In my view, the primary focus should be on encouraging the writers to write. I do not review items I don't enjoy anymore because I see it as a waste of my time. So, if you get a review from me, I enjoyed reading your work. The amazing thing about this whole process is that reading an inspiring review usually leads to me reading more of a reviewer's work also. So, it's a win-win.

I will not review...

something I do not like. I do not enjoy writing hyper-critical reviews. I do NOT believe that "honesty" is a synonym for "mean." If I see someone being "mean" here on the public reviewing page, in group behaviors, or just acting as a bully I will not send them my reviews. The only exception to that would be judging a site contest - there all items get honest (and hopefully diplomatic) reviews of the work from me with no exceptions.

That is scary that guy who had matches and made threats. I think you can see a lot in peoples' eyes. But you have to know what you are looking for.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

It is creepy to think of the eyes that Stephen King has looked into. I suspect he's looked in the mirror some and scared himself at times.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

It is a very interesting thing to think of going through grandma's attic. You never know when you will find a connection or a door to the past.

Fine story. I think that Forrest got more than he bargained for. Very well written. I like the title, also.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I think that we all control a lot more in our lives and reactions than we realize. Maybe it takes a while to learn that power is there. In the next to last paragraph, first word, you need an "n" there to have it as "On" which is what I think was intended.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I liked having the poster as a talisman to rub. That seemed very endearing and comforting to me. The words will endure long after the tape has faded into memory even when it is so closely held. That is the way of the world. Things that seem so critical at first have a tendency to blur into the past.

Very interesting piece you have written here. Nicely done!

I saw you had posted here so I came to read and share my thoughts about it all.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

It is only a few more days. I guess the thing I am looking forward to the most is seeing her dress.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

If I wake up I'll watch it, but I'm not going to make a special thing to wake up at 3. Knowing me I will forget in the middle of the night that it is going on.

To me, it is not the same level of excitement I had for Diana's wedding. But when I wake up I will watch and I bet it will still be going on then and they will show replays. Maybe I will see it on Youtube replayed now. We have so many ways to see it now, much more than in 1981. I wish all the best for it all.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought of classic cars, black and white TV and years gone by. I also thought of that Dinah Shore commercial where she blows a kiss - I am not sure if it was an actual commercial or just at the end of the show she had.

I wasn't there to see the show, but I did see film of her kiss blowing routine.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I like this part especially:

"Or we can just hop in the
’57 convertible and head over
to Steak n Shake for a bite to eat.
In sight, it must be right."

I like how you combine the old with what is still here, namely Steak and Shake.

I saw that you had added here, so here I am to share my thoughts with a review.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

My nephew had a pet lizard once. I forget what it was - an iguana maybe? I wish I could remember.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

Animals are very nice to have around. They are much more straightforward than humans and easier to read. I think the iguana was a good pet for my nephew, but was my nephew a good human for his iguana. There's the question.

But all animals are sweet.

I wish I had got a dog earlier in my married life. I always wanted one. Early on we had hamsters but they weren't that exciting. Rodents don't thrill me I guess although I was very saddened by their demise. Kids were all promising to look after them but it fell to me. Their names were Nipsey and Clover, Nipsey for obvious reasons. He bit. They had to have seperate cages because Nipsey also (besides biting us) bit Clover. More moody than people might think.

You posted on my Newsfeed song, Carry On My Wayward Son by Kansas.

Sometimes music inspires wonderful writing and this is certainly one of those times.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I think the music of the 60s and 70s really holds the key to happy life and low blood pressure for me. There was so much wisdom in those lyrics.

I get very mad at some of the news media and their antics. Politicians, forget about it. All pretty much in my doghouse, both parties.

Solace comes from enjoyment of creativity and freedom of expression.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite passage:

"Don’t succumb to lies that you hear.
Stand up to the rumors and fear
spread by those who seek to enslave
shunning gifts our forefathers gave."

I think we all know what is real if we stop and just experience our own lives and forget about the big show that goes on. I wish that I did not know things I know from the news because what can I do about it? Just have high blood pressure and grumble.

Enjoy the day and music and the natural world. That's pretty good advice most days.

I am reading and reviewing your item at 9:32 AM, WDC time, and storing it in my review tool for later delivery, after the contest winners are announced. As per the contest rules, no subsequent revisions or edits were considered in writing this review.

What does HOOves think about and contemplate while perusing your item?

I think your story is a good one about trying to find a use for a family heirloom that is obviously important for some reasons as it is a connection to a post wartime event or decision. There is the hint that the decision might be based on something triggering in the wartime service. That is a good premise.

Your story is a lot less than 1,000 words. It is okay to do that, but you need to provide the specific word count. To get the specific word count in the future, click on the gear in the top right of your item, where you also have the edit choice. You will see "word count" there as one of your options. You can click there to get the specific number. Most contests require that you provide the actual word count, rather than a range.

A family passes on a tradition of seven virtues. The requirements are met in various ways including the saving and care of an injured kitten.

Your language is eloquent and moving, especially this passage:

"Words can paint pictures, and art is where the heart is. Patience is how we deal with discovery, even if it’s not what we set out to do."

A family can retain connection to each other by focusing on the development and nurturing of such virtues. Things like greed and intolerance are no where to be seen.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I think that there is a basic common denominator about readers in all genres. They like characters that project things about themselves. I don't want to read about the perfect person doing something for very long because I can't identify with that.

Heroes come in all sorts of forms.

One thing I have noticed is that there is a scarcity of original stories and characters. Hollywood tends to go with what has worked in the past and they refurbish old things a lot.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

When writers and creators think outside of the fences they have built for themselves, that is when a great story is born with characters that are more real than what has been thrust out in the past.

Taking chances and pushing boundaries is not safe, but it's where brilliant creativity resides. I bet this was an interesting thing to have attended.

I have to confess that Martha is a hero of mine, but I do think she is funny in this way at times.

The ending was hilarious! I enjoyed her little surprise. I especially like how you don't spell out what is in the cake. It is left to reader's imagination.

You have captured Martha's diva routine to a "T".

I thought the whole story was very entertaining and I could picture every minute of it in my mind.

My goodness you have accomplished a lot and observed a lot - that is a lot of writing and supporting others to have done in less than two years. I like the way this is set up so that you can click on the links, also. I am doing that I Write in 2018 activity so this will be an invaluable tool for me in finding places to write. It is always good to remember the fallen. You have done so with eloquence and reverence. A poem to be proud of is here.

This was my favorite passage:

"A gentle wind is faintly heard.
It seems to command, “Carry on!”
Perhaps the branches have been stirred
adorned with dog tags of those gone."

Carry on is a great legacy. What other course of action would honor them quite so well?

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

A young person gets more than they bargained for while helping grandpa to do a good deed.

I remember being that young once, way in the past and I was equally clueless.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

A day spent paying it forward is never wasted. There are too many days in youth that are wasted, but that's what its for (youth I mean). Military experience brings a few home truths to bear, but we all learn things when we are meant to learn them.

Grandpa teaches a good lesson by example.

Wonderful story - inspirational and heart warming that there are those who do this sort of thing as a natural part of living their lives. Bravo to grandpa!

I noticed you haven't been here for a while so I was looking in your portfolio and I found this. Hope all is well with you, my friend!

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

This reminds me of waking up in the middle of the night in a panic. It is the kind of thoughts I have then, but maybe everyone has them. I try to be busy enough to push them away most days. Just putting one foot (or hoof) in front of the other can be a scary proposition at times.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

"Living in a shell
of self...a blanket
of clouds shroud you out
and away...where you end up
isn't always
where you want to be,
but so what?
If you're somewhere, then surely
you must be someone...
says anyone. "

The mention of clouds struck a chord with me, it all did.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

This is a very well written and moving list. I do believe that happiness and living well are choices that we make every day. It does take a lot of something to keep trying and keep working at things.

Lots of things in life happen where we are taken for granted. But as long as we try not to take ourselves for granted we will be okay. We can't control anything but us. I think you get that point across very articulately.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I was particularly impressed with this part:

"Saying that your life is out of your control is a copout – it’s what other people want you to believe so that they have an easier time getting you to do what they want you to do."

And we all run into those vampires who angle for control. No one is that important, though, you are so right.

I thought this was something to keep in mind on hard days especially.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

Today is going to be a very hot spring day. But you brought back the chill of winter and a reminder that weather can change so much in just an instant.

It is nice to think of last winter in the rear view mirror as it lasted way too long and brought late frost to tender vegetation.

Finally, now I review this from the relative comfort of Spring - with a high in the 90s today. What a change!

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite passage:

"The sky is grey and overcast with anticipation,
Soon we'll see some sort of winter precipitation.
The clouds have decided it's snow they are throwing.
Fast and furious ghost flakes, twirling and blowing."

The rhyme is very well constructed and I love that imagery of the clouds throwing that snow! Lovely to think of in the past this year!

I think you have compiled a comprehensive list of practical and affordable suggestions for planning a wedding that people can live with later on, as far as expenditures are concerned. I have never thought that putting on a big party was worth going into debt.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I particularly like the barn idea and working with family to make it a meaningful event for all. When people contribute their time and baking and that sort of thing they feel more a part of the festivities. You give a lot of good, common sense advice that young people don't always come up with.

I had a small wedding and I never regretted it. Everything was affordable and the marriage has lasted. I was more interested in being able to travel to Ireland later than having an expensive dress or huge party. It is interesting to me that all of my contemporaries who had huge, wildly expensive weddings didn't have marriages that lasted.

Mine is (knock on wood) into its third decade as I write this.

I gave the prompt in "The Writer's Cramp"

earlier in the week and was interested to see what you writers would do with it. I was not the judge of it, but I was interested just the same.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I like the idea of two friends meeting up in their favorite city. They don't live in Milwaukee, but they love it and appreciate getting together there all the more.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

Maybe this is the best way to enjoy a city, knowing it is a favorite. The two friends appreciate their time there more, living away, and they don't take anything (especially the friendship) for granted.

I enjoyed reading this very much. I took my favorite city (my home city) for granted while I was there, but now I appreciate it so much.

earlier in the week. I was not the judge, but was interested to see what you writers would do with the prompt.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

This lovely poem expresses a heartfelt attachment to Pittsburgh, the place you feel is your true home. It is the way I feel about Washington D.C. and Arlington, Virginia at times. One wants to be at peace and at home when that final journey arrives.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

"I've asked for my ashes
to be scattered from here.
I'll see you in Pittsburgh
when my end draws near."

Very eloquent and moving. I almost moved to Pittsburgh for a job when I was in my 20's. IT was a turning point, that decision because I stayed in D.C. and met Mr. HOOves a month after that. Well, that was a long time ago.

What an awesome tribute to a beloved family member. I once knew a kitty cat named Mittens who was very beloved. This reminded me of her.

I think it is a strong love indeed when you do something for their sake and for the best that you know will break your own heart. It takes a lot of love to let go sometimes.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I think you did a fine job with this.

Those guys in the video are at the age where they care so much about what their contemporaries think. So, they are dictated by fashions that are ever changing.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I am with you on the music. It all sounds the same to me and I don't know quite what to make of it. But that is what my Dad used to say about the Beatles. It all sounded like noise to him.

Still, you did a fine job with this and I hope you get the nice music badge.

Being retired is a good stress reliever. I would not want to be young in current times with all the communication going on. It is too much for me.

I think that this poem is a well written affirmation of faith. I know the tune well and it is an upbeat one which goes perfectly with the words you have written.

I am reading and reviewing your item at 9:53AM WDC time, and storing it in my review tool for later delivery, after the contest winners are announced. As per the contest rules, no subsequent revisions or edits were considered in writing this review.

This is done so that I can give the next prompt at noon and announce the winner as close to that time as possible. I also like to send out reviews to all the entrants when time permits, so it gives me the morning to do that, also.

What does HOOves think about and contemplate while perusing your item?

I think that the birds bad luck is good luck for the ants. Someone's tragedy is always another's positive event. It's the way of the world, natural and otherwise. I like how you have used the prompt line and summarized the way of the world so accurately and succinctly.

What does HOOves applaud and moo about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

"Juicy red liquid sugar plopped in droplets down to the ground,
enticing ants who marched in a row to slurp such a sweet treat."

When there is spillage, ants usually find a way to capitalize, don't they?

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I like how this progresses from passive - being moved by water and controlled by forces beyond one's control - then it moves to taking charge at the end by being the one doing the forward movement. No longer a passive observer of one's own fate, positive action follows.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite passage:

"I was moved about too many places
Each time struck with a new view of mountains
Mountains I could never reach to climb"

Breaking out of the frustration is a metaphor for taking charge of one's life.

I like the way you transition forward without being explicit about what is happening. At times that is exactly the way life treats us.
