Phil, once said “There is no reality only perception,” if that is true, then I’m probably losing touch with perception rather then reality. Either way, it’s been a weird two day. First, let me explain why I’m responding to the “Follow Me” prompt for Saturday, July 7, on Sunday, July 8.

Saturday, was almost a lost writing day. I say almost lost because I accomplished only one piece of writing on that day. On Saturday, I made an entry in "Snow Scribbles called "How do I judge thee, let me count the ways. The only reason I made that entry was because Saturday was the last day of the week and I have to make at least three entries a week in that blog.

By the time I completed and posted that entry, it was about 8:43 PM Pacific Time, which is 11:43 PM Eastern Time. I then added a couple of things to the introduction to that blog; anyway, by the time I finished it was close to 9:00 PM or 12:00 AM (depending on which side of the country you are living on). At this point, I realized while my mind was willing to go on my body was weak and wanted to go to sleep.

I spent all day Saturday changing, feeding, and talking to my mother. As I went to bed, I realized that there was a good possibility I was losing touch with reality and I needed to take to a adult; yes, my mother is 91 years old, but talking to Mom is like talking to a two or three year old.

I think I’m coming undone,
so tomorrow
I’m getting out in the sun.

Decisions, decisions, decisions
Why is it there are always decisions?

I can think of a great many people I would like to invite to dinner. Since I can only choose four I suppose I need to choose the ones I would like to have an intelligent conversation with, rather then those I would like to ask “What were you thinking when you made [that] decision?

I would invite, Baha’u’llah the founder of the Baha’i Faith, who said “...The earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens.” (Tablets of Baha'u'llah, p. 167)

I would invite, Scottish physicist Peter Higgs who proposed the existence of the Higgs boson (the God particle), which is important in understanding why matter has mass.

I would invite, the Babi poet, Tahirih, who removed her veil in Iran sometime in the 1700s and died in 1752. Strangled her and body dumped in a dry well.

I would invite, Isaac Asimov because he is one of my favorite science fiction writers.

I think that is a good mix. It is educational the conversation would be stimulating.

Wednesday, July 4, 2012 ~ Month 2012 Unofficial: FOLLOW ME BLOGGING CHALLENGE prompt is Initiating Blog entry by Prosperous Snow celebrating

The 4th of July is dangerous! My memories of celebrating Independence Day contain event that could have cost someone’s life or endangered their sight. For three consecutive years, my Grandparents and the extended family went to Lake Carl Blackwell to set off fireworks. The events I am listing in the next paragraph are in the order of severity and not necessarily the order in which they occurred.

1. One of my cousins (I forget which one) pulled a pan of grease off the camping stove onto her.
2. Another cousin set off a cherry bomb and rocks or small stones hit him in the eyes.
3. My youngest brother nearly drowned when the life jacket he wore did not work properly and soaked up water. Fortunately, my Grandfather never let him or any of us into the water without him watching us.

When we began celebrating the 4th of July at the Lake, Lake Blackwell, or whatever the recreational area close to Blackwell, Oklahoma is called the following occurred. These are list in the order that I remember them.

1. My Grandfather was sitting on the hood of his car holding Roman candles in his hand while they went off. (All right, adults are supposed to know better, but let us not discuss that particular issue.) Anyway, the Roman candle backfire and sparks got on his cotton shirt. He jumped off the hood and brushed the sparks off his shirt.
2. My brothers set firecrackers off in the hills of fire ants. (At least, they did until they someone rated them out.) If you have never felt an angry fire ant sting you, you have never experienced pain. Peeing on the sting does not help. Peeing yourself is a reaction to the fire ant’s sting.

The 4th of July is dangerous! That is the reason fire works whether or not they are “safe and sane” (I doubt this description) are not allowed in National Forest. This is the reason the citizens of North Las Vegas worry about the short staffing in fire stations in that cash strapped city. This and the fact that some of my neighbors set off illegal (unsafe and insane) fireworks on Independence Day are the main reasons I remain home and watch the festivities on television. The other reason (this year) is that I have no intention of taking my mother out in 80, 90 or 100 degree temperatures with monsoonal moister (which a blog entry in itself).

EMERGENCY PROMPT: There is nothing like the scent of ... in the morning.

Tuesday, July 3, 2012 ~ Month 2012 Unofficial: FOLLOW ME BLOGGING CHALLENGE prompt is "Patriotism by Wordsmitty ✍️

Humanity is in the process of social and cultural change. The planet is moving from a culture of nation-states to a world culture. Everything about our society and culture is evolving including the concept of patriotism. The concept of patriotism is evolving to embrace love of humanity and love of the planet.

The nations of earth are as interconnected as the trees of a red wood forest. Each tree sends it roots down and out. The roots embrace each other and nurture each other. This is what the nations of Earth will eventually do, but first humanity will have to go through a period of stress and change. Today, we live in that stage of stress, change, and cultural evolution.

At the grass roots level, new concepts of planetary unity and patriotism are replacing the old concepts of national unity and patriotism. Earth is becoming one country and humanity one race. The problem is that this process of change scares the shit out of many people because it requires the individual to put aside or overcome prejudices of race, religion, nation, gender, etc. It does not require that the individual give up love of country, it just requires the individual to widen the concept patriotism to include the entire planet and the human race.

I couldn’t resist putting Snow in front of the title Follow Me. At this time of day there isn’t much I can resist. Fortunately, the only temptation I have in the house is a package of beef hotdogs, all though some people like to call them frankfurters. Personally, I prefer the name hotdogs just as I prefer them to be all beef.

I usually don’t keep hotdogs in the house because I have difficulty resisting the temptation. However, Wednesday is Independence Day in the U.S.A. (oh, that rhymes) and I always eat hotdogs on the 4th of July. I grew up eating all beef hotdogs on Independence Day, therefore, when I plan the menu I make sure I have hotdogs. I also have potato salad, Cole slaw (or as one of my siblings used to call it “Cold Slaw”), two individual watermelons, two individual cherry-berry froze pies, potato chips, wild cherry Pepsi, and hotdog buns.

I’m almost ready for the 4th, I have to go back to the store tomorrow to get ice cream to go on the pies. I forgot to put ice cream on my shopping list, so now I have to go back to the store. In addition, I have to get a loaf of bread, which I didn’t put on my shopping list either. I did put mustard and sweet relish on my shopping list and bought those. Oh well, I have to get some cash for gas anyway.

Sunday, July 1, 2012 ~ July 2012 Unofficial: FOLLOW ME BLOGGING CHALLENGE prompt is "Change. Tell us a good change that has happened in your life. And a bad change that has happened in your life."

It was a good change
When I moved to Las Vegas
And writing.com

The reason I combine the move to Las Vegas and writing.com, I don’t think I would have discovered writing.com if I hadn’t moved to Las Vegas. I discovered writing.com by accident. At the time, it was story.com. I worked at the computer lab in Henderson (about five miles from Las Vegas) and it was a slow day. Therefore, I was working online or rather surfing because there was nothing else to do. I joined on a whim and have been a member ever since.

Many good things that happened to me because I moved to Las Vegas, another good thing was the Baha’i Faith. I didn’t hear about Baha’u’llah and the Baha’i Faith until after I moved to Las Vegas. The best thing that could have happened to me was knowledge of Baha’u’llah and the Baha’i Faith, which means that moving to Las Vegas was one of the best decisions I could have made.

It was a bad change
My Mother diagnosed with
Alzheimer’s disease

Thinking back about Mom’s actions in the years before the diagnoses, I realize that the symptoms were there; I just didn’t recognize them as an indication of Alzheimer’s disease. If, knowing what I know today, I had a chance to relive that part of my life I would have talked to the doctor about the symptoms at the time. However, since hindsight is 100% and changing the past isn’t a good idea even if it were possible my life today is caring for an Alzheimer’s patient.

Day, Month #, 2012 ~ 30-Day Blogging Challenge prompt is blog about ANY experience of your life in two parts (it must be 1 experience, 2 parts)

Venous problems
I have to wear compression stockings
or my legs swell

The problem with my left leg had to do with my veins. I had two out patient procedures at a vein clinic and outpatient surgical center to take care of part of the problem. The procedure entailed kill nonworking veins in my right and left legs. I had the procedures done in March and April.

On Friday, June 29, I went in for an ultra sound of my legs. The good news is that both of the nonworking veins are dead and there no blood flowing through them. The good news is that I do not have any blood clots. I have to go in to the clinic in September or another ultrasound.

Compression stocking
Not the prettiest there are
Sometimes feel good

I no longer have a bandage on my left leg, but my leg is still red. The red seems to be going away or perhaps I just hope its going away. This whole experience still seems surreal, as if I’m in a dream and I will wake up without is problems with my legs.

I have an appointment on July 5 at the wound hospital for a follow-up so that the doctor can see how my leg is doing. The leg seems to be fine with the exception of the redness and periodic swelling.

I like the surreal experience idea because that is how having a knee-high bandage on my left leg for the past five months has felt. The problem with my legs concerns the veins, which the doctors and nurses call venous problems and I call venous.

My left leg weeping
There were sores and the skin red
And the leg swollen

This issue began in late 2011 before my Medicare kicked in. I didn’t have any medical insurance, so I had to go to a sliding fee clinic. Anyway, the doctor and I presumed the issue was something else. To make a long story short or a short story long (depending on your point of view), I didn’t have a much money to spend on doctors and the more questions I ask the more specialist I had to see and the more it cost.

My left leg swelling
I hid it beneath long skirts
Topical medication did not work

When my Medicare kicked in, in January, I went to a different doctor. She sent me to the wound hospital and a vein specialist. At the wound hospital, a doctor put a knee-high bandage on my left leg and told me to have it changed in one week. The RN who put the bandage on, explained that the bandage they used would stink if it got wet. I never want to take a sponge bath again as long as I live.

In January,
February, March, April, and
May I took sponge baths.

This is surreal experience part 1 and tomorrow will be surreal experience part 2.
