The Good Life.
I am a professional musician  , worship leader  , small business owner  , songwriter  , aspiring author   and freelance nonfiction writer   with a chemical engineering degree  .

But that's just my resume.

My profile of qualifications is only one of the ways in which I am unique. Here I chronicle my personal and professional goals and my efforts to achieve them. Occasionally I fail. Mostly, I take daily baby steps toward all my long-term goals. Much like the stories I pen, the songs I compose, and the businesses I run, I am always a work in progress.

In progress and on schedule. I'm ahead of schedule, actually, thanks to the abrupt and unexpected resignation of my Praise Band co-directing partner and long-time friend, Emily. I mentioned it a couple days ago, and how it means that I have full responsibility as director. Naturally, that comes with twice the salary as well as twice the work.

But it's just weird.

Still, she has some things to work out at home, so I wish her the best as she gets her life straightened out. And since we still teach lessons together at the studio, we should see each other regularly enough. Bless her heart for getting me the job there in the first place!

At the Star Wars concert last Wednesday, we walked down to the concourse level during intermission to look for the movie props. I was the first to notice one, and I grabbed the 11-year-old's sleeve: "Blaine! Check it out! It's Han Solo, when he was frozen in that stuff." The six-year-old boy standing next to us looked up at me and said, "It's called carbonite."

I'm sure I imagined the what-kind-of-an-idiot-are-you,-lady look on his face.

...I say that like I don't work on Saturday. And Sunday. But, hey! My Saturday and Sunday jobs are all fun jobs! *Delight* My students are all playing in a recital on Sunday afternoon, including Keith's daughter, Abby. I arranged a cool version of Carol of the Bells for her level, and she loves it! I notice when kids enjoy a song, they practice it more. No brainer? Yes, but sometimes these things need to be pointed out, just so you keep them in mind when you're doing things like - oh, I don't know - drafting music instruction books. *Bigsmile*

*Pencil*Pending. Actually, what the heck: *Check*Goal met. We launched two songs in November, the second of which we launched on 11/29, and it's Advent. I can't squeeze in something new when everyone wants to sing the old Christmas favorites, and I launched two in November by design anyway, knowing December would be tight. I'm trying to overachieve here, but I just decided to move my overachievedness to another category. Like maybe writing more articles for money or moving forward on my music instruction books. This is a great time of year to do the latter, because I have cool ideas about how to incorporate holiday and recital music into instruction books.

*Pencil*In progress and still going strong. I agree with Seisa-sleepingcatbooks.com on the book binding thing: books that won't stay open on your music stand make you want to throw things. I was going through that with a glue-bound book on a piano last night. On the other hand, I have a couple comb-bound piano books, and they are nice, but it's easy to accidentally partially tear them out when you have to flip a page quickly with one hand. My students use a book that's staple bound, and it actually stays open nicely, but it's not thick. It has maybe forty pages total, so twenty on either side of the staple. Keeping the instruction books small may be the way to go.

I started researching public domain music and digging through my personal stockpile for potential public domain pieces. I want to keep at least some of the songs familiar to students. Hey, can anyone direct me to public domain traditional songs with religious or holiday themes that are non-Christian? I know all the Christian ones, but want to include other religions in my collections. I'm just not that familiar with music from other faiths, so your help is appreciated. *Smile*

The Star Wars concert was AWESOME! *Delight* How does John Williams compose such intricate works with no discernible meter - or parts, at times - and make it sound so... natural? The man is a genius. I wanted to be in the choir... or playing the pianos, all three of them... or directing... or composing... Concerts always make me jealous.

*Writing*In progress. I wrote three introductory piano songs yesterday. I also opened up the copy of MS Publisher 2007 I bought with my laptop, which I haven't used yet. It's been years since I've used any version, but at least help menus and shortcut keys are Microsoft-familiar. I need to figure out how to compose my songs in my Finale software, and then transfer them into Publisher. I'm thinking I'll have to save the songs as images.

Dang it, I wish I had more time. This stuff is fun.

Activity! I went to Staples, Office Max, and Wal-Mart to compare book binding equipment options, and then I looked up more ideas online to see what would be cheapest and easiest. They make long-reach staplers that might be cheaper to do than the comb-style bindings I was originally considering.

*Check*Goal met. I worked on this while teaching lessons, which always seems like the appropriate time. I compiled some research about existing methods that work. I notice that children's books and adult books teach the content backwards from each other, which I find interesting. I wonder if that's based on educational research, or if it's just an arbitrary order that the publisher chose.

I also wrote a few articles, played some guitar, and ate a lot of food.
*Up* my idea of a "vacation" *Up*
