Review Style

In my view, the primary focus should be on encouraging the writers to write. I do not review items I don't enjoy anymore because I see it as a waste of my time. So, if you get a review from me, I enjoyed reading your work. The amazing thing about this whole process is that reading an inspiring review usually leads to me reading more of a reviewer's work also. So, it's a win-win.

encouraging others to write because I love to read.

I will not review...

something I do not like. I do not enjoy writing hyper-critical reviews. I do NOT believe that "honesty" is a synonym for "mean." If I see someone being "mean" here on the public reviewing page, in group behaviors, or just acting as a bully I will not send them my reviews. The only exception to that would be judging a site contest - there all items get honest (and hopefully diplomatic) reviews of the work from me with no exceptions.

I like the title you have chosen. We all look to our siblings for support at times. It is the way of families.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite passage:

"I know you are there no matter what and I thank you God for my evil has stopped.

Oh sister you walk with me show me the way to the master’s tree."

We all have to find our way to our own faith and the light. Very inspiring words that I enjoyed reading a lot.

What does HOOves think about and contemplate while perusing your item?

This is a story about a relationship that was doomed from the start by ulterior motives.

What does HOOves applaud and moo about while reading your item?

I loved the humor in this and the thinking of the bride, right through to the end.

This part was funny:

"It was funny when Roger tried to act tough. It was like Strawberry Shortcake getting an edgy reboot; some things just don’t work."

In the end, I guess the joke there is on our first person narrator. This is a story of greed and plotting, well told. So, Roger, who had his own motives wins out. I was rooting for her in the end in this well told, twisted tale.

You did a fine job with the prompt! The satirical irony of that last line stays with me. Irony is an effective driver of fiction, especially when that irony is subtle, as it is here. All the characters in this are a bit morally misguided - they share that trait. No one is innocent or doing everything from altruistic motives, so it is difficult to know who to root for, but ultimately I chose her.

Brilliant work and I enjoyed reading this very much!

I am reading and reviewing your fine poem as part of the I Write in 2018 activity.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

The title of this fine poem is the date today. I am not sure if that is a requirement of the activity of not. It certainly speaks to me of current events with all the pictures that are presented in the media.

It is a horrifying thing that may well portend the beginning of the end.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This part was very moving:

"All my leaves will have withered
and grayed,
though a fiery center remains.
The apocalypse is now"

I think this is a timeless poem that could have well been written about what went on in Auschwitz, Treblinka and on and on.

It seems like every generation has their own atrocities, but the fire of anger and survival burns bright.

Very powerful writing that will stand the test of time.

I wanted to wish you a very Happy and rewarding account anniversary - your 8th! It seems like you have been here a lot longer than that - you've done so much good for people.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I love the show. The friendship of the two characters always interested me. I love both of them in different ways.

More partial to William Shatner am I for some reason. He amuses me. My Dad was more intrigued by Mr. Spock. I think at the time the show aired Mr. Spock was more popular, but I could be remembering it wrong. William Shatner has longevity, career wise. What a force to be reckoned with!

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

"The Enterprise was their ship,
So fast, it gave enemies the slip.
Warp speed? No problem!
It was really awesome.
Exploring on many trips."

I think they left a lot to our imaginations. I like Star Trek better than the stuff that followed. The original TV show is so clever and they worked with such basic stuff, yet they foretold the future and recognized the important things in life are friendship first, then space exploration.

You capture the essence of that in your fine poem. No violations of the prime directive here! Well done!

I think that the greatest love for another is the one that loves enough to let go and move along. Giving up someone can be a hard thing to do, but when it's right it's hard to argue with that course of action.

This was my favorite part:

"We started off as friends but you moved on;
you never saw the love that slowly grew.
Had I the courage – but that time is gone,
fading before the sun like morning dew."

I must confess that I love shoes, but can only manage to wear one kind - sperry topsiders. This is because I am afraid of falling and I need to have something sturdy and stable to get around in.

I do love to look at beautiful shoes, though and I envy those who can strut around in them.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

This is engaging right from the beginning. I bet a lot of people identify with mixed feelings centered around Valentine's Day. It can be such a forced holiday.

This seems like a chance meeting, but later we learn that a special cupid had a hand in bringing Angie and Drew together.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I loved the cheese puffs in the title and picturing their mutual love for the delicious snack. It brought me back to a time early-on where Mr. HOOves and I confessed a mutual love of Cheetos.

Loved the ending, but I will not give it away in the review - I enjoyed reading this very much!

Unfortunately this happens more than we might think, even in dreams. I always suspect that those who truly need help are most loathe to ask for it.

This was very well written and the suspense was built up just right for me as a reader. It reminded me of that saying about every good deed is duly punished in time or something like that.

Expose is a great title. You never know what you will find at the beach, if you look closely enough.

I particularly am a fan of your "s" alliteration here.

You use few words, but manage to set the scene and take the reader (this reader, anyway) along with you to the sandy shore.

Secrets are found and treasures, too.

What does HOOves think about and contemplate while perusing your item?

Your protagonist, Crom, gets a message from his mother. He must fight a good fight and then his mother's spirit will be free. I felt like I got to know him and see inside his soul. Your story is brief, but you pack a lot of character exposition and action into it.

What does HOOves applaud and moo about while reading your item?

I love the descriptions and the character revelations in this fine story. Your title is excellent. Crom is on a passage to loving his mother enough to do what is needed to be done and then setting her on her journey to a better place.

This reads like it could be expanded into a longer story, perhaps of Crom's life journey. It seems like he is well on his way as an admirable character with lots of bravery and skills.

It brought a tear to my eye. In the end Crom learns the ultimate lesson in loving his mother. She wants the best for him and he knows that. He must learn to love her enough to let her go. We all make a similar journey, but his is full of heroism and love from mother to son and back again.

This wonderful story touched my heart. You engaged my emotions as a reader, as well as my brain. Reading is an event of the imagination and creativity too, when the writing is so well done! I admire characters so much who do for others, unselfishly expending great effort to attain something for someone else is so genuine and such a caring thing. You soared with this prompt. Absolutely soared!

This incident in Spain must have happened during the running of the bulls in July. Well, it could be the cat turned things around or it might have started with the bulls. I give the bovines credit for a lot of it.

This was my favorite part:

"I ran to Spain through mountain range,
saw vibrant pueblos (for a change),
and sipped sangria through the night,
La vida es alright."

Your poem is very amusing and your rhyming is spot-on for me.

I clicked on the Read and Review option on the left side of the screen and it took me to your fine story. At some point, you might want to consider giving it another title as I think it deserves one and so does Wally.

Wally is a character who is compassionate and caring. He learns about people in ways they may not appreciate, but no harm is ever meant. It is only him finding out who needs an extra bit of TLC and is done with the best of intentions.

I love the ending and the conclusion that he may need his customers more than they need him. It's hard to imagine that, but with such a warm and concerned individual it may not be far off the mark.

The highlight for me is getting to know Wally and how he thinks. It's kindness and caring all the way through for him.

Very inspiring and moving story here! I will not soon forget Wally and his big heart!

I clicked on Read and Review and it brought me to your very moving, and forward-seeing into the future, poem.

It is amazing that we can apply this to so many instances now that it has become a weekly occurrence in this country. When I was young, the biggest fear we had was jumping under our desks because of the chance of a nuclear war. That was scary, but I cannot imagine the idea of a shooter loose in any of the public schools I attended back in the stone age.

The title is haunting because of all that has happened in the time that has passed since you wrote this.

The ending words stay with me:

"leaving only a silent question:
"Where can we be safe?"'

The answer would be nowhere anymore.

Sad to say there is so much painful truth in these words. Brilliant, as always!

You make an excellent point with your post. I think that it is very possible that all kinds of people read our work here and we don't know who it might be. It is a public site where we have posted. Plus, you have published so you never know who might stumble on the writing. If someone likes to read and comes here maybe they would tell us and maybe not. It could be anyone, anywhere in the world.

I had a friend a long time ago who had a Michael Vartan website. She did a really good job with it and didn't allow any nasty stuff or dumb gossip about him. Well, in the end, she got to meet him and he and his manager were around the site all the time checking on it. They asked her to do the official site. So, Michael Vartan is a famous guy in Alias and Never Been Kissed and Monster-in-Law. And he was on her site and who knows where else because she told him about the fan fiction stuff here on Stories.Com at that time. So, Michael Vartan dated Jennifer Garner for a while. You never know who is where on the internet. He could have told her and she could tell others.

Always, we should put our best hooves forward because you never know who is looking around here for whatever reason.

I am reading and reviewing your item at 10:05 AM, WDC time, and storing it in my review tool for later delivery, after the contest winners are announced. As per the contest rules, no subsequent revisions or edits were considered in writing this review.

This is done so that I can give the next prompt at noon and announce the winner as close to that time as possible. I also like to send out reviews to all the entrants when time permits, so it gives me the morning to do that, also.

What does HOOves think about and contemplate while perusing your item?

I could readily identify with this. It is clever what you have done. At first I was confused and thought it was a poem, but when I read through I realized it is a short story about the dilemma of making a mistake. We all make them and wish we could take things back. Some are loathe to admit it and some go for the old adage that confession is good for the soul. What I did recently was whine about something I should have just brushed off my haunches like a pesky fly.

You know I have had people who do innovative things before. You might be surprised to know that sometimes judges get scolded (by other entrants and such) for thinking outside of the box. You never know when there will be a full moon or some such influence that makes some kick the side of the barn, so to speak.

What does HOOves applaud and moo about while reading your item?

I like the clever nature and the originality of combining the poem with the story, but using the word count since the story sort of overrides. I enjoyed your original take on the prompt. I love it when you come up with something that amazes me. I'm like, HOOves why didn't you think of that. I get to scold myself and that can be therapeutic at times.

What brought Hoovsie meandering in a space time continuum over to your port?

I am reading this as part of the I Write in 2018 activity, Week 22. It is always a pleasure to read your work.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I took this to be waking up and experiencing the morning after vows were exchanges, in other words after a wedding. To me it is positive and forward looking, which is what should happen. That would be the case if everything went well with the big ceremony.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I also felt a bit of melancholy, maybe I am reading something into this, but a bit of sentiment over letting go of a past way of life. There is that in the mix too, always. I liked the tiniest hint of something I read as regret. It makes it more balanced somehow. Well, there is always a down side where there is an up side to big events in life.

You packed a lot of eloquence into a short poem - well done!

This hit very close to home. I could readily identify. When you go away it is a bit of required rest and relaxation because you are no longer at the location of any possible "to do" list.

I like the underlying message which is be careful what you wish for because you might just get it. This is an important life lesson.

What brought Hoovsie meandering in a space time continuum over to your port?

I am doing the I Write Activity and you posted before me. Long time no see.

(Kidding of Course) We have a weekly drink at the Writer's Cafe/Watering Trough, it would seem.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

This was an enchanted story-poem about a child and a dragon. Both fill up the lonely places in each other. It brought to mind that great Peter, Paul and Mary song, Puff the Magic Dragon.

Magic still exists if we retain the hearts and minds we had as children and trade them for the adult cunning and too often mean spiritedness that comes with it all. A lot of adults would get a sour puss on about what I just wrote. That is how you tell they have lost the child in them - by their twisted facial expressions and hyper-critical attitude.

I don't think you or I have that problem as we still appreciate music and words that bless our lives.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

"He told me of the “in-between” where only children go;
a place where dragons live and magic still exists.
He told me of the wonders there that only children know.
How the clouds are just like slides, full of turns and twists."

Oh to be a kid again and experience anything close to this. This poem manages to be both down-to-earth and rich in introspective insight. That is not an easy balance to achieve. If there were a designated poet for this site, I think you'd be it. The amazing thing about reading is how it takes on a life of its own when it's good. We remember what we read if we are lucid enough to have a rewarding experience, such as this one.

Carry on, my wayward son and all that!

That is scary that guy who had matches and made threats. I think you can see a lot in peoples' eyes. But you have to know what you are looking for.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

It is creepy to think of the eyes that Stephen King has looked into. I suspect he's looked in the mirror some and scared himself at times.

It is a very interesting thing to think of going through grandma's attic. You never know when you will find a connection or a door to the past.

Fine story. I think that Forrest got more than he bargained for. Very well written. I like the title, also.
