Review Style

In my view, the primary focus should be on encouraging the writers to write. I do not review items I don't enjoy anymore because I see it as a waste of my time. So, if you get a review from me, I enjoyed reading your work. The amazing thing about this whole process is that reading an inspiring review usually leads to me reading more of a reviewer's work also. So, it's a win-win.

I will not review...

something I do not like. I do not enjoy writing hyper-critical reviews. I do NOT believe that "honesty" is a synonym for "mean." If I see someone being "mean" here on the public reviewing page, in group behaviors, or just acting as a bully I will not send them my reviews. The only exception to that would be judging a site contest - there all items get honest (and hopefully diplomatic) reviews of the work from me with no exceptions.

What brought Hoovsie meandering in a space time continuum over to your port?

I gave the prompt earlier in the week and wanted to see what you writers would do with it. I was not the judge, just an interested reader.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I think you capture the horror of medical care and treatment very effectively. It is a scary thing and it is very difficult to watch a loved one go through it. I think that is harder than actually being the patient, but I haven't been down that road yet so I'm not certain of it.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I admire the notion that death can be a release if people are prepared for it. The medical community uses the fear of death to manipulate a lot of money into their pockets at times. Well, hospitals are big businesses, after all really. Corporate greed is paramount over patient care in the big settings throughout the land.

To celebrate life and make another choice (besides sadness) is something wondrous and beautiful at the end of a well lived life.

I gave the prompt earlier in the week, but I was not the judge for The Writer's Cramp. I was interested to see what you brilliant writers would do with it!

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I love your poem and how you put a positive spin on it. The origin of the quote refers to the fact that Hemingway was feeling sad in the springtime when he didn't expect to like he normally did in the fall.

This is beautiful and haunting at the same time. All your words are well chosen and fit perfectly with the prompt and with finding ways to drive away the sadness as we go along.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

"No melancholy,
only contentment, as
another year began to wind down
and fade into memory."

Well, we can all choose to be happy at times. I think it is sometimes a choice, not always, but sometimes.

People have told me that nothing I do here is right. Well, I think it is and I'm the one who is doing the work so they can mind their business. I even got criticism about this prompt. Well, I've seen everything now as this prompt got thirteen people to write. Do your own thing and always write what you feel. That's the best advice I have ever given or received when it comes to writing.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought about how a lot of things were better way back then. It seems like a much better way to go, to have it all be a surprise, even that there were two. Your poem flows well and I liked going back in time when things were simpler and in some ways more straightforward.

One thing to mention is that you need to have a line count in the contest forum for poems and a word count if you write a story.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I liked this part best:

"In those days medicine was differently made.
No way of knowing the sex of the unborn babe."

That is for the reasons I stated - simpler time with no cell phones.

I am reading in your Prince Writing Journal and enjoying the songs.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I had not heard of this before. He gets right to the point, doesn't he. I like the idea of it all slowing down.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I suppose in this world he lived in, things happen so quick because people feel as if they knew him. We knew him through his music. But maybe he would have had a longer and happier life if he would have taken it slower. It is sad to think of him gone. I thought my childhood died that day in April. I felt that in a way I didn't for anyone else who has passed on.

It seems like a lot of them have gone on. If we get to heaven, we know there will be beautiful music, don't we? With Prince, I have a vision of him on a bike riding through his town. It was a few days before he died and he looked so carefree and happy. I felt that he was and is riding through heaven on that bike, singing. Nice to think so, anyway.

As Joy said in the comments part, you sound very fashionable! I like the purple color for things too. You are much more put together than I am with the accessories!

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I wear capris, also! I get the nice ones at Kohl's. For purses, yours sound interesting. I am totally into Vera Bradley Turn Lock Satchel purse. They are so light weight. I get them on sale when the patterns are discontinued.

Like you, I cannot wear heels. Because of my back and hip, I don't want to fall so I wear the Sperry Topsider shoes a lot. I have heard a lot of people like those Sketchers though. I will check them out, also.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I think there is a lot of suspense and action so you did a fine job with that. I was worried for Harry's safety there with the choking going on.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I especially liked how the silver doe saved the day by being so quick. Animals can tell when good humans are in danger and going the extra mile to save Harry was very magical and nice.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

This is another one that I didn't know about. The only Dawn song I knew of was the 4 Seasons song in the 1960's. But that was "Dawn" and not "The Dawn"

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I like your assertion that each new day is an opportunity to move forward. Well, time is our friend and our enemy. Interesting that he wrote a song called this as I think he might have died at Dawn. Well, maybe it is a premonition like his Snows in April song. He had a feeling or something.

Well, he wrote a lot of fine lyrics in his short life. We can all celebrate his genius by learning about the songs we didn't realize were out there.

I am reading in your Prince Writing Challenge Songs Journal and sending a review.

What Does hooves think about while perusing your item?

I had never heard of this song or a lot of the other songs either. I think some of his best work is in the stuff that was never a hit. I think that unrequited love is one of the best motivators for writing or music.

Whoever she was, she inspired him here, didn't she?

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

Like, you I wish that Prince would have had his dreams come true more. I think he wrote a lot out of frustration with things. Someone in his position would have had a hard time having a normal relationship. There are so many people who hang on someone like that and it is hard to tell who is genuine. Well, he didn't have good people around him at the end or he'd still be here.

Maybe in heaven, he is with his dream love. I hope so and that it is all music and things nice for him.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I like how you chose this title and what you did with the essay. You have named some great and memorable romances in books and films.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

Romance is something that appeals to most of us in our reading and watching, I think. I like the romantic comedies the best as I never had a romance where there wasn't a sense of humor on the other side.

I love the humor in Jane Austen's writing as it is so subtle at times. She was an astute observer of the human condition.

I was thinking of my favorite romance movie. I sort of think it is While You Were Sleeping with Sandra Bullock. But those you named were good, too. I love the romance between the Captain and Maria in Sound of Music.

And you are right about Danielle Steel. When I want to read a quality romance work that has me caring about the characters right from the start, it is Danielle Steel who I turn to as a reliable storyteller. The last book I bought for my mom was Toxic Bachelor by Danielle Steel. She was very happy as she enjoyed her writing a lot. I used to get her a Danielle Steel book for every mother's day, birthday and Christmas as she is such a reliable writer and producer of books to buy.

I saw that you had added to your Blog Challenge Journal, so here I am to read and send a review. Plus it is almost your big anniversary day, isn't it, Megan? 15 years this Sunday!

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought about Harry Potter and these prompts. I read the first book and saw the first movie last year. I am no expert. I think your adventure is in line with what I read in the book. I think you did a good job with the character of Harry, who always seems to be planning the next adventure.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I enjoyed reading this and all the intrigue involved. My grandson, Ben, told me to read Harry Potter and so I did. It is, to me, mostly about characters and the one of Harry, who was bullied for most of his years growing up. I think that what you have written is in line with him always wanting to help others and never being selfish about things.

I think that you are remarkable in having beaten the odds in so many ways.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

Your medical thing is like Mr. HOOves had. They told him and me that he had a 15% chance of seeing the next day. Well he saw it and more and is still here more than five years later. He, too, was on a breathing tube. They didn't bring him around from Tuesday night until Sunday evening.

I think when people go through something like it, it puts a lot of other stuff in perspective. We always think about that time and this past October was the 5th anniversary so Mr. HOOves ordered big THank You cakes and we took them to the doctors who saved his life. The V.A. doctors who almost killed him are another story, but our local medical people really went the extra mile to make sure he is here to see his grandchildren grow and to play golf and do what he enjoys.

That is such a blessing that we are so grateful for every day, as I know you are.

I bet, once you retire, a lot more things will come true for you.

I think that you hit the nail on the head when you describe how Prince combines beautiful things in the world of nature along with modern things that have to do with computers and the digital world.

The title of this song is the perfect example of that. Well, you could go a lot of ways with it, I think.

I think you did a great job with this and with analyzing what makes the music so appealing and the words so engaging.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I think it is about the magic of childhood and what can be seen if we only pay attention to that beauty which surrounds us.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

Magic Mirror, what sounds are these?"
Whistling birds, singing flowers, and buzzing bees."

Sometimes with rushing around we forget to look at all of these wonders and comforts that are everywhere on a Spring day. Children see things that we adults forget about, but would be much better off if we could share in the wonder.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

There is a lot of chasing going on. I hope Crookshanks is careful about chasing those squirrels. I do not think they make a tasty morsel.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

The dog seems to be right there in the action. Sirius seems like a willing participant in chasing the rodents and keeping up with Crookshanks. When it comes to a dog and a cat, I am not sure who would be in charge. I suspect it would be the cat, though.

I guess it all depends on if the dog is hyper or easygoing like my Boo.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

The blame game can be very destructive. Well it is good to own up when we make mistakes as we all do. When people insist that they "did nothing wrong" then I know that they never own up to any mistakes.

I make mistakes all the time in my judgment and otherwise.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

That thing you said about people grabbing credit for the work of others really hit home. I think that happens too much, along with those who take ideas and projects and appropriate them for their own betterment. Sometimes it catches up to them and sometimes it doesn't. Life is peculiar in its timing sometimes.

When I make a mistake I feel bad about it. I also feel bad when other people insist that they are never wrong. That can be very disappointing, but we all know how humans can be at times I guess. It is best not to forget that.

What brought Hoovsie meandering in a space time continuum over to your port?

I gave the prompt that this was written for in The Writer's Cramp, earlier in the week. I was not the judge, but I like to come and read the writing that is inspired by my prompts, if I have a chance. I am always amazed at what you writers do with my prompts.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

This is about living life in a way that life would teach us to do. Life is hard and it beats us up at times. We all have these times when we are passive observers to our own lives. We may want to take charge, but again and again, life comes along and smacks us down in discouragement.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part of your poem:

"Carpe diem they yell at me.
Me, hidden under the covers.
No new day shall find me unafraid.
This fear forever above me hovers."

I think it is really brave to stand alone for something you believe in. You stand alone and take charge - that's being very courageous. Not that many people can truthfully say they stood up to much in life. It is all herd mentality and go along to get along.

This sounds like quite an adventure, starting off with the flying car. Well, that would certainly take them where they want to go in order to explore and get the map all sorted out.

I liked the leopard being there with the treasure items. The leopard was welcoming and not mean. That was nice because the leopard knew he was among friends.

I received my wonderful Jane Austen newsletter in my e-mail! It perked me up so much to log in and see it. I have been feeling so sad for a while now here and this and a couple of other things boosted my spirits tremendously.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

It is great how you are always learning new things about Jane Austen so that you know more and more about her. Thank you so much for sharing what you learn with the other fans of her work on this site.

I read a lot about Ernest Hemingway. I am always learning new things about him and his writing. Their lives are so interesting when they write like they do, enthralling so many people.

Jennifer Ehle was in The King's Speech. I didn't realize it was her the first time I saw that. She played the speech therapist's wife. I would never have recognized her without someone telling me that was her. She's a really talented actress and I think she could play any part and do it well.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

It is nice to read that she had a brother that looked out for her and gave her proper credit. Since she died so young, I suppose he could have grabbed a lot of credit for himself. He took it upon himself to protect and preserve the memory of a beloved sister. And he presented her in a positive light. I feel like we all know her best from her own words, but the brother's portrayal of her certainly seems to fit.

You sent me a very nice review, so here I am moseying over to read and take a walk in Web Witch's woods in my head.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

What a beautiful dragonfly. I think we find things and see things when we are meant to do so. The timing is up to a force beyond us. You saw and were unable to photograph the Dragonfly at first. This lead to some reflection and contemplative thought about everything going on.

You were open to seeing what the dragon fly meant. I think sometimes, I am more open than others to this sort of introspection.

Then, in time, you were able to get your photograph, but you had something in mind that was a lot more valuable.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

"The dragonfly with its delicate wings and powerful flight couldn’t help but give me a peaceful feeling and at the same time renewing my strength so I could handle each project one at a time, and without stressing over it."

Inspiration is all around us, if only we open up our minds and let it in.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

This is a story about friends, stuck inside a post office. They seem to be at each other from the beginning, but an unusual thing happens over the course of an evening's time.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I like how being stuck like this forced both of them to take a long look at their own behavior and their relationship. It was interesting to see that what might have divided them further only brought them closer.

Very fine story! I thought the dialogue was great and I enjoyed reading it very much!

I should have known with the government anything is possible. And, it usually doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I could feel the mounting frustration on all sides.

Being shut in is one thing, but being under government control is the real horror. You did a fine job with the prompt - very chilling and imaginative!
