In my view, the primary focus should be on encouraging the writers to write. I do not review items I don't enjoy anymore because I see it as a waste of my time. So, if you get a review from me, I enjoyed reading your work. The amazing thing about this whole process is that reading an inspiring review usually leads to me reading more of a reviewer's work also. So, it's a win-win.
I'm good at...
encouraging others to write because I love to read.
I will not review...
something I do not like. I do not enjoy writing hyper-critical reviews. I do NOT believe that "honesty" is a synonym for "mean." If I see someone being "mean" here on the public reviewing page, in group behaviors, or just acting as a bully I will not send them my reviews. The only exception to that would be judging a site contest - there all items get honest (and hopefully diplomatic) reviews of the work from me with no exceptions.

What brought tHiNg to glide in a space time continuum over to your port?

*Cow* I saw that you had added and came to read and send a review.

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* The idea of going back in time and meeting with Jane Austen's beloved characters is brilliant.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

I would always go back there and remember if that happened to me. It is like you get the inspiration here from actually talking to the people who inspired Jane Austen. What if they really did look like the actors who portrayed them. Plus, they are in a setting you know personally and their house has been moved there.

That is wonderful and imaginative to think of that. Very fine work with the prompt for your Blog, Megan! *Heart*

What brought tHiNg to glide in a space time continuum over to your port?

*Cow* I gave the prompt for this earlier in the week in The Writer's Cramp. I was not the judge, but I wanted to see what you writers would do with my prompt. So, here I am to read and send a review.

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

This wonderful poem is about something that is meant to be. The title is very engaging, as are all the words. We are all part and substance of the universe. Referring to Carl Sagan, it is written in the stars.

*Cool**Idea*

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

"So this
calls to us, in a way, this lure of heavens
so vast, this invitation to come back
to our Cosmic home."

There is something very comforting about thinking about life and its inevitable conclusion this way. It is accepting what cannot be changed and even welcoming what the future holds in store.

Very moving free verse style poem!

What brought tHiNg to glide in a space time continuum over to your port?

*Cow* I gave the prompt last week for this in The Writer's Cramp. I was not the judge, but was interested to see what you writers would do with my prompt.

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* The poem flows very well and tells the tale of the confusion we all felt all those years ago.

On this site, Bandit's Mama was killed in one of the Twin Towers. She wrote a lot about love and understanding, along with a premonition of what was to come. I think she would (if she could speak to us now) agree with trying to find our way back to the love and kindness that make some kind of sense.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

This stuck with me:

"Yet for the most part we both vowed to fight the cause for love,
to advocate reality and curb faith’s feeble shove.
With minds so lost there is the stench of bigotry and hate,
as seen by such religious fervor on that fateful date."

When we look to trying to find love and common ground with others, we honor the memories of those who died that day and since.

Profoundly moving poetry. Well done!

*Cow* I saw that you had added here, so here I am to read and send a review.

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* I do not enjoy flying either.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

I have not found a way to enjoy flying. I hope I never have to do it again. Well, if I want to go to Ireland I would have to fly. We have had some of the roughest flights going there. But it was worth it to see the beautiful green country. I think about cows in a meadow and watch the travel video that they show toward the end of the flight. It takes about 6 hours going and a little longer coming back.

I will never like flying. I took a flying lesson once in Maine and my instructor said I turned green. I thought if I did it, it might take the fear away as I used to travel a lot with my job. Nothing ever helped me not to be afraid. My mother would picture the clouds and look at them, but I am always scared to death. Mr. HOOves falls asleep before takeoff and is so relaxed. Totally different approach to the whole thing. He's never one to admit to being fearful in any situation.

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* I like how your poem invites me, as a reader, along for the ride. It is a unique car that is a joy to just ride in and not be worrying about what you are trying to get to. I guess in that way, it is a joyous reminder of all that life can be.

Your couplets are engaging and the rhyme flows well.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite section:

Oh, Hyundai Pie, I am auto-delighted,
I am very excited, to have you here with me.
Oh, Hyundai Pie, your black body does glisten,
and I give you a listen, when we zoom down the road.

It all reminded me of a car I loved and that was very reliable for me for a lot of years of long distance commuting through the mountains of Virginia. I felt like I was cruising along with you and Hyundai Pie.

Very nicely done!

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* I think that Dad had a lot of respect for mom running it by her and she was very sensible in her response. She didn't say, what are you nuts or anything like that. She just pointed out an example where naming it The Bathtub might cause difficulties. I wonder if he was serious with that or just testing to see what her reaction might be. It was a very gentle push away from the idea of the first name. Very diplomatic also.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

*Thumbsup* I am glad Dad had a lovely name for you. It made me wonder, though, what did he end up naming that car? Did he win? I know that it's not the important point, but I was curious about it.

What brought tHiNg to glide in a space time continuum over to your port?

*Cow*I am the judge for today in "The Writer's Cramp. Thanks for entering!

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* I thought about how sometimes we get caught up in something that is bigger than oneself. It is even bigger than a romance or a pairing of two like-minded souls. In the end of your fine poem, they are both lost, as the title indicates.

I thought this was very powerful and the rhyme just at the end of both stanza's is very effective and moving to me. It all was, really.

At the end of something there can be the choice or the inevitability of not seeing someone again. Either way, that is a profound challenge to live with such an outcome.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

It was all wonderful, but this was the part that moved me most:

"She would hum him tunes
of her childhood.
He would sing back the tales of youth.
And despite the destruction they lived through
they knew what they longed for was truth."

Oh that truth, eh? Maybe they long for that which will hurt the most when it is seen, realized or recognized.

Brilliant poetry, start to finish. It could apply to most any doomed relationship in a number of instances.

Wonderful!

*Cow*I am the judge for today in "The Writer's Cramp. Thanks for entering!

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* I thought about how Sally could choose a couple of paths here. She could choose to be irritated or to put it aside and be friendly and treat it as an amusing anecdote for future reflection.

She chooses the latter, only to have things take a turn for the serious.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

One never knows when someone being difficult conceals a much more serious problem than just cantankerousness.

This was my favorite part:

“Oh it’s fine, It Be Okay, that’s one way
to allay any tongue slips made today.”
Just then, It Be Okay began to sway,
asked for a chair and Sally said, “Okay.”

She chose kindness over disdain and was the better for it. She never saw him again, as the prompt indicates, but she was kind. That counts for something, I think, the effort to be kind when there is an easier and simpler choice.

Well done!

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* I like how the names of your characters are never revealed. It makes his gesture of sacrificing himself for her safety all the more noble. It goes without taking credit for things - he does it for her sake not for his.

The man, in this piece, gives up everything for the woman he loves, but yet feels as if he failed her. He could only do what he could do, after all and sacrificing one's life is a big thing to do for someone.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

I like that the future unfolds for her in the sense that this person did all this for her, expecting nothing in return. Indeed he even apologizes for not doing more. She has her whole life in front of her to do something in his memory.

Very moving and poignant story. Well told!

*Cow*You sent me a nice review recently and also some very nice anniversary wishes when I turned 16. Thank you so much again for that! Look out world, now I can drive! Hooves can too!

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* I think that those sugary cereals we ate as kids are yummy. I saw a Jerry Seinfeld standup thing (it's brand new) on Netflix and he was talking about all the great cereal he used to eat as a kid and how no one worried about the stuff they do today. He talked about being driven around without seatbelts and having people let their kids roam the neighborhood day and night without a care in the world.

Oh, Angus about halfway through that first paragraph, you call Rory, Adam, instead of Rory. I figure you must have changed the name at some point. That's just a tiny thing that is easily fixed.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

Well, it is Mr. Ed's voice. I love Mr. Ed, although, I would say he was more 60's into 70's. Wilbur and Mr. Ed. That voice gives me chills.

I hope the pink unicorn grants wishes. Eat more sugary cereal and your dreams will come true is the motto. Pass the Captain Crunch!

What brought tHiNg to glide in a space time continuum over to your port?

*Cow* I saw you had added here, so here I am to read and send a review.

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* We go to a lot of the same stores. I live in a place where there aren't many exciting places to go. That is why I go to Barnes and Noble every week, at least once a week. Everything I go to is close by because I live right in the city, which isn't much of a city really. I suppose you know there is a customer appreciation thing at B&N this weekend (through tomorrow) where they give an extra 10% off to members who pay that 25$ a year fee. It really isn't much, but it's something if you have anything you want to buy there this weekend.

I went and found three already discounted books that were marked down to $6.98. It wasn't much, but it was something with that extra 10% off.

Earlier in the week, I got the new Ken Follett book and the new Philippa Gregory book for my friends' birthdays from Amazon so I didn't need any of the newer books.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

I know you indicated Kohl's. I have noticed that the selection isn't as good this year and they aren't honoring the coupons as much. I tried to buy a toy for a great-nephew with the 30% off and they wouldn't give it to me on the toy. That was a first for Kohls.

They have a lot of nice things, though and I don't really need much in the way of clothes. What I did need I got from Lands End.

Well, when you get those checks started you will be officially retired then, right? It won't be long until they start coming in then. Right about Christmas time I guess. Then you can feel good about things.

Great entry. I like Bath and Bodyworks when they have their sales. Otherwise, the markup is something there.

*Cool**Idea* I think you are right. People should reach out and communicate how they feel, otherwise how will they get help. Maybe in Jane's time, it wasn't good to have the pity part because that led to gossip or something.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

I think this part is the key:

"Pity those who are mean or those who suffer in silence.
Life is too short to be sad and pitiful. Find a way to be happy and speak up! "

Finding a way to be happy is the best advice of all. I am glad you wrote this - sorry that it wasn't in time for the deadline.

This was my favorite part:

Unyielding, a rock,
Pain's not suffered meekly.
Never did he knock.
He was very sneaky.

I hope that you will post or list the winners somehow in the forum, in addition to the Newsfeed, with the amounts won. I think people like to see those things with these sorts of events.

What brought tHiNg to glide in a space time continuum over to your port?

*Cow* I posted here and then forgot to review. Well, here I am to send a review on the public page, which will hopefully give you some more publicity.

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

I qualify because I have been here for 17 years, less a few weeks.

The first time I joined was September 9, 2000, when it was just Interactive Stories and the site was 9 days old. I was in a group and someone told me to come on here we could write and not have to wait for a site editor to post our stories. They were Fan Fiction about the movie, Never Been Kissed, if you are familiar with that.

Well, I joined and we wrote our stories and SMs was a fan of the movie and stories, too. She sent me some awesome remoos and I kept writing and the rest is history.

I deleted myself (that sounds funny now) in August of 2001, but came back after 9/11.

I decided, then, to write non-fan fiction and branch out and again SMs encouraged me when I wrote a whole novel here, called Sara's Port, which is about two people who meet on early days Stories.Com (later changed to Writing.Com)

*Cool**Idea*

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

*Thumbsup* It is good to let Newbies know we were all newbies once and not to be intimidated if people give bossy reviews, not helpful reviews. We have all been there, seen that. *yawn*

Great in and out! Very inclusive, which is definitely the smart way to go anywhere in my books.

*Cow* I gave the prompt for this earlier in the week in "The Writer's Cramp. Although I was not the judge, I was interested to see what you wrote - thanks for sending me the link! I always like to see what my prompts bring forward.

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

This is a poem about internalizing, then spreading a lot of anger. It is a negative thing that can build on itself over time. It is better to laugh at the absurdity and ridiculousness of human behaviors and move along.

I typically withdraw in such a situation and work on forgiveness over time. Forgiveness does not mean you have to have anything to do with offenders. It just means that you let the anger go.

*Cool**Idea*

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

"But, love wins over
And reader, don't you worry
When anger meets compassion
There's always complete recovery."

Holding on to anger can be very debilitating. Recovery can take time, but when there is some compassion, it is almost always inevitable. I have had bullies insist that I agree with them when I never will here. I forgive them, but I stay away from them, too. So, it is sort of a withdrawl policy over time. I don't support bullies much because they do so much damage to those they wield power over.

In an ideal world, a bully will see the light and change. That would bring about a lot of compassion and forgiveness.

It's lovely to think so, anyway. Fine poem! Well done!

What brought tHiNg to glide in a space time continuum over to your port?

*Cow* I saw that you had added here, so here I am to read and send a review.

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* Of the three, I appreciate photography most. It is so comforting to look back on photos and items that were scrapbooked. It tells me that I wanted to remember that day and all that happened, when I preserve things. Sometimes, I surprise myself. Do you do that, too, with your scrapbooking?

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

I like how you address all three. Some of my best memories involve gardens, but I have no gift for that. My mother did and my Dad and I planted some things together that I never forgot about. I am more someone who mows the yard than tends a garden.

Paintings have brought me great comfort. One time, in France, I was so upset and went into a small Impressionist Museum and a feeling of calm I had never known before swept over me. I have some nice prints on the wall from the National Gallery of Art in D.C. I especially love Monet and Van Gogh's work.

It's amazing how art can comfort at times.

I enjoyed reading this entry, as I always do when I visit you. Well done, as usual!

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* I love the hint of a romance/friendship between Marta and Monty and the fact that she only goes into the bar in order to help her friend.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

Well, I love that they ride off and defeat the Hell's Angels Ruffians in the bargain. Sounds like a day well spent, but the fire in the taqueria seems like a heck of a distraction. Friendship is a powerful thing at any age.

I like how you make your characters people I can picture and think I would like. Here's to Monty and Marta!

Nice work!

*Cow* I saw that you added to this and came to read.

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea*Those are all really good suggestions. I guess I would pick ice cream or maybe some sort of pastry. I have a hard time eating cake anymore anyway because it gives me bad heartburn. I learned that the hard way on my birthday.

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

I think that even nothing and just singing is nice. We sing to Boo and give her a present and we call the grandkids and kids and sing to them on their birthdays. Now, the grandkids call and sing to us. That is pretty nice just to have a nice song sung to you on a special day.

Well, ice cream still works for me and then there are no candles to remind of how many years have passed.

Good entry, Megan!

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

I thought the story was brilliant. It is all street theatre to me. I totally agree with it being put on at times. Well, how do we tell the difference.

What we have here is Salvation Army. They do things like help families hurt by disaster so we can actually take the stuff we buy to the actual family. It cuts out the administrative money taking part of charitable donations. When they solicit money for disaster relief, I always recall the millions poured into Haiti. Haiti is still impoverished and very little went to help actual people in need. It went to help "world leaders' maintain their standard of living, I reckon.

With regard to street begging as a "profession", one time, when I was at the post office - that's where it all happens for me - I was walking back to my car. There was a big SUV parked right near me and a bunch of people were having a "discussion" about who got what corner. That SUV was very pricey and relatively new - and my car is about 13 years old now. They were talking about assignments to beg for money from drivers. That is done on every major corner in the city where I reside. I see one of them quite regularly, grasping onto a crutch and looking anguished. She looked a lot different fighting for her corner in that parking lot.

Quite the little actress.

*Cool**Idea*

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

I applaud the ending where kids do something positive so they won't end up like that. Mr. HOOves especially hates when grown ups use kids or hold up signs saying they are Homeless Vets begging for food. He doesn't buy that anyone who actually wore the uniform would be part of that.

Well, you never know until you do.

Great story!

What brought tHiNg to glide in a space time continuum over to your port?

*Cow* I saw this updated here and come to read. Some of these prompts are very interesting.

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

You are right, there is a special glow about a beautiful person. I think it shines from inside them and they can't really be beautiful without that certain something.

*Cool**Idea*

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

Most people don't appreciate things and take them for granted. When something is beautiful, it gets noticed and remarked upon. Some things cannot be ignore, I guess But I think that most individuals don't really recognize true beauty in their lives until it is gone. Somehow, that goes beyond the physical appreciation.

Very brief, but thoughtful entry. I think, with Jane Austen, her beauty came from within like this. Same with Princess Diana. It was that light shining from deep within their hearts.

A YaHOO Review from tHiNg!!!

What brought tHiNg to glide in a space time continuum over to your port?

*Cow* I saw your poem reviewed on the public reviewing page by PandaPaws Licensed VetTech and came to read. That is my idea of the best reviews that get a reader interested in going and checking out the work.

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

Well, we are coming up on it. Can it really be 16 years ago? And all that war that was fought and lives lost. When I think back, I wonder why we didn't just do something quick and definitive at the time.

Well, lots of things go through my head when I see the picture of the way those towers used to stand, as you say, watching over. I get choked up whenever I see a photo of what used to be from the 70's through the 90s as that is my New York. I don't know if I would ever want to revisit it because of that not being there.

On this site, a moderator was killed in one of the towers. She was the first person on this site to be memorialized. This is the link for her port - Bandit's Mama . I usually read in there this time of year and think about things. I always listen for her name to be read when they read them on that day. Her middle name is Connaughty.

*Cool**Idea*

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

This was the part that stays with me:

"Twin towers watched over a city full of pain
Hope seems like it’s lost, never to remain."

Somedays it still feels this way. I like your repeated refrain in the first and last stanza as the city is watched over again, this time by God. I only hope that's true.

Wonderful poem - I wouldn't change a thing!

What brought tHiNg to glide in a space time continuum over to your port?

*Cow* I gave the prompt for this a while back in "The Writer's Cramp. Even though I wasn't the judge I enjoy reading what you writers do with my prompts. I usually get to reading things eventually - August was crazy busy. That's my excuse and I'm stickin' to it! Always a pleasure to read and review your work!

Your settings are so vividly described that I can always picture them in my mind. This story is certainly no exception to that!

What does tHiNG think about while perusing your item?

I like the theme of the mother wanting better for her daughter and making her life miserable while she lets her know it, every waking moment. I think that most daughters would identify with the frustration expressed here.

Your story has a lot of action and back and forth - it is chock full of character interaction and drama. There are a lot of interesting characters, also.

*Cool**Idea*

What does tHiNG applaud about while reading your item?

Well, who could blame Snake's wife? I was totally with her, except for threatening Kelli. I wasn't sure why she was doing that except for a heat of the moment type deal.

This was fun to read and it had me smiling as it came back home to mama at the end. Nothing is ever good enough for this mama, apparently.

You made the starting over part seem very positive and fun and a natural progression of the narrator/lead character's inquisitive nature. And, the neighborhood interaction was an amusing side note and tension reliever as danger lurked.

Nicely done, indeed!
