In my view, the primary focus should be on encouraging the writers to write. I do not review items I don't enjoy anymore because I see it as a waste of my time. So, if you get a review from me, I enjoyed reading your work. The amazing thing about this whole process is that reading an inspiring review usually leads to me reading more of a reviewer's work also. So, it's a win-win.

I will not review...
something I do not like. I do not enjoy writing hyper-critical reviews. I do NOT believe that "honesty" is a synonym for "mean." If I see someone being "mean" here on the public reviewing page, in group behaviors, or just acting as a bully I will not send them my reviews. The only exception to that would be judging a site contest - there all items get honest (and hopefully diplomatic) reviews of the work from me with no exceptions.

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* This gives me shivers just thinking about it. You never know when those who have gone before will choose to communicate, but when they do it there is usually a very good reason. I totally believe in that.

It was probably something like Sam's way of letting her know that he was okay.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

"Unknown to me the true message you sent,
but they knew exactly what you meant.
Assurance of your return from beyond.
What a way to reunite that bond."

That is a bond that can never be broken. Death cannot touch it, I believe that. This was very moving for me as it is something I fear, but we all move along to the next phase sooner or later.

Very comforting and inspirational poem to anyone who has lost a pet or anyone else who has suffered a loss.

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* This is a poem that sets out boundaries that one must have to protect oneself from a whole array of intruders who would push in. The title, to me, refers to the fact that human contact is not necessarily wanted or needed here. So, it is okay to write the message and leave it for later or leave it on a voicemail. The whole togetherness idea seems to be rejected out of hand. Frankly, sometimes those that would push in the hardest are the ones we would rather push away, at least for a time. They know not what they do, I reckon.

There is the desire, though, to know that someone does care, but the inclination to be particular about how that caring is communicated or conveyed.

Too much contact with humanity can lead to the desire to be alone. That is a smart way to go sometimes. The poem flowed very well and was entertaining. I could identify with a lot of the sentiment expressed and saw nothing to nitpick about.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

"If the door isn't answered,
It could be I'm sleeping,
I'm outdoors, with Mom,
Or privately weeping."

These choices make me feel sad, but they seemed familiar all the while. I get that right now the alternatives are not particularly cheery. I think it is natural and even okay for it to be that way sometimes.

The melancholy theme was effectively laced throughout the poem.

I enjoyed reading it and could relate to a lot of what you express here. I hope, wherever in Texas you may be, you are safe and dry! Well done!

*Dog1* I gave the prompt for this in "The Writer's Cramp"  last week. I was not the judge, but am interested to read what you writers do with my prompts. Things have been hectic, so it took me a while to get my act together.

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

You did a fine job of using all the prompt things I threw into the mix. Basset hounds are stubborn, so you captured that aspect of the personality well. I was curious to know the basset's name. The other human was Jake. Jake is a good name for a dog, also. Bassets typically have huge paws, although they are short.

There was a lot of anxiety and preparation leading up to last week's eclipse. I believe there was way too much hype and that it overshadowed that coming storm in Texas. The weather prognosticators were too frenzied to properly pay attention and warn us in their hysterical fashion. The whole thing lasted about a minute or so.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

The thing that cracked me up most was the ungrateful, uncaring squirrel. You really nailed their personality quirks there. *Laugh*

I enjoyed reading this. All that worrying I did for the eclipse came to naught. We had a thunderstorm that made it just cloudy and my basset slept through the whole thing. She was smarter than me. I watched it on TV. Here, it was just cloudy rainy and dark. Like any other day when it rains in summer, I reckon.

You did a nice job with your story. It was very entertaining and engaging!

*Hand2* I gave the prompt that this was written for in "The Writer's Cramp" . Even though I wasn't the judge, I like to read the items written to my prompts when I have a chance. August was a busy month, but here I am in September, reading and reviewing!

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

This is the story of one individual's writing journey. I think all successful writers have this sort of rejection and, really, they get the originality hammered out of them if they are not stubborn about holding on to it. I read that about 27 editors said no toe J.K. Rowling. Really, what geniuses! I don't think editors necessarily know more than writers. They know what sells using a formula of sorts, but many times they lack the imagination to recognize things that are new and different.

Then, once published how many books are on the discount table at Barnes and Noble? Most are. Even bestsellers and Pulitzer Prize winners end up in the discounted pile.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

I think the key is being able to recognize that you, the first person narrator here, have the power to start over fresh with the original humor and personality that was evident in the work at first glance. This is a good story about trying and not giving up and being able to pivot, identify one's own strengths and carry on. Without that ability, I don't think anyone would make it as a writer.

Fine story - I enjoyed reading it!

*Hand2* I saw that you had added some here and came to read.

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* I think that we all go through times like this. It seems to come in waves sometimes, just like a flood.

My niece, who lives in Houston, has made it through and they never lost power. They had some flooding in their house and had to dig a trench around it and put up mud in garbage bags like sandbags, but so far so good. She said even the stores are starting to open, although they don't have a lot of things. The media is fibbing about the gas not being up and running. I don't know why - maybe to raise our prices. I think they will go back down in a big way in a couple of weeks.

She is looking at the positive that they all survived and made it out in one piece. The stuff they lost is just stuff. I think it is so far getting a little better there every day. I hope they do not have any more storms for a long time.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

Well, sometimes things just seem overwhelming. I have been having that here and then I think of what my niece has gone through and what you have gone through and we all have these times, you are right. We just have to cry when we need to in order to let it out and carry on I think.

But it does seem like one thing after another can go wrong or turn out in a way that was unintended. It makes me want to live in the past somewhat, but I am sure those past times had their problems that I was unaware of at the time.

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* This is a powerful short story about a couple who has fallen into a pattern of abuse. One night in Vegas it all goes too far.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

*Thumbsup* I liked how she took charge and found a way out, even if it was through the violence. Sometimes, it takes something shattering (literally) to make one's way to a new life. It is all too easy to get hooked on a bad cycle of abuse, whether it be verbal or physical or a combination of both.

It sounded like, here, Shay did what needed to be done and the emotional break was total as she did not get sucked back into a sympathy thing for his injuries.

You did a wonderful job with your story! Fine work!

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

Society and the powers that be do rely on group think to stay in power. It is those who constantly learn who find a way to replenish their minds and maybe buck the system a little bit. I don't think that is an easy thing to undertake and in the end is it any more rewarding than conforming?

Well, who knows really. When I think against the machine and against what I am told to think I usually end up being right, but do I act upon that?

That is the question of having the courage to take the action needed to turn things on their head. Well, people have that at times, but they are rarely listened to because of things like media pressure and the like.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

*Thumbsup* This was the part that stays with me:

"But before his dreams mature with age;
the city sees a threat to its ways.
"Teach him to be gay in a cage."
dreams are crushed, potential--slayed."

I think it applies to being gay or going against anything that is popular and accepted groupthink. Cults can form around anything if we follow blindly, I reckon.

This was a very thought provoking poem. Well done, as always.

*Cow**Right**Hand1* You sent me some very nice reviews recently, so here I am reading and reviewing in your portfolio as I transition into an autumn tHiNG! Sophie is one of my favorite names of all time!

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

I thought about how cats are very stealthy and they try to be helpful to their humans and guide them in the right direction. I have a Basset Hound and she is not usually stealthy like this. She loves cats but they are wary of her.

She likes to scold the ones she sees in the street, by howling at the window. The cats ignore her and do what they want to do, usually. They are the most independent creatures I've ever known (cats, not dogs).

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

I loved it all, especially this part and the instructions on feeding.


"And finally, dear friend,
If you have to misbehave, as we all must do.
do not do it in front anybody."

I think this method of teaching, when it comes to what to feed them, would be quite effective in most humans. The Vet finally had to tell us and spell it out for us and that was the day we went to green beans, apple slices and carrot slices as snacks. It made a huge difference in a dog, so I can only imagine what doing the right thing might mean to a finicky kitty.

Loved it!

On the judge thing, I don't know. Sometimes I see things and I am like "what"? Now, I try not to take it personally, but it can be a disheartening thing at times. I agree with that sentiment.

Well done with the writing of the poem and the commentary!

*Cool**Idea* It is the true poet, who feels called and summoned to write. It is a very insistent urge once it has begun.

This was my particular favorite portion:

"Immortal spirit
consumed in the blaze of matter,
the bird of poetry rises
reborn out of the flames of ego."

It is the ego that wills us to carry on and survive and learn from those experiences that we turn to poetic communication.

I thought this was succinct and brilliant. Bravo!

*Cow* You sent me some very nice reviews recently. I would like to wish you a Happy Birthday today with another review. I was drawn to this title as I admire Poe's work very much.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* In Baltimore they pay tribute to Poe, but it was not this way when he was alive. He was scorned and shunned by jealous colleagues I am afraid. Still, now the Baltimore Ravens are named for him. Time changes attitudes and vision, doesn't it?

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part in this foreboding poem:


"What it was like before the witch cast her spell only
now her vindictive pumpkin returns each year.
Making sure that ghosts do her evil bidding and
confidant the scared raven will not interfere."

Was he under a spell that night? There are many stories and legends, but the fact remains that he was only fully appreciated after his demise.

Fine poem about a writing legend. Well done!

*Cool**Idea* I think that this poem conveys the constancy of friendship as compared with temporary things and the problems of life. We hopefully find those we can count on and who can count on us in our journeys through.

This was my favorite part:

"Unspeakable bonds,
forged through time.
The troubles have come
and gone.
Now we see
how we've grown together."

There is nothing that binds people like facing obstacles together and overcoming them. This is how you learn who your friends are as you grow up.

I think that the world can look much different after a storm. Maybe we learn from things and maybe not. With humans, it is doubtful.

This was my favorite part:

It is time to light the ceremonial fires.
To call upon the eagle and the hawk
To take the prayer requests for healing of the land and nature back to the
Spirits that reside in the Universe.

We have to appreciate all that we have in order to pray for it. That is part of the key I think. This is a wonderful poem about honoring and respecting all that is powerful and part of nature in our world. Those who feel the pull toward earth all know that it is a relationship that requires a lot of mutual love and respect.

I think that faith in God is a good guiding point to have. Well, we never know what life will throw at us, so it is good to have something to hold on to in rocky times.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* I was wondering what the prompt was that led to this fine story. It is creative and engaging and I want to see what happens next to Lisa.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

Dustin's mother is a horror, isn't she? I think that more people would hesitate to marry if they realize that they are marrying not just the beloved one, but their family also. She really seems to love Dustin. He and his mother share that history that she knows nothing about, though.

I am not sure what a gorger really is, but it doesn't sound flattering coming from Mama here.

You did a fine job - I enjoyed reading this very much! I am rooting for Lisa to prevail and make the right decision, even if that might be dumping Dustin!

*Cool**Idea* He is a great actor of his generation I think. Johnny Depp has a lot of personality. I caught the end of him on a talk show recently. I think he was promoting a new pirate movie.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I think it is cool that your son met him and he was a nice person in addition to being a big star. That is so cool. He has done a lot of good movies over the years. I hope that his personal life is under control now and things are good for him.

He has a lot of talent and does a good job in selecting memorable roles in movies. Good entry, Megan! *Heart*

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

The thing that you convey to me is that we are owned by our pets, particularly with cats. They pick us, not the other way around. I think there is a lot of truth to this and with respect to dogs, also. Although I do believe cats may come from a wiser place than humans or dogs.

I still believe my basset hound pup chose us all those years ago.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I was interested in the various relationships that developed over the years. Jay seemed like a particularly wise soul. You never know who will relate to who in the animal world. Resting in the hen house sounds like like he could get along with anyone, dog or poultry types.

Crossing the rainbow bridge is a nice way to think of the end of things here. But, sooner or later, we all end up moving on over that bridge, don't we?

I enjoyed reading this and was glad that it wasn't political. That is always a good thing these days - to not get into politics.

*Cow* You visited me recently, so here I am to visit and review your article about the murders of the Jewish population of Jedwabne, Poland. The title engaged my attention as I am very interested in all that went on during the 1930's and 40's in the world.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I think the horror of what happened is something that most people try and avoid. We should all learn from it, as we do with history. But people want to push all of history aside because it is awful to think of human beings in the 20th century doing such a thing.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I think it is easy to blame one segment of the population when there is a downturn or economic hardships. If only "x" group wasn't doing "x" everything would be right with the world. The German government made a foolish deal to end WWI and then they wanted to find a way to go back on everything. So, everything was the Jewish population's fault until they didn't exist anymore. Then, it was time to look at the Hitler and the gang of thugs.

It is to their eternal shame that a whole population (or enough to make it happen anyway) in Germany and in Poland went along with all this.

My family is partly Jewish now through marriage so I feel a connection with my grandsons being Jewish, and I feel horror whenever I hear about antisemitism in the world. But, when a big group of bullies picks on a little segment of the population it is always very bad news.

This was a thought provoking article. I think a lot of people went along to avoid problems for themselves. That is sort of human nature, but it is sort of sickening, too. History is the final word and they are a horror onto themselves in those two countries. There is a reason behind the holocaust museum for anyone astute enough to want to learn about history and crimes of the past.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

You had me getting more and more nervous and for good reason. I will not reveal the ending in the remoo. I was thinking to myself, well that is what spiders do. It's the way of the world and then I'm like whoa. What's next on the menu? Beef? *Cow**Balloons*

*Thumbsup* I like how you slowly build to the horrible surprise at the end. When you think about it, this sort of thing isn't ever fun for the prey. I like the way you could use the spider as a metaphor for politicians these days, too. I'm not sure that was intended, but I sort of read it into the mix.

We bring our own thoughts and experiences to the reading of the writing. This gave me the shivers in the barn on an August morning! Well done!

You have written a wonderful poem about life and how the journey is all the more vivid and sweet when in the company of a beloved soul-mate or friend.

This was my favorite part:

"Cause it's been too long
since I've seen you
and I 'm amazed I made it this far.

through this journey called life."

This reminded me of how blessed and lucky I am to have found that person so many years ago. He's still here, thank God!

Lovely poem about a wonderful and inspiring relationship! I'm not sure what the prompt was, but I don't really think that matters a whole lot. It's wonderful on its own!

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

The dialogue back and forth seems very natural and it fits the actors and the characters, as far as I know them, which is halfway through Season 6.

I am not familiar with who Bronn is, but I don't think that matters. I could picture all the others on the set, saying these things to each other and trying to get the action to move forward.

You do a great job with Emilia Clarke as I know her and the others, also. I can picture her fussing about what Daernys might and might not say. She has played her for a good long while now. The easy banter among the actors, as opposed to the heavy drama they act in, is a contrast that you make brilliantly.

Loved the banter and how the candy bars saved the day!

I enjoyed reading your story very much! Well done! I look forward to catching up when the new DVD is released as I do not have cable Tv!

*Cow* You sent me some nice reviews this month, so here I am to visit you and read in your Game of Thrones Writings! Sorry I am so slow in doing this, but I was thrilled with all the nice reviews I received! I am a bit overwhelmed in the heat, I guess.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

You did a fine job with the basic prompts. You explore the relationship between two people who choose to be together normally, but are suddenly, by circumstances, forced into a togetherness they had not anticipated.

Being stranded on a deserted island is about as close quarters as you can get, as the characters struggle to survive and cope with their changed situation.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I like how you reveal the thoughts of Shelle through what she says at the end. We know how the narrator feels and the things that irritate her, but the annoyance that Shelle feels comes through in that final comment, which is quite illuminating. Her positive, upbeat demeanor takes a beating, to be sure.

The way you reveal the characters through their words and thoughts is particularly astute and entertaining.

I enjoyed reading this response to one of the game's prompts very much!

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* I think that this event did bring people together. In my own area, there was a gathering at a big park and people were sharing the glasses because there weren't enough to go around.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part of your poem:

"Why?
Why does something so simple have such an affect?
Something so grand, something so magnificent,
allows people to come out of their shells and just be."

For a lot of people, this was a stretch of time (albeit short) when they did not have their noses in their cell phones as all the action was in the sky. It was over before it began really, the actual event lasting only a couple of minutes. It was a community happening that transcended all the normal whining of the day.

That made it a nice break and I think you have captured some of that in your fine poem. It brought forth the humanity that has been sorely missing for quite a long while.

*Cool**Idea* Helpful cutlery turns on Mickey in the morning. Well, Mickey seems like he is just the guy to handle a knife and other sharp objects.

What Does hooves think about while perusing your item?

That is a lot of interesting stuff you have learned. That poker playing guy sounds like Maverick. It is cool to find out you're related to the Bush family. I wonder how they all spread out like they did.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I learned about some of mine long after my Dad died. I learned that his great grandfather was from Scotland and fought in the Civil War on the Union side and he lost a leg. He as in all the parades that they had in subsequent years and lived to be very old - in his 90's I think. My Dad actually knew this guy because he died in the 1930's when my Dad was a little guy. I never knew about him except from my Uncle, who is now 90. Well, four of my dad's nine siblings have made it to 90 so far. My Dad wasn't as lucky there.

My mother's family is supposedly related to Herbert Hoover and Benjamin Harrison and William Henry Harrison. A family member believes we are cousins to that Pawn Stars guy, Rick Harrison, but I've never seen proof of it. I think that part might be wishful thinking. My family had a lot of land in Iowa from my grandparents and from my great aunt who had no children. She played the stockmarket and did well with Kodak stock and with buying a lot of land and houses in Iowa. Smart woman, smarter than most of the men.
