The Good Life.
I am a professional musician  , worship leader  , small business owner  , songwriter  , aspiring author   and freelance nonfiction writer   with a chemical engineering degree  .

But that's just my resume.

My profile of qualifications is only one of the ways in which I am unique. Here I chronicle my personal and professional goals and my efforts to achieve them. Occasionally I fail. Mostly, I take daily baby steps toward all my long-term goals. Much like the stories I pen, the songs I compose, and the businesses I run, I am always a work in progress.

In progress. When Keith and I are tired and cranky, my mantra is: Three more months... three more months... That means, three more months until I can either leave, or start taking vacation days every week until I run out, and THEN leave. Either way, we'll both get more sleep in January. Well, it occurred to me today: Not only is it technically two and a half months, but I could theoretically leave as soon as November 15th and still get my bonus for the year. After two years of planning my resignation, it could be as early as a month away! {e:awe} I'll probably still stick it out through March, but DAMN. ONE MONTH. This gives me newfound energy to make it to March. Maybe.

I need a big chunk of time to do this. We tentatively have it planned for this Sunday. I might go ahead and get started on my next goal in the meantime, which is to organize Keith's garage. I've already organized the bedroom, basement, laundry room, bath, and linen closet. We suddenly have all kinds of empty space. *Thumbsup* Keith and I are a great match: He's anal about cleanliness, and I'm anal about organization. Together, we will keep an immaculate house! *Delight*

5:30pm Red Lobster. (9,999,9999)

I tried to be good at Red Lobster. I ordered grilled trout with double broccoli and balsamic vinagrette on the side of my salad. Admittedly, I ordered stuffed mushrooms, of which I ate two, and I also ate two biscuits. Still, all things considered, not bad.

Then the waitress comes back from the kitchen and says, "I'm so sorry, but we just ran out of trout." *Angry* So what do I do? I order the grilled lobster, shrimp, and scallops plate and dip every damn piece in drawn butter.

At least I still got double broccoli and dressing on the side. *Pthb* We shall see what tomorrow brings.

Kids. They are a needy people! I've been getting Keith's kids ready and out the door for school every day, since I'm home anyway. It takes them four times as long to do anything as it would take me to do, and they need help every step of the way. Also, everything is a tragedy. Stay-at-home moms, I bow to you. *Bigsmile*

It's kind of a joke between the family. Anytime one of the children yells, "Daaaaaaaaddy!" from the bedroom, I always yell back, "They are a needy people!" Once over vacation, I said to Abby, "Have I mentioned that, 'They are a needy people!'?" She replied: "Like twenty times!" After Keith and I had a laugh over that, she quipped, "...and that was just TODAY!" That had us rolling. For the rest of the week, every time I yelled the phrase, the kids would call back the running count for the day of how many times I had said it. "Seven!" "Eight!" "Nine!"

Kids are needy, but they sure are fun.

I'm done advertising... WE START TOMORROW! *Delight* Y'all ready?

Launch one new Potbelly song per week.
Pending, at least for Easton. I played a couple oldies yesterday at Gahanna that I'm fairly certain I've never played in that store before. Easton is getting tired of my lineup, though. Mike, the full-time sandwich guy, asked when I was gonna break out some new music. *Blush*

Yesterday at Potbelly, I had two dramatic swings in my Abbott-leaving decision.

First, a security guy walked in with cash register money, and he gave me a thumbs-up, saying, "Keep that up. I used to do that forty years ago." I thought, wow. I need to stay at Abbott. How can I choose music as a career? I won't be able to play and sing like this forever, and what happens when I lose the ability?

But then, an hour later, a woman came in alone. According to the manager, she complimented me at the sandwich counter. Then she sat right in front of me, clearly listening, and at one point, I could see that she was trying to control tears. When she finished eating, she walked up to me, dropped a tip in my box, and asked if I play in any bars. I told her, "Not yet, but I'm trying to get into a couple." She replied, "I'd love to drink a beer and listen to you." *Heart* Then I thought, how did I ever doubt my decision to leave Abbott and do this for a living?? *Shock* THIS is why I do it. So I gave her a business card and directed her to my WordPress blog for my schedule.

Speaking of that WordPress blog...

In progress! ...with decision firmly in place. I'm leaning more toward Easter. Or, you know, my original date of December. *Bigsmile* Keith and I will just have to live in his house for awhile, or decrease our house-hunting budget.

December is looking desirable again, because my opportunity to move to day shift evaporated yesterday. *Frown* I'm so tired all the time, and I don't see enough of my man.

On a related note, my man is the most wonderful man in the world. *Smile* It turns out that I can tell him anything. Everyone should have that in a partner.

Based on my long-term goals, which are outlined below, I don't see how I have time to start a new novel project. In fact, I'm not sure professional writing is in the plan at all. I may continue to do small, easy, freelance projects for the likes of Textbroker and Helium, and I'll always write songs, but I don't see myself managing a portfolio full of submissions, nor do I see any huge, long-term writing projects in my future.

No NaNo for me this year.

I have too many other irons in the fire, and they all circle around my first love: Music.

Long-Term Goals:

1. Leave Abbott
-Save enough for a house down payment
-Save enough for business down payment
-Line up replacement work

2. Sell house and move in with Keith
-Prep house
-List house
-Sell house

3. Sell Keith's house and buy a bigger house
-Save enough for a house down payment
-Stay at Abbott to qualify for financing
-Prep Keith's house
-List Keith's house
-Sell Keith's house

4. Start a music studio business
-Save enough for business down payment
-Write a business plan
-Find a location
-Obtain financing (?)

5. Pick up more regular gigs
-Leave Abbott or switch to day shift
-Record a professional CD
-Scope out potential venues or hire a promotions manager
-Distribute CDs and business cards

In progress. I'm at my house waiting on the piano mover as we speak... but if I don't hear from them in five minutes, I swear I'm gonna reschedule. What part of "I need to leave for work at 11:00" do these people not understand? I said MULTIPLE TIMES... if I need to wait a couple weeks to guarantee they'll get here early, FINE. I'm not in a hurry. Where the hell are they? *kicks*

Since I'm here, I sponge painted a wall to touch it up, and I sprayed Kilz Upshot on my ceiling... I'm thinking it's the wrong color. *Pthb* And I did some yard work.

...normally I measure out a portion, but Keith's son Blaine poured himself a big bowl, and then decided he didn't like the fact that he could only fit one mini-wheat at a time on his spoon. Heh. So I ate it. I have no idea how much it was, but probably about double a normal serving.

Kids. *Pthb*
