30-Day Blogging Challenge August 2016.

August 13th - Verona, the setting of Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' - Day tripping from Venice

I managed to get a good sleep last night despite someone snoring across the room.... but hey, I can sleep through anything once I'm out. Lyn's a Witchy Woman had us leaving at 8:00 am so we had plenty of time to make it to our departure point - Piazzale Roma, Venice, Italy. Today was an air conditioned mini bus. We met up at 8:45 AM and left on time at 9:00 AM. All very efficient. Lyn mentioned the trip would be a lot of walking for approximately 9 hours and we'd come back on a train to the Venice Train Station Santa Lucia. Sounded good to me.

I made sure to take my camera, good walking shoes and socks ('cause nobody wants blisters), my sketchbook and a few pens and pencils, sunblock and my hat,of course. I hate wearing a hat, but I refused to be slowed down by sunstroke.

We were off to Verona, the setting of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet,’. Another day to soak up the city’s history, architecture and culture as we checked out castles, churches, frescoes, Gothic landmarks, charming piazzas and Verona’s renowned amphitheater. It was amazing to see the sights related to Romeo and Juliet - I wonder if Shakespeare himself visited here to get the feel of the place as he was writing? We were able to skip the line at the ancient Roman amphitheater, pass by the Verona Duomo and the famed Juliet balcony. We walked along the river past Casa di Romeo.

We stopped to take photos at Colle di San Pietro. The views were amazing! Our guide told us why he thought it was the perfect setting for the world’s greatest romance. We started our tour from the foot of a castle overlooking the town. There were towering spires, strong castle walls, and the river that hugs its curves. Then we walked down into the city. Along the way we stopped off for a skip the line visit to the ancient Roman amphitheatre. It is a 1st century marvel that is one of the greatest amphitheatres in Italy and is also still among the top opera venues in the world. We got to see the Verona Duomo from the outside, and popped into the beautiful Basilica of Saint Anastasia.

Then it was on to the "home of Shakespeare’s Juliet, where, from the outside, you gaze up at the famed balcony where Romeo is said to have done his wooing. There is also a statue of Juliet herself whose breast you can rub for good luck - just make sure Romeo’s not around."

From there we went into the historic center to uncover the real story of the city that served as the colorful backdrop for Shakespeare’s classic. We saw gorgeous plazas, Piazza Bra and Piazza delle Erbe to see the Palazzo Maffei, the Palazzo Barbieri (Town Hall) and the famous Mazzanti Houses whose facades are decorated with beautiful 16th-century frescoes. We also stopped by the Piazza Dante to pay our respects at the statue of Italy’s most famous writer.

At lunch I sampled the risotto and polenta, but I steered clear of the donkey meat!

Following lunch we reconvened and walked along the river past the Casa di Romeo and two very famous arches, the ancient Roman gates of Porta Borsari and the Arco della Costa. We learned about one of most bizarre local legends ever (it involves a pure-hearted person and a dangling whale bone).

We payed our respects at the Scaligeri family tombs - incredible examples of gothic architecture that hold the remains of one of Verona’s most important families. We gazed up at Lamberti tower, and sauntered over the Castelvecchio bridge.

Lyn decided we would have dinner in Verona before taking the train back to Venice. She had us booked into the Ristorante Enoteca Cangrande. After a day of walking and taking in the sights I was only too happy to collapse in a chair and sip some local wine. The meal, as any Itallian meal goes, was fabulous and so was the company.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g187871-d1639024-Reviews-Ristorant...

When we arrive back at our abode, Lyn strongly suggests getting packed up this evening as we are leaving early in the morning. I decide I might as well take my shower tonight as well, so that is one less thing I have to worry about it the morning.

Tomorrow we have a 5 hour train hour ride to Vienna. We're taking bag lunches so we can begin our day once we leave our stuff at the next hotel.

Border for my personal use.

Blog City – Day 888

What are your plans for the weekend? Do you do more writing on weekends or weekdays?

Beyond my blogging for my virtual trip through Europe, I am planning to head out to Fergus to the Scottish Highland Games. I hope to see Diana Gabaldon (author of the Outlander series) and hear Albannach play - not your typical pipe music! I heard them last year when I was there and they drew me in....

http://www.albannachmusic.com/
http://www.albannachmusic.com/music/runs-in-the-blood/

I am also going to make sure I make it to the Clan Henderson this year - my original name.

As for writing... in the summer I am able to write everyday. During the school year, must depends on my supply teaching. I am often too tired in the evening to write much so the weekends get more of my time then. I prefer morning writing to afternoon or evening.

30-Day Blogging Challenge August 2016.

August 12th Venice
"Venice, capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region, is built on more than 100 small islands in a marshy lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. Its stone palaces seemingly rise out of the water. There are no cars or roadways, just canals and boats. The Grand Canal snakes through the city, which is filled with innumerable narrow, mazelike alleys and small squares."

We pulled into Venice around 10 in the morning. More blue skies and warm weather. These virtual days are so pleasant - perfect summer days -- with no humidity! (In reality it is 32 degrees Celsius with a humidex of 40!)
We made it to our lodging - AWA Apartments San Marco. We have 5 apartments with 5 or 6 of us per room... that is not a bad thing... especially if we are not here much. And this is Venice, baby! Time to get out and explore!

http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/AWA-Venice-Apartments-San-Marco/Ven...

Lyn's a Witchy Woman had us on a two hour tour scheduled this morning, leaving us free to explore on our own this afternoon after lunch. We hooked back up for our dinner date.

So ready for a day of anything and everything we headed off to St. Marks Basilica and Doge's Palace. We met our knowledgeable guide at St.Mark’s Square and he lead us to the "majestic Doge’s Palace, where the Doge and his Council controlled the fate of a 1,000-year republic." We discovered the lavish Apartments with their splendidly decorated rooms and the masterpieces of famous artists, such as Titian, Veronese and Tintoretto. We admired the rich details of the Giants’ Staircase and the Golden Staircase, the Opera Museum, the Institutional Rooms and other extraordinary treasures. We crossed the famous Bridge of Sighs and experienced the prisoners’ anguish before reaching the notorious Venetian prison, where the well-known Giacomo Casanova and many others were imprisoned. We walked through the ornately-decorated halls of the Doge's Palace and found ourselves imagining a life during that Venetian golden age. How crazy is that?!

Then we headed across to see one of the world’s most majestic and imposing cathedral. The Basilica is a great artwork of immeasurable value. While inside the cathedral, we marveled at the major altar of St. Mark’s Cathedral and the Golden Pall, an exquisite example of Byzantine art with thousands of gems and precious stones, considered one of the most valuable objects in the world.

It was awe inspiring as we got to see the golden mosaics that adorn the interior of St. Mark's Basilica. For these few hours we got to immerse ourselves in the history of Venice through two of its most important buildings.

https://www.viator.com/tours/Venice/Skip-The-Line-St-Marks-Basilica-and-Doges-Pa...

Once the tours were over, I decided to explore. The many of the rest stopped for lunch, but I was not yet ready to eat.... to eager to get on with ambling through as much of Venice as my body could take.

https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Venice,+Italy/@45.405375,12.3116744,12z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x477eb1daf1d63d89:0x7ba3c6f0bd92102f!8m2!3d45.4408474!4d12.3155151

On my travels I came across a lovely English bookshop.... with cats that roam around.... and a boat in the shop.... Librera acqua alta - library of high water. Apparently the bookshop gets flooded every year... but it just floats!

http://www.cookiesound.com/2013/12/the-most-interesting-bookshop-in-the-world-li...

Hey, I needed a postcard to mail to myself and what better place to find it. I was not interested in the regular touristy things... and this pushed my buttons. I was pleased to find several other bookshops in the area as well. I also bought a map as a keepsake.

I also wandered around Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo. Really quite a lovely area.

https://www.google.ca/maps/uv?hl=en&pb=!1s0x477eae2400000075%3A0x16f1a9e6aa2ebe4b!2m5!2m2!1i80!2i80!3m1!2i100!3m1!7e115!4shttps%3A%2F%2Fssl.panoramio.com%2Fphoto%2F65386204!5s%20-%20Google%20Search&imagekey=!1e4!2s61260887

I found a lovely cafe to enjoy some very good coffee and sample some wonderful food. Afterward I wandered the shops close by... I found a really nice leather backpack I could not resist.

I made it back to our rooms in time to get ready for dinner. Dinner was at seven thirty and Lyn's a Witchy Woman had us going on a Gondola and Serenade with dinner to follow. Apparently I got on the boat with Fivesixer and got to hear his operatic performance. Heavens to murgatroid! What a sound! My ears were ringing for quite some time.

The traditional gondola boat ride was for a 35-minutes through the Grand Canal and some of the city’s smaller waterways. While onboard musicians provide a passionate soundtrack of Italian ballads, with the occasional Norb accompaniment. We had a blast. We got to savor an authentic Venetian meal at the top-rated Hostaria Ai Coristi Restaurant. I have to admit I ate way too much!

30-Day Blogging Challenge August 2016.

August 11 - Italy, in all its beauty!
I have to laugh at some of the ladies who are struggling with the 7 am start time on this tour. Even I was a little groggy to start this morning, but I was so excited about the day, I didn't mind being up with the birds. We grabbed a quick breakfast, making sure to sample several strong cups of the coffee. Then we headed off for a full day (13 hour) adventure! I had my swimsuit, my sunblock (already on after my shower), my hat and good walking shoes (with socks). My camera was charged and ready to go.... and I had enough funds for a day of shopping if we got a chance.

Today we were exploring the Italian Riviera - the beautiful Cinque Terre from Florence.
"The Cinque Terre is one of Italy’s most captivating landscapes. Translated as ‘five lands,’ the region is made up of five unique fishing villages that line the Italian Riviera." There are no cars!
We started in central Florence at the Santa Maria Novella train station without much time to spare. Some of us were dragging the un-morning people and plying them with morsels to get them moving. The sights revived them. We met our guide and hopped aboard an awaiting coach to head out toward the seashore. The first stop was in the southernmost village of Riomaggiore, dating back to 13th century. it is beloved for its local wine and incomparable scenery, admire the pastel-colored buildings as you follow your guide along the cobblestone streets.

https://www.google.ca/search?q=Riomaggiore&rlz=1C1KAFB_enCA573CA573&espv=2&biw=1...

https://www.google.ca/search?q=Riomaggiore&rlz=1C1KAFB_enCA573CA573&espv=2&biw=1...

Some of us took the Via Amora. A twenty minute walk to the next village. It is the tiny village of Manarola next. It is home to medieval relics and a plethora of grapevines. We strolled around the harbor and took snapshots of the beautiful, bright buildings that cling to the cliff.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mol7qTI21mc

The ramps were filled with sunbathers! Not a boat in the water!
The weather is grand so we hopped aboard a boat to travel to Monterosso.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7YboqbWHlM

I opted to eat as I go, stopping to sample and savour the local faire and mingle with the residents. Some of the group came along and we had a marvelous time. I made sure to try the homemade ravioli with pesto sauce... oh to die for.... and the wine was wonderful as well. Much better than my uncle's attempts back home (my aunt married an Italian 44 years ago). He is my favourite uncle. I make sure I buy some anchovies to send home for him... and him alone! I also buy some local honey and a few lemons.

This is the best beach in the area, so of course I had to get on my suit and hit the water. Floating and swimming around in the sea soothed my walking toes and feet and legs... it was a wonderful break from all the walking. I think I saw Fivesixer splashing around in the waves as well.

I also made sure to buy some souvenirs - I bought my mother an apron. A t-shirt for me. I will have to mail my stuff home soon as I dare not want to carry it all over Europe. I made sure to buy some bottled water before the next part of our adventure.

Next, we hiked from there to Vernazza along a very cool pathway! It took 2 hours. The perfect nature hike. A few people were a little nervous of the heights and the cliff edges, but we moved slow and steady, keeping together so we didn't lose anyone.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0l1CzIydYc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baRJEOFQnYM

We made our final stop in Vernazza, bordered by terraced olive groves that are said to produce some of the finest olive oil in Italy. We explored the bustling square and winding streets at our leisure. I made sure to take the trail up to see the scenic view of the village. Lots of friendly cats to pet... made it so I did not mis my cats at home so much. The children were fun to watch as well... I managed to get in on one of the soccer games along the beach. Such fun! It was almost sad to have to return to to Florence, but my feet were about ready for time off.

http://www.parks.it/parco.nazionale.cinque.terre/Eindex.php

Dinner was up to us. I felt I had snacked and indulged all day... a little here, a little there, but hey, who can pass us food in Italy! Lyn recommended the Panini Toscani and I was curious to see why the place had such a line. I was happy to learn that the owner does a mini cheese and meat tasting with each guest and you can choose what goes into your sandwich. I loved this idea. He also gave us a small amount of information about each one's origin and how that make them. The sandwich was delicioso! I indulged in a little local vino as well... and my feet were so happy about that.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g187895-Florence_Tuscany.html

I was so happily tired by the time I finished dinner, I strolled back to our guesthouse, took a short swim and then collapsed for the night. Tomorrow we have to be on the train at 8 am, for a two hour ride to Venice!

30-Day Blogging Challenge August 2016.

August 10th Hello Italy
I must say, we have the best travel organizer. I applaud you Lyn's a Witchy Woman !
Florence. The heart of Tuscany. What better place can we be... We are booked into the Bassettl Guesthouse.
http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Bassetto-Guesthouse/Florence/744?da...
Can you believe this place... it is like I have gone to heaven... surrounded by all this quaintness... and Tuscany. One of my favourite movies is Under A Tuscan Sun - and yes, I have read the book as well.
It is located in Certaldo, in the belly button of Tuscany, a beautiful region of vineyards, olive groves and medieval towns. This is the place where you will find a true taste of Tuscany and the 'bella vita' in an authentic XIVth century setting. My heart does a flutter.
Lyn has us bringing Tuscany country living to the backpacking world. This is indead a relaxing break from the busy cities. At Bassetto, I am able to regather my thoughts while I relax next to our pool and swing some time away in the hammock with a glass of wine in hand. Before bed I took a walk through the garden while being surrounded by fireflies. Imagine a dinner in their wine cellar.
'Bassetto Guesthouse was formerly a convent of Benedictine monks that was always open to pilgrims passing through. In 1998, our family opened Bassetto Guesthouse again to travelers with the same notion of hospitality as the monks centuries ago. We wanted our guesthouse to be unique in terms of setting and location, a place you would want to return to and somewhere to relax from city life.'
I am bunking in with a few of the ladies in one of the dorm style rooms. The kitchens and common areas are sweet and inviting.
We got to explore landscapes sculpted by sunflowers, rolling hills and farms on foot and on a horse.
The guesthouse organizes a fresh pasta cooking class with a local chef and Lyn had signed us up. Yummy. It was rather fun and many of my travelling friends were only to happy to play with their food.... flour was everywhere! I quite enjoyed myself.

After the pasta making class and a good clean up, we set off to see where Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, Foscolo, Gentile and Rossini are buried at the Basilica of Santa Croce and see the museum where Michelangelo's David resides. This draws me.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basilica_of_Santa_Croce,_Florence

http://www.accademia.org/

After a light lunch we head over to the Boboli Gardens. this place was inspiring! Such beauty!
The spider's lane.... I love this! I did not see any spiders.
http://www.museumsinflorence.com/musei/boboli_garden.html
Cyprus lane.... Oh my, how can you not just love this place!
http://www.museumsinflorence.com/musei/boboli_garden.html

http://www.museumsinflorence.com/musei/boboli_garden.html

We took a picnic dinner with us on a late afternoon / early evening horseback adventure. We got to see the city's beauty at sunset from an incredible advantage point.

The day was dreamy and I found myself happy to crawl into bed. I was asleep before my head even touched the pillow. Tomorrow, Lyn tells us will be another busy day. I can hardly wait.

August 9th – Monaco continues...

I have breakfast with the whole gang at the hotel before they head off to see Prince Rainer’s Antique Car collection. This is so not my cup of tea, so I head back up to my room and get ready for the pool. A little rooftop swimming pool is calling my name and that holds my interest way more than any Monaco sightseeing tours.

I rejoin the group when they return for lunch. Lyn's a Witchy Woman says to eat a light lunch, but my swim has worked up my appetite and we are planning on a bike tour in Nice - so I make sure I eat a good, lunch. We get to take a helicopter ride to Nice!!! Wow. Now that sparks my excitement levels.

I have never been in a helicopter before and the experience is amazing! The views are soooo wonderful and the ride flips my stomach in ways on a roller coaster can - and that is a good thing!

https://www.viator.com/tours/Nice/Scenic-Helicopter-Tour-from-Nice/d478-5581HELI...

After the helicopter ride I find traveling energy has been revived.... and now we are in Nice and I cannot wait to get on my bike and see what this city has to offer.

https://www.viator.com/tours/Nice/Nice-City-Bike-Tour/d478-5294NICE
We get to discover the best parts of the Côte d'Azur capital during the Nice 3 hour bike tour with a local guide. We cycle through the picture-perfect city past charming city squares, grand boulevards and sandy beaches. We see the city's famous Belle Époque architecture, Baroque churches, trendy bars and busy cafes. This is more my style. With our knowledgeable guide and a bike that is a joy to ride, we see parts of Nice that most people miss... or so I'm told. We see Promenade des Anglais, Hotel Negresco, Place Massena, Nice Old Town and Market, Place Garibaldi, and the port. The guide tells us interesting facts and stories about each attraction. It was a day to discover Nice’s hidden spots, little alleys and unique atmosphere. I did not want to leave.

Read more about Nice City Bike Tour - Nice | Viator at: https://www.viator.com/tours/Nice/Nice-City-Bike-Tour/d478-5294NICE?pub=vcps

The helicopter pilot is going to return us in time for happy hour at the Brasserie de Monaco.I am almost sad to leave Nice.

http://www.brasseriedemonaco.com/
Located down on the harbour, this cool little spot serves homebrewed organic beers and if you get there between 5pm and 8pm, you can also enjoy 50% off the price! Yep that’s 2 euro for a half-pint and 3 euro 50 cents for a pint! I have a feeling many of us drank way more than we should have... but it was rolling fun. The Red fruits beer was quite good... for a beer. I manage to swipe a top from one of the beers, since I can't peel a label off as a souvenir.

Dinner is at Il Terrazzino a mix of Italian and Mediterranean at 8:30 pm
https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g190409-d1579959-Reviews-Il_Terraz...
It is quaint and colourful. The gande buffet style for the appetizers was a lovely way to try a variety of things. I sampled quite a few... particularly the cheese and tomatoes.
https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Restaurant_Review-g190409-d1579959-Reviews-Il_Terrazz...
We see Novak Djokovic with his wife! I am so happy to be enjoying the same space.... I restrain myself from asking for an autograph, but I do smile over and raise my glass when they glance our way.

Tomorrow we leave for Florence Italy. We get the 8 am train for a 2 hour ride... I can hardly wait!

Border for my personal use.

Blog City – Day 884

Prompt: What is inspiration to you? Aside from writing from prompts, is inspiration something you run into while reading or living your day-to-day life, or do you have a mystical attitude about it as if it comes from dreams or during a trance-like state?

Inspiration can strike at any time. I think it is just important to stay open to the world around you... your experience. Something draws you, captures your interest.... go with it. I wouldn't say it is mystical in nature... though I have gotten ideas from dreams, I would say day-to-day experience is far more accessible - and that includes what you are reading and watching on TV and in the movies.

Watching people, eavesdropping on conversations... those are bountiful avenues for getting ideas. Surfing the internet.... looking at photographs. Considering the 'what ifs' of a situation - those all play into what captures your interest, your imagination and inspires you to take to the page.

30-Day Blogging Challenge August 2016.

August 8th -- Monaco

Lyn's a Witchy Woman has booked us into more luxury at the Fairmont Monte Carlo..
http://www.fairmont.com/monte-carlo/

Monaco.... hmmm. Of all the places. This one seems daunting... I definitely feel out of place here. I am not rich and famous..... and everything seems over the top. I did a little of my own research and decided to go to the exotic garden instead of the Japanese Gardens. I managed to drag a few of the ladies with me.... the defectors in us.... you know who you are!!!
https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Attraction_Review-g190407-d195274-Reviews-Exotic_Gard...
The fabulous gardens and the caves were definitely great to see. It took about an hour or so to wander the gardens and another hour or so to walk the caves. The place was amazing and the views of Monaco spectacular.

We caught up with everyone at the Oceanographic Museum
https://www.viator.com/Monaco-attractions/Oceanographic-Museum-Musee-Oceanograph...
This was a cool place.

We continued on to the zoo. It's unusual because it is a vertical zoo going up the side of a mountain where the Prince's Castle sits at the top. The view of the city is incredible as you walk and see the different exotic animals accumulated.

As for the Prince’s Palace.... again.... not so intrigued and besides I was drawn to the beach. I was done with the sightseeing for the day. I wanted to just relaxed and take in that wonderful Mediterranean sand, sun and sea.

Monaco is tiny measuring 2 miles long and little over half a mile wide, so you can certainly walk around it in half a day! That means you won’t be spending any money on cab rides and you get your exercise for the day. Monaco is built on a steep hill but there are all these crazy public elevators you can take to get up and down. It’s a weird place, let me tell you but a long of fun.

Those of us going to the beach grabbed some lunch then headed back to the hotel to change and go. The rest were talking about going shopping. There was.buzz about seeing some celebrities.

There is a rooftop swimming pool with amazing views if you're not in shopping all the high end shops.

Dinner was at La Note Bleue at 7:30 pm. It was a restaurant and piano bar where we were able kick back and relax. Listening to everyone's tale of the day was fascinating. Afterward a few of us walked along the beach for a glorious sunset.
https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g190409-d2292056-Reviews-La_Note_B...

I was not quite ready to settle in for the night so I talked a few of the group into tagging along with me to go check out Le Bar Americain
https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Attraction_Review-g190409-d2549389-Reviews-Le_Bar_Ame...
The live music got us up dancing. It was a little pricey.... I sipped my drink slowly and enjoyed the ambiance and my companions. It was a people watching paradise.

Border for my personal use.

Blog City - Day 883

Prompt: What do you think about this feeling of “I should have done better!” in any area? Can it be a positive or negative motivator in some way?

I think this feeling has a lot to do with other moods that surround it. If you did pretty well, but still see room for improvement, it will spurn you on to do even better next time, but if you failed miserably and you are feeling awful, the negativity can grow and tears can fall.
I try to stay positive most of the time, but I do have my darker moments when negativity can creep in.

Border for my personal use.

Love Louder - Amplifying My Life

I have decided as part of my blog to comment on each of Preston Smiles's ways to Love Louder. He has written an intriguing little book or 33 Ways To Amplify Your Life. The full title is Love Louder: 33 Ways To Amplify Your Life.

Day 33 –There No Elevator To Success; We All Have To Take The Stairs
"There's no substitute for hard work, we all have to roll up our sleeves and take the stairs to get to that floor we're going after."

"Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." - Roman Philosopher Seneca
Smiles goes on to add that preparation is the work we must do.... and the opportunity will find us when we are ready to work and make it happen.

Anything worth having is worth having to work for... there are always going to be setbacks and bumps along the way, but that is "nature's was of strengthening us to be ready for what it is we're working toward." During the process of working hard, you learn more about yourself.... each time you work through something you initially thought impossible, you build character, increase self-respect and solidify new habits Preston is hopeful to add. "It creates a new version of you to lean back on , knowing that anything is possible with enough faith, patience, and perseverance.

#LOVELOUDERCHALLENGE
I will work for it more than I will hope for it.

30-Day Blogging Challenge August 2016.

Aug 7th-- Montpellier - a day of free choice
It is Sunday. I let myself sleep in this morning... not too long. I grabbed a coffee and a small breakfast. I made my way to Mass at Cathedrale St-Pierre for 10:30am. I got there early to explore sure an old Gothic style church. I am not Catholic, but I am Christian.... same God, just a different 'burger joint' - as my aunt would say. The service was in French and I understood very little, but I followed what everyone else was doing and the family sitting beside me helped me along. It was quite the experience. A lovely way to start my morning.

After enjoying the church, I wandered through the Jardin des plantes de Montpellier enjoying the beauty before going for a lovely brunch at Delecto. The place was just perfect and the food wonderful. I feasted on quiche and a healthy salad. I had sure to order a huge fruit smoothie before heading off for the rest of my day.
https://www.yelp.ca/biz/delecto-montpellier

Lyn's a Witchy Woman has given us the day to do as we choose. Her recommendations were for either hiking Pic St-Loup or the zoo. I decided, given all the luscious food and drink I have been overindulging in, I needed the challenge of the hike.

Pic St-Loup is 658 meters high. It is considered one of the most beloved emblems of the city. There is low vegetation, impressive 300-meter-high cliffs, and a surrounding relief of just 150 meters, Pic St-Loup is very prominent and can be seen from just about everywhere in the Hérault department. It is, by definition, part of the lower end of Massif Central.

Because of its micro-climate and unique flora, the mountain is a protected site and houses a thriving population of prey birds. The mountain is a very popular day trip from Montpellier for both curious tourists and serious hikers; there is an old chapel, castle ruins, a hermitage, and a symbolic cross atop the mountain. Not to mention the unobstructed panoramas, which stretch all the way from the Mediterranean Sea to the south to the Cevennes Mountains to the north. The wine produced on the low slopes of Pic St-Loup is some of the most highly-regarded terroirs in the Languedoc-Roussillon region.

I take my time, making sure to take lots of water with me and some easily carried snacks. I left my sandals at the hotel and put on my running shoes and socks. I coated myself with sunblock as I have read there is not a lot of shelter on this hike. It took me 90 minutes, sometimes going up steep walks, over rocks and on small pathways through the bushes without it ever feeling like real climbing. It was exhilarating - a work out for the non sporty person I am and the view was so worth it. At the top I took a narrow pathway to the right and found stunning views of the north face which is the rock climbing part of the Pic and there are no people.

The fortress, or rather the ruins of it at the top, were quite interesting. I sat there relaxing, enjoying the view and munching the snacks. Since there is no litter anywhere, I made sure to take my garbage away with me. I contemplated how people had managed to build the fortress up here hundreds of years ago. I took lots of pictures, sketched and wrote. One of the best of days.
Going back I was lighter, but I took my time. The descent is always more of a challenge than most people think. I was not into rolling my way back down, so I picked my steps carefully.

Back at the hotel, I took a long shower and washed the dust and dirt off. Feeling refreshed, I donned another dress I had packed and headed out to find my group. I had seen glimpses of some of them over the day - even marveled at the sights with them at the top of the Pic. Now we headed to dinner.

Lyn's a Witchy Woman booked us into Leclere Cuisine D'Arrivage for 8pm. It's a small restaurant and I was amazed to hear she had booked it for us a year in advance! We are the only patrons from 8:00pm until closing.
https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g187153-d7932738-Reviews-Leclere_C...
I enjoyed a healthy meal - salad, a fish dish... then indulged in a few desserts. I was hungry after all the walking I had put in over the day.

Back at the hotel, I took a swim in the pool then crashed. I slept like a baby.

Tomorrow morning we have a short train ride that is only a couple of hours - we leave at 9:00am - for Monaco, I believe.

Day 32 –Define It Then Design It
"Loving Louder is about living life by design and not by default."

"Too many people are chasing money instead of passion; living the lives their parents or society has mapped out for them, instead of carving out their own paths and designing a life that feels good to them."

Oprah interviewed a woman this morning, Shafani Tsbary, who has written a book called The Awakened Parent.
https://drshefali.com/blog/

In it she talks about how parents put so much into pushing their kids and giving them 'advantages' at such early ages that the love and joy and freedom of childhood is curtailed. She says so much can be healed if we step back and focus on just loving and developing that bond with our children. Being supporting and encouraging and letting the child find their way.... reflects what Preston Smiles is saying.

He goes on to say that "real success, not the standardized ideal of, looks different for everyone." Smiles discovered that he was challenged to redefine success on his own terms. For him, he defines his success as "creating an impact on the world, leaving it better than I found it." It does not have to be about finite things - a certain job title, a certain amount of money.

Those who live extraordinary lives have "defined success by their terms and set out to design a life that aligned with what they truly cared about. That commitment to their heart's calling creates a path of joy, bliss, and fulfillment, no matter what it looks life to the outside world."

Shaking of the chains of social conformity is difficult.... but important.

#LOVELOUDERCHALLENGE
What is success on your terms?
Make a list and get to work on designing it.
Being a good person, being healthy, leaving the world a better place by working with children and helping them achieve their potential, writing stories and poems and blogs that entertain and encourage others.

30-Day Blogging Challenge August 2016.

Aug 6th-- Montpellier, France

Montpellier, the capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France, is 10km inland from the Mediterranean Sea. Its medieval center, the Ecusson, is home to narrow alleyways and the pedestrian-only Rue de la Loge, where shops sell antiques, crafts and upmarket fashion. The 13th-century Université de Montpellier contributes to a large student population and a cutting-edge cultural scene.

A university town, I love university towns.... we have two in the city I live in.
The train ride from Barcelona was long - 4 hours. Despite my excitement, I did manage to doze.

I am so excited about the day. eleusive4lyn gave the itinerary and I looked up the venues before going to bed... my mouth was watering just looking at the food from the Empanadas Club. I better save room for all that good food. I’ll need to walk and walk and walk to burn off all the wonderfulness of it all! Don’t know if I will be able to sleep....

Lyn's a Witchy Woman has us back on budget.
http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Hotel-Prime/Montpellier/2999?dateFr...

Our rooms at the hostel are like a hotel room. There is a pool and our rooms have their own bathroom. There is also a restaurant. I am perfectly happy with the accommodation. When the place is as grand as the hotel in Barcelona, you almost don’t want to go out, but when the accommodation is clean and neat, but simple.... I am more tempted to use it as a passing through spot. This is good, Lyn.

Today is Antigone. It s a district of Montpellier, France.
We see unusual neoclassical architecture that was designed by Spanish architect, Ricardo Bofill. Sadly, no more Gaudi. *Sad* Antigone is built on the grounds of the former Joffre Barracks. It stretches from the Polygon Shopping Centre to the River Lez. We don't take a lot of time here as our tour is soon to begin.

Lyn has us spending half the day, three and a half hours, sampling fine French wines in France’s largest wine region... just outside Montpellier. We got to learn about wine production in the Languedoc-Roussillon region and visited two elegant châteaux. There vineyards were idyllic. After discovering the different grapes, peeking into the production rooms and learning about the aging process, we got to indulge in an expert-led tasting of red, white and rosé wines. I am not a big drinker, but I thoroughly enjoyed this experience. The wine really was quite good.

Read more about Small-Group Half-Day Châteaux of Montpellier Wine Tour - Montpellier | Viator at: https://www.viator.com/tours/Montpellier/Small-Group-Half-Day-Chateaux-of-Montpe...

The day was very relaxed. After days of going all out on the sightseeing, I was happy to chill and sit back and enjoy my travel companions. We have a great group this year.... I love the diversity of our ages and backgrounds. We each bring something special to the experience and I am gratified to be part of the group. Nobody held my defection from yesterday's dinner as anything bad... in fact many said they would have liked to have gone... to see the light show. My pictures were a real draw.

We had two hours before dinner, so I decided to explore. Needing a little stretching I wandered into Sama yoga to see if I could get in on a class. They were a friendly, accommodating bunch of people and smiled at my muddled French - luckily, I was saved and they could speak English. After that session, I ambled through some beautiful parks and found an English bookshop!
http://lebookshop.jimdo.com/
A English bookshop! How absolutely devine!
"Located in the historic center of Montpellier, we welcome you to visit our English-specialized bookshop to see our wide collection of English and German books, as well as taste our delicious pastries and drinks on our terrace." Just Perfect! "Discover a friendly place that allows you to buy English VO books, accompanied by delicious tea, coffee, fruit juice, cupcakes, scones, brownies, and more. We have a selection of magazines and used books you may read if you would like to read something when you stop in for a snack. This international meeting area has wifi, a shaded patio, and plenty of seating space. If you choose to participate in our activities, you will improve your language skills and meet interesting people. We hope to welcome you soon to our store!"
Can you say Heaven!!!! I restrained my buying, but I may go back if time permits - though they are closed on Sunday. I am sure there will be others to join me.

Having found this little gem, I stayed until the seven o'clock close, then had to rustle to find my way back to meet up with the group for dinner.

Dinner was a fabulous surprise. The food was to die for. I don't know where Lyn found this place, but it was perfect. I loved the quaint atmosphere. Imagine eating Central American/Latin food while in France. The Empanadas Club. Pockets of deliciouness.... and the desserts. Oh my goodness... I had 2! I am going to have to do more than yoga tomorrow.

I was revved from the day's adventures and certainly not ready to return to my bed... so I ventured out with some of the group for a bit of nightlife. We went to the Games Taverne. This is very similar to something we have around my city - I love this concept.... being able to play board games and enjoy such with wonderful libations and food. I got to play Blitz. I am so not good at it, but the laughter it generates is worth my ineptitude. It is a fast paced game with two players calling out a word to match the theme of the other person's card. Tic Talk was also a fun word game to play. It was into the wee hours before we ambled toward home. Our laughter echoed in the street.

By the time I found my bed, I dropped into it and slept well. So glad the next day was not an early one.
Hope you find some awesome photo moments! Tell us about a photo bomb moment you had today!
Lyn wanted a photobomb.... so I found this one. This could happen!

Blog City – Day 881

The Olympics began August 5th. Did you watch the pageantry and the presentation of the athletes? What did you think? Which country caught your attention the most? What sport do you enjoy most? Which do you like better the Summer or the Winter events?

I watched some of the opening ceremonies. As always, it was quite dramatic and the statement made clear. I love the idea of each athlete planting a seed... starting a forest of universal love... coming together in a way that honours Mother Earth.
I am rooting for Canada, of course. I love our red and whites. I am a proud Canadian. Seeing all the happy faces of all the athletes was moving. Really impressive.
I am more partial to the Winter Olympics, but the summer ones are interesting as well. As for a favourite sport.... not sure.... diving and gymnastics I suppose.

Day 31 – When Nature Calls Go Outside To Play
"There is nothing like being in the palm of nature to remind us how vast, powerful, and majestic our planet is."

I have to agree with that sentiment. God is a creative God.... you can see it in every blade of grass, every hue of the sky. The smells, the tastes, the sights, the feel, the sounds.... all there to kiss your senses. There is nothing overwhelming about nature. It is soothing and revitalizing.... like being grounded in the present, away from the chaos of human cultivation and urbanization. I am able to re-center myself and listen to my inner voice as it breathes in a sigh of relief. "There is something about connecting with nature that fuels creativity and boosts vitality of life." I like to think of it as the hand of God... His presence in everything around me. "Nature will always be the best show on earth." I so agree.

The best things in life are from nature... sitting on a log in a sun dappled forest, listening to birdsong as the breeze dries the sweat from your brow. Eating a juicy peach picked fresh from the orchard. The scent of wild flowers mingled in the breeze. Nature is not silent.... it has its own rhythm and cacophony of sounds that is music to my soul. "We all need time in nature, time to be recharged by the trees, baptized by the seas, suffused by the fragrance of flowers, and reenergized by the air."

"Nature has a way of reminding us how small we really are and yet how we are a piece of the larger whole... our being calls to be surrounded by it." To love louder, Preston says you must "connect back to the source and breathing in all its beauty."

#LOVELOUDERCHALLENGE
Go outside!
"Get a minimum of three times a week to experience the beauty of our spinning blue dot called Earth."

30-Day Blogging Challenge August 2016.

Aug 5th - Barcelona - Today you have fielder's choice:
Knowing we weren't planning on leaving early this morning, some of the ladies and I decided to take in some of the nightlife. I was still high on happiness fumes and the dancing. I was not ready for my bed. This dress was just too beautiful to waste - being hung up too early... so... we explored.

We found a place called Marmalade. It is known for its extensive cocktail selection so we decided to try a few and watch the people. I was enticed into a game of pool - though I don't really play the game, the guys we met were more than happy to help us learn. It is all in good fun. We enjoy a little bite sharing from each other's plates and didn't leave until almost close - 2:30 in the morning. We headed back to the hotel.
'This stunning bar is split into four different areas, all decorated with beautiful sofas, copper clad antique walls and a famous chrome art déco bar. It has a luxurious experience with a warm and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Locals and tourists alike flock here to play billiard and enjoy budget cocktails all night long.'

http://www.marmaladebarcelona.com/?lang=en

So today we were free to do as we pleased. Lyn suggested Port Aventura a huge theme park - and I love those.... but I was not up for rollercoasters today. She also suggested a nude beach - but I don't think so... though I would be tempted to go tuck my toes into the Mediterranean Sea to say that I have.... Instead, I decided... on another day on the on and off scenic bus. I managed to get a little walk on the beach and time to sink my toes in the water... in fact, I put my swim suit on underneath my clothes and took a change of clothes to put on later... before I did that I went to get a closer, more personal look at the Sagrada Familia and the Picasso Museum. The others had raved about their visits that I figured I would indulge myself,

"The Sagrada Família is Antoni Gaudí's best-known work and has become an undisputed symbol of Barcelona. This unique modern temple has been under construction since 1882, and is expected to be completed by 2026." How amazing is that!

The Piccasso Museum was worth the trip...
http://courtyard.museupicassobcn.org/virtual-tour

I made it to the Barceloneta beach for a quick dip after a day of sightseeing. It is the oldest and most traditional of all the beaches.

I know it may seem a little anti-social, but I decided not to go on the small group Montserrat Tour.... it was to leave at 3 o'clock and I did not want to rush off from all the bounty in Barcelona. Instead, I took my notebook and found a quaint spot to have my own dinner and watch the people.... it was relaxing after a day of busy sightseeing and beach basking.

Later I made my way up to see the Fuentes de Montjuich... a stunning light and water show. It was breathtaking. Definitely worth seeing. I stay until the end - 11 o'clock, then head back for some sleep. Tomorrow will be an early morning, We are to catch a 7 am train.... to Montpelier, France. It is a 4 hour train trip, but I doubt I will sleep much not wanting to see the sights.

Border for my personal use.

Day 30 – Childlike, Not Childish: Feed Your Inner Child
"play is an essential element in living a fulfilled and joyful life. But somewhere in the journey toward becoming an adult we lose our playfulness, and with it we lose a sense of vitality." - and I would add, wonder.

"Life is not as serious as we make it out to be..." I agree with Preston Smiles, when he says there is a "bright-eyed, bushy tailed innocent love nugget in all of us, wanting to connect to that innate freedom through play."

We need to enjoy life to the best of our ability. Do something fun for your inner child.

30 Day Blogging Challenge

30-Day Blogging Challenge August 2016.

Aug 4th --- Barcelona, Spain
I was up and excited this morning. I know I said I am not much of a morning person, but anything like new adventures will get me up... and that coffee is to die for.... I need another cup, or three - though I worried about the three hour train ride.... I was glad there were toilets on that train. We got on the train at 7:00am. I was still full from the continental breakfast - it hit the spot. I live for pastries! And Churros are my favourite! I lost count of how many I ate! They are soooo great with coffee.

Our hotel is Ohhhh Myyyyy Goooodnessss! Lyn's a Witchy Woman you have outdone yourself! (I swear I stared at that video almost drooling) I am tempted not to leave the hotel - the swimming, the feast of bounty - oh my, but I knew if it is as lovely here as the sights of Barcelona from the balcony.... I couldn't wait to start the tour!

http://www.grandmarinahotel.com/en/hotel.html?id_referer=ADWORDS&gclid=COb-s...

This city is gorgeous! There is a theme here - one of waves - from the beach to the cobblestones in La Ramblas. The architecture even hold the curve sublime. I fear I won't be able to see everything. I thought Madrid was lovely, but this city is amazing!
The City Sightseeing hop-on hop-off tour is the best! I am hoping we are here two days! I may have to get a second camera memory card.
Here's my map:

Thought this was interesting as well, things not to do:
http://www.destinationtips.com/destinations/17-things-you-should-not-do-in-barce...

The Gothic Quarter drew me....
It is the centre of the old city of Barcelona. It stretches from La Rambla to Via Laietana, and from the Mediterranean seafront to Ronda de Sant Pere. It is a part of Ciutat Vella district.
Three of the best coffee shops are in this area.... so it had to be a good place to start. Just to grab a coffee and wander the cobbled streets - traffic here was minimal and the people were very helpful whenever I got a little lost.

A little browsing at Rambla:
https://www.viator.com/photos/Barcelona-tours/City-Sightseeing-Barcelona-Hop-On-...

The architecture is amazing... love the curves.
https://www.viator.com/photos/Barcelona-tours/City-Sightseeing-Barcelona-Hop-On-...
The Casa Batllo on La Mansana de la Discordia. Designed by Antoni Gaudi.

Guell Park was another area I wanted to spend time in. The sights we exquisite - watching the people, and the architecture. It is another area of Gaudi's Masterpieces - Guell Park. I made sure to take my sketchbook.
https://www.viator.com/photos/Barcelona-tours/City-Sightseeing-Barcelona-Hop-On-...

My day pass got a workout. I enjoyed riding the bus, resting my feet between stops. I was able to see the highlights of the city without having to go to everything - there are 44 stops at leisure to explore... though I was tempted to go to more things. I needed to pace myself.

I opted not to go to the Picasso Museum, but I was eager to listen to what other's had to say.

I was able to get back in time to take a long shower and get ready for our dinner at 7pm. We got to experience an exhilarating, 2-hour flamenco performance at Barcelona’s legendary Tablao Cordobes. After feasting on paella and sipping sangria, we took our seats as an expectant hush descended over the audience. Lights dimmed as the performers glided onto the stage. The rhythms were intense, as were the passionate expressions on the faces of the dancers as the show unraveled before our eyes. It was quite and experience.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqxJMCQxb_Q

Lyn signed us all up for classes, so we all dress for a night of fun. I am not able to hold my face in the pouty torment of the dancers as I am prone to giggling and laughing at my futile attempts as I bang my feet to the rhythm and let my hands and arms fly around me. I am glad I was able to find a lovely dress for the night - a flowing red gown with thin straps. Mine covers my back so that I am not as flashy as the flamenco dancers, but the flow of the dress lets me flit around like I know what I am doing....

One thing I decided would be good to do for this trip... send myself a postcard from each place. That way when I get home I have a mittful of cards with stamps and postmarks from my European trip.

Day 29 – Never Never Land: Get Off Fantasy Island
"Most of us hold ourselves to unattainable 'Fantasy' standards that we can never live up to."

This could be anything from spending hours at the gym, always wanting to have the right answer or not making a mistake, following some religious doctrine.... regardless of what the high standard is, it is perfection and that can never be attained... we are setting ourselves up for failure and a "life of disappointment".

"Loving louder is about taking a look at those 'fantasy' standards we've been holding ourselves to and creating new, healthier ones that match our soul signature." Preston says we are all works in progress and loving louder is "about being authentically YOU." Trying to fix yourself based on a fantasy standard society has set leaves many people feeling that they never measure up.... well, that is bunk. There is "nothing to fix. You are perfect, whole, and complete, but you're not finished." We have work to do.... but that work is not because we are lacking; it is because we are simply bettering ourselves.

Keeping that in mind we realize - We are enough. We are not broken and do not require fixing. We are simply a work in progress.

Preston says to "give yourself a break and release yourself from the shackles of comparison and fantasy standards." You can't fail - if you are living, you are winning. You need to 'honor the gift that you are by recasting or letting go of the standards that have been holding you hostage."

#LOVELOUDERCHALLENGE
Make a list of fantasy standards you hold yourself to.
Perfect body? Immaculate house? What are you holding yourself to that is holding your happiness hostage?

I don't like making mistakes... and I find I don't try new things if I think I am going to fail.... so I stay stuck.
My ex-husband wanted an immaculate house. He would claim that I should be embarrassed to have others see our place looking like a 'pig sty'. It bothered me... I am creatively messy, but I was also living in a renovation nightmare. His expectations were excessive.... I came to realize I will never be the neat freak he wants or expects me to be.... so I have moved on.
I am also body conscious, but not as others.... I do like my body... I just don't like it when others make judgements about my varicose veins or my bumblebee butt.
