My random thoughts and reactions to my everyday life. The voices like a forum.
I do not know quite what happened or when , but my hubby and I now qualify for seniors' discounts at some venues. This creates a quandary; in order to save money, but not face, we have to admit to our age. HMMMM..... We definitely do not consider ourselves to be old. In this day and age ,when people as a whole are living longer and healthier lives why are 'young seniors', those in their fifties, like moi, considered 'old'?? It's so true that age is just a perception! "Maturity" is very objective/subjective, and I object! Whew, a few years have skittered by since I composed this biography block. Those "fifties" are in the rear view mirror and they are distant, fond memories. Oh, I do not plan to stop writing any time soon.

Old Dominion

Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, PA, US

https://www.songkick.com/artists/1652671-old-dominion#review-94747

We're going to catch this band on their way up, they are about to explode on the music scene! Seeing Old Dominion on the small stage, just by themselves at the MN State Fair was a huge treat! The Leinie bandstand was packed for both shows. This was our 3rd Old Dominion show in MN this year, so it was nice to have this personal glimpse of the band. A new album by the band is pending, and so looking forward to their new music, which they played several during their concerts at the State Fair. Also they have written for so many other artists and they covered their own songs, which is fun to see. I am still waiting to hear them cover the song they wrote with Sam Hunt "Make You Miss Me". Old Dominion writes their own lyrics and music, and they are a full band with such great depth of talent, between Matthew, Trevor and Brad who are the writers, singers and guitarists, Brad leading the guitar talent, and Trevor also on the keyboard. Matthew, the lead has such a rich voice with a fu
ll range of emotion packed into it. Whit on the drums and Geoff on bass complete the band. The humor the band shows in many of their songs comes through when on stage.

Man, I can't believe I missed the opportunity to have taken you to hmy home state, Old Dominion was playing in Bangor Maine,August 16th while we were in Joliet. *Headbang*

We're staying at the Doubletree in Philly, right near the Avenue of the Arts. Awesome location.

http://doubletree3.hilton.com/en/hotels/pennsylvania/doubletree-by-hilton-hotel-...

We're taking in a bit of culture today at the Philadelphia Art Museum

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g60795-d10800264-Reviews-Philadelp...

If we have time we're going to do one of Philly's famous duck tours before we head over to Citizen's Bank which is also the home of the Philly Fliers (baseball team).

I liked Philadelphia, Pennsylvania immediately. What a great welcoming gimmick to greet guests of the DoubleTree with a warm chocolate chip cookie. This is genius, and of course, I could think of no sane reason to refuse the delectable treat when it was offered to me.
I also couldn't resist the typical touristy thing. I just had to run up the Rocky steps. Well, I say run, but it wasn't as quick, or graceful as all that. As I recall, there probably was a great deal of gasping, and at least an audible moan or two. How did Rocky summon the strength to raise his arms in triumph?
I enjoyed my meander through the Philadelphia Art Museum. The exhibits were varied and interesting. Huh, apparently political cartoons rate a display.
You've managed to do it yet again [suser:elusive4lyn}.Before this fateful evening, I'd never heard of the headliner, Old Dominion. To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement. I like their tunes and lyrics. Not only are they energetic and personable, I appreciate the humour they project. I grooved to all of their songs, 'Snapback', 'Hotel Key', and 'Shut Me Up' being but a sample.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g36185-d7295640-Reviews-Rusty_Wall... We're going to learn how to drive like Nascar drivers. before kicking our heels at the Polka Festival.

10-acre park by the river with an outdoor bandshell for music concerts & theatrical shows.

Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park
201 W Jefferson St, Joliet, IL 60432

Ladies,we're going to a Polka Festival. It’s a Polka Party time with our favorites…rain or shine! We’ll move indoors if needed.

ACTS:
Eddie Korosa, Jr and the Boys & Girl from IL
with special guest “Mr. Slivo” John Churnovic on button box
Frank Rossi & The Sounds of Sinatra

EMCEE:
Joliet Councilwoman Jan Quillman

Enjoy the sweet sounds of summer music every Thursday at 6:30 pm – for FREE! Bring blankets and chairs for hill seating. Concessions are available, including beer and wine. We're going to participate in the polka activities, I hope you brought your dancing shoes.

What a day of contrasts today became. Hey, haven't we visited this state recently? We're back in Illinois, right?
Ooo, how exciting, race car driving! I booked this same driving package for my Nascar-fan hubby as an early birthday gift a few years ago. Yep, ol' Rusty Wallace was supposed to sponsor that experience, too. Between booking and paying, the day and location was changed. It was only offered in one far away, inconvenient site, and on a day my hubby couldn't possibly be there. Sadly, he never sat behind the wheel of a bonafide race vehicle. It became known as the drive that went nowhere. Huh, today I slipped behind the steering wheel, and thought of my forlorn partner. Firstly, I was pleasantly surprised that my bulk and I were not excluded. We could even snap the harness around us. The helmet felt a bit unwieldly and heavy. I briefly thought I must look like a bobble head. Oh, how exhilirating to feel that G-force slam me back into the seat! The poor radio guy is now deaf. I whooped and hollered. I could only imagine the wind streaming through my hair....darn clunky brain bucket.
Excuse me, polka?? Er, um, sure, why not? I grew up listening to the Canadian King of Polka, Walter Ostanek. After all, the Oktoberfest town loomed nearby, and my grandfather hailed from Poland. I recognize the "oom-pah-pah", and the accordion. I recall 'Beer Barrel Polka' and 'Roll Out the Barrel'. The tag line was, "we'll have a barrel of fun."
One good thing about polka, the dance moves are not complex. One just needs enthusiasm.
I loved this outdoor venue. Bicentennial Park provided lovely scenery and cooling-off breezes. Eddie Korosa, Jr. and the Boys and Girl From Illinois seem to love the polka, and their energy is contagious. How does a performer manage to both heft and play an accordion for hours? Some of their numbers had cutesy names, 'Tic Toc Polka', 'The Fat Polka', and 'Dog House Polka'.
Basically, I twirled, stomped, and sorta galloped, I believe. Great goofy fun!

Did you really think we'd leave New Orleans without checking out some Blues?

We're doing the 11:00 am City of the Dead tour, ladies.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/AttractionProductReview-g60864-d11453062-New_Orleans...

We're doing the 3:00pm Haunted History Ghost tour before heading to the Blues Club.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/AttractionProductDetail-g60864-d11448695-New_Orleans...

We're doing the early show and hitting Happy Hour at B.B. Kings Blue's Trio and BB Kings All-Star Band before we hit the tours.

http://www.bbkings.com/new-orleans/

I've scored a special tour for us that begins at 9pm instead of 8 pm.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/AttractionProductReview-g60864-d11453064-New_Orleans...

By the time the tour is over, we still have time to hit the Blues club again and maybe have another pub crawl *Rolling*
What a treat to stay put in one location for an extra day of fun and sightseeing. New Orleans is worth it. I indulged in a great breakfast at the Fleur de Lys café. Knowing today's tours involved a bit of walking, I happily forgave the pastry calories. I justified their brief sojourn in my blood stream. Soon enough they'd be a sweet memory.
What better way to explore the Big Easy if not in an ancient cemetery. St. Louis No.1 has existed since 1789. It is home to thousands of ornate crypts, mausoleums, and tombstones. Oh, the stories that lie buried there.
I denied myself the pleasure of purchasing a voodoo spell at the ritual shop. It may well be based on nothing more than superstition, herbs, oils, and amulets, but I really have no one I need to curse at the moment. Of course the legendary, bigger than life Frenchwoman, Marie Laveau is honoured as the Voodoo Queen. So, New Orleans is famous for its take charge females.
The second on-foot tour entitled The Haunted History Ghost Tour conjured up many creepy stories. Apparently, a French pirate with the moniker Jean Lafitte operated a smuggling enterprise from his blacksmith shop. Nowadays, it serves booze to the thirsty public as a functioning bar. I believe Jean would've approved of this.
Whew, after all of this strenuous exploration in the humidity, I was more than eager to sit, and sit I did at the B.B. King Blues Club. Now this was a place to unwind. I could not refuse a supper of shrimp and steak. I believe my muscles deserved it. I also indulged in a few of the signature cocktails with their creative names.
Yes, in a music club I just had to order and share tastes of the Boogie Woogie. After this, I savoured a Muddy Waters, a Fallen Angel, and a Lucille. Oh, they were equal parts delicious and potent.
Suitably relaxed and sated, I danced and sang along to all kinds of rousing music. Blues, rock and roll, whatever, I boogied.
Today didn't end here. Our groupies stumbled out for a Ghost, Voodoo, and Vampire Tour.. We probably resembled the zombie cast of the Michael Jackson video, 'Thriller'. We lurched. We swayed. We felt no pain. I'm certain there was groaning and moaning, too. I liked the spooky folklore our tour guide entertained us with.
The rest of the night became a blur, but I think we returned to B.B. King's bar, at least for a while. Those drinks were too easy, and the music weaved a spell.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60864-d89148-Reviews-Hotel_Monteleone-...

We're going to stay in the Historic Old French Quarter. The hotel looks really nice. https://hotelmonteleone.com/

After the concert, I'm heading to.relax after with the hotel state-of-the-art rooftop fitness center and heated pool with breathtaking views of the downtown New Orleans skyline. ,

New Orleans is just to fun to spend just one night here. Relax today and enjoy the concert, because tomorrow 8/15 we'll be doing the really cool vampire and ghost tours, spending time in the cemetary and the haunted...

Wow, I'm in New Orleans, Mardi Gras country. This place isn't anything like Chicago. {suser;elusive4lyn} is this a castle that you've booked us into? All I see at The Hotel Monteleone is gold and white. It looks swanky. Oo-la-la, we're tourists in the French Quarter. Do I need to remember my manners here?
Um, okay, really? This evening's concert is held at the Smoothie King Center. As in the smoothie we slurp on humid days? There's a smoothie king?
I quickly realized that tonight had a genre, the rap genre. May I go so far as to say it appeared to be angry, in your face, reactive rap.
The headliner, Young Thug aka Jeffrey Lamar Williams, rapped / intoned words in a strange voice. It seemed as if he used a voice synthesizer, and this required more concentration on my part to distinguish his lyrics. In 'Swizz Beatz', he repeated the words "with, with" over and over. Nah, he wasn't my cup of tea.
J.Cole aka Jermaine Lamarr Cole appealed a wee bit more to me. ( Oh, coincidentally, both Thug And J. have the similar middle name.) His rap, 'Children of Men' had a plausible story line with the memorable line, " right plan, wrong route."
I don't know what to think about Jaden Smith. Is he trying too hard? I kinda believe he's over-dressed as if he's unsure who to impress, or how to express himself. Good grief, he takes layering to an all new level. Does he wish to shock, or thumb his nose at people? His attempt to be a gangsta wannabe brother is ridiculous. I suppose all rappers create and maintain a persona, real or imagined. Anyway, his raps did not resonate with me.
The final act consisted of two dudes, Venus and Doc who perform as the duo EarthGang..Like the preceding performers, they are American. They rap about the negro experience. In 'Meditate', they frequently repeat the label "nigga". They state, " looking for peace in America, looking for peace when I look at ya." Again, in 'Momma Told Me', they regularly rap the word "nigga." Of all tonight's rappers, their stories were easiest to follow and understand.
After assaulting my ears, I headed to the hotel's wonderful bar, The Carousel. It had a bustling, fun vibe.
I joined my fellow groupies at the rooftop pool. New Orleans shines like a jewel under the black sky.
Would anyone care to join me for breakfast tomorrow at the nearby Fleur de Lys Café?

Things to do,I'm leaning toward the Prohibition Tours but I'll leave you the list

https://www.tripadvisor.com/AttractionsNear-g35805-d90969-Holiday_Inn_Chicago_Do...

Today, all of us find ourselves in The Windy City, Chicago, Illinois. Okay, I have bypassed this metropolis in the passenger seat of a semi. I recall traffic, far too much, endless traffic. The local drivers deserve our respect. They deal daily with the vehicle zoo.
I'm with you Lyn's a Witchy Woman , a Prohibition Tour sounds fascinating. Somewhere in my Canadian background there might lurk a relative who participated and aided with that American alcohol ban of the 1920's. Now, I'm not saying any of my kin were rum runners, or whiskey smugglers, but the possibility exists. I can't fathom. or comprehend such a time. Illicit booze must've seemed so tempting, so deliciously dangerous.
First of all, may I say that the bus transportation was so comfy. After wandering in and out of four speakeasies, and sampling their vintage wears, my feet had difficulty following orders. No, I was not a stumbling drunk, but if I had perchance succumbed to the powerful effects of gravity, those same feet would've abandoned all pretext of carrying me. They were feeling no pain. The guide proved hilarious. Her rapt listeners were too relaxed to question anything she told us. Thanks to the Green Door and the Club Lucky, I am officially a scofflaw. I thumbed my nose, and raised a glass against a repressive, ineffectual law.
So, thanks to my afternoon delight, I arrived at the United Center relaxed and ready to hear The Smashing Pumpkins. I do recognize this group's name, but I'm a little hazy re their work.
Huh, they do favour dramatic make-up. It might have been my slightly blurred vision, but the singers appeared to be liberal with the cosmetics, and they applied it with zombie-like results. Not the worst music, I've ever heard. I would qualify it as different. I remember this number because of its unique title, 'Bullet With Butterfly Wings'.
I anticipate that I will slumber comfortably at the Holiday Inn.

Five Finger Death Punch, often shortened to Five Finger or Death Punch, also abbreviated as 5FDP or FFDP, is an American heavy metal band from Las Vegas, Nevada. Formed in 2005, the band's name comes from the kung fu movie The Five Fingers of Death

I don't know about you ladies but these late night cocktails are making my jeans snug, How about some hiking

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g34877-d3499260-Reviews-Big_Creek_...
Is it just me? Am I the only one feeling slightly disoriented, discombobulated? It's as if my feet rarely touch the ground. I never dreamed a groupie flitted around so much, and so far. Goof grief, we're in Alpharetta, Georgia for a brief visit.
I actually felt better after a meandering hike along the Big Creek Greenway this afternoon. There's something so serene and soothing about water and trees. I espied several birds and a deer.
Just because I felt like it and it was available, I splashed in the Hampton Inn pool. I lounged with the best of them.
Tonight's entertainers are not familiar. They do have a rather catchy in you face name though, the Five Finger Death Punch, or FFDP. Imagine being recognized by a mere four letters. How have I lived this long without having any prior knowledge of this group?
I really liked the lyrics to their tune, 'Wrong Side of Heaven'. They described the complexity, the paradox of survival. "I'm on the wrong side of heaven, and the righteous side of Hell." Yep, it's the ol' damned if you do, damned if you don't.

There's a lot to see here. I'm going to let you decide.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g32037-Activities-Bakersfield_California...
Well, we're all well into this virtual concert tour. This is day 11 already, and now we're in Bakersfield, California. We do manage to get around. We just skipped from one coast to the other.
Huh, apparently I had my pick of local tours. I chose one based upon childhood memories of The Hee Haw television show. Oh, how I laughed at the on-screen antics of the regulars. So, I visited The Buck Owens' Crystal Palace. Why not?
Not only did I peruse through some country and western memorabilia, I enjoyed a bountiful lunch buffet.
This evening's entertainers at Rabobank Arena proved fantastic. I confess I rarely listen to R&B / soul music. Keith Sweat has a seductive, crooning voice that suited his love ballad, 'I'll Give My All To You'.
The next performer, Jon B. & High Five were also R & B/ soul. Like Keith, they were a new experience for me. I liked 'They Don't Know' and 'Pretty Girl'.
I've decided I need to listen to this style of music more often.

We're in section C5 Ladies and Gents and Billy Joel is going to entertain us this evening.

We're staying at the Westin because I've always wanted to stay there but the dang price was always out of my range. Virtual money has its advantages.

Booked us on the last tour of the day.
https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60745-d595373-Reviews-The_Westin_Bosto...

A little history before we hit Fenway Park and Billy Joel. It's going to be a blast.
Okay, I've teleported to the east Coast, and landed in Boston, Massachusetts. I'm not bragging, but apparently I do get around. It's as if all I must do is blink. I don't recall clicking my heels together, and making a wish.
If only I could whistle, Lyn's a Witchy Woman . Woohee, this Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel is expensive! It seems decadent, but hey, we're more than worth it. With the cost of spending one night here, we should all have shares now, profitable ones. Imagine the smiles of the investors whoever they may be. I certainly can learn to enjoy this level of luxury.
This is my first time in Boston, so, sure I'll hop on an orange and green trolley to explore the historic sights. Now I can put an image to the neighbourhood names I've read about in novels. Ah, so that's Beacon Hill and Back Bay. Oh, Boston is known as the Cradle of Liberty. I'm impressed by all the green spaces.
Hurray, this evening's concert features Billy Joel, Mr. Piano Man himself. Of course, I am familiar with his hits. I shamelessly sang along to all his songs, off key, but with heart. 'Uptown Girl', 'Piano Man', 'Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me', "She's Always a Woman', and 'It's Still Rock and Roll To Me' rocked Fenway Stadium. Where does ol' Billy get his boundless energy and enthusiasm? I can only hope to be that alive when I'm sixty-nine.

Have you got your Elvis impersonation mastered? I entered everyone in the annual Elvis impersonation/tribute contest.

Share your favorite Elvis tune and why?

We're staying in an RV I rented on another Graceland property. Didn't want you to miss out on genuine southern hospitality.

https://www.graceland.com/elvisweek/schedule/

See the big brown and tan striped rv closest to the building, that's ours.

What a whirlwind! From sunny California to Graceland, Mississippi., we roll along. Why not experience a little bit of the King? Sigh, Elvis.... Mom never collected black velvet paintings Thank God, but she was a fan. I can picture her as a teenager waiting expectantly for Elvis to make an appearance. She'd be trembling wide-eyed, close to hysteria and fainting. His singing could lighten her mood and still make her starry-eyed after becoming a mother to four.
I suppose I prefer his tender, emotional ballads. When he crooned them, his amazing voice left no doubt he had talent. 'Love Me Tender', 'In the Ghetto', 'It's Now Or Never', and 'Can't Help Falling In Love' are but a few songs that showcase this.
I admit I also like the rollicking songs featured in his movies. They were catchy, fun, and danceable. Of course, he portrayed the hero, and there always seemed to be a damsel in distress to rescue. 'Jailhouse Rock', \Viva Las Vegas', and 'Blue Hawaii' are classic films.
Hmmm, how could I impersonate Elvis the Pelvis? Several of us tried "the sneer", "the lip curl". It made it difficult to sing, and we dissolved into snorting laughter. Okay, we attempted the short nod, and that well-known line, "Thank you, thank you very much.". Of course, we giggled at trying to choke out, "hunka hunka burning love." I believe we had a bit more luck with the hip thrust / pelvis twist move. Sadly, I do not own any clothing swathed in sequins, nor did I happen to have a bedazzler with me. Actually, I have not warn a jumpsuit since the '70s either. Intrepid Apondia found a costume rental business nearby.
I think the most fun was trying on the various wigs and fake sideburns. We all looked ridiculous in our signature black pompadours. The obviously fake sideburns came in one size fits all. They were long enough to hide our necks, or our entire faces. We resembled cartoon lumberjacks. That "hair" is coarse and itchy. Wearing a pair of dark glasses was the easy part. We needed them to protect our eyes from the glare of millions of gleaming sequins.
I tripped repeatedly over the wide bell-bottoms, the flares. I want to know how Elvis did not drop and lose his microphone down into those voluminous sleeves. Talk about trick or treat.
Oh, it felt wonderful to hear the applause for our feeble Elvis impersonation. I don't kid myself that my singing brought the house down. Actually, I believe I may be responsible for the untimely shattering of a few stage lights. The nice stage hands tried to claim that the heat caused them to blow...how sweet. They also didn't make too much of a fuss over my stumbling amongst some cables.
The audience were good sports. They listened to our squawking and they still clapped. This was all accepted as great fun. I shall remember this evening as being a step above karaoke.

Lots of glass with a crazy view. 675 L Street, San Diego, CA 92101-7022

I've got us booked for an electric bike tour, ladies.

San Diego California..... hello sunshine! Really? It never rains? This is my kind of city. My flip flops and I could get used to this.
Foot loose and fancy free, I joined my fellow groupies in an electric bike tour. Not having to pedal and exert myself felt strange. I just had to concentrate on my balance and steer as I gawked in awe at the gorgeous scenery.
Queen's power anthem, "Bicycle" repeated itself in my sight-seeing brain. I enjoyed the breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean from the summit of Mount Soledad. There are so many words for the glorious colour blue; azure, turquoise, cerulean. I can't quite believe I scaled that height.
Since this is a music inspired cross-country trek, it made perfect sense to visit Windan Sea Beach a back drop for Beach Boy videos. Surfing sure looks like fun, but no, I did not attempt to hang ten, or anything else.
My sea lions and harbour seals are a noisy bunch! They resemble human beach bums who loll and laze in the sun.
Wow, La Jolla reminds me of episodes of 'The Rich and Famous'! can we say mansions? Do the inhabitants rely upon GPS?
Tonight's entertainment took place at Humphrey's Concerts by the Bay. Hmm, funny, but when I hear the name Humphrey, I think of an elephant. I believe he's an English character. Anyway,,,,
All of this evening's performers can be summed up in one word, nostalgia. It's much more polite than saying old, or aged, or "experienced". Yes, the groups have been around the block, and most of the world, yet they still live to perform. They obviously have the music in them, and love to share it. These singers have lived the rock and roll experience.
So, Rick Derringer... I did not recognize his name, and whew, is he ever a powerhouse, a dynamo. I did recall his song though, 'Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo'. It's a catchy number.
Okay, Badfinger, I do recognize. I remember this British groups hits from the 1970s. I enjoyed listening to their numbers and singing along. It became a trip down memory lane. 'Day After Day', 'Come and Get It'. and 'No Matter What' still sound incredible.
The name Vanilla Fudge didn't ring any bells. Another random weird name choice. Imagine my surprise when the opening notes for 'You Keep Me Hanging On' hung in the air. I know every word.
Joey Molland is known as a member of Badfinger. He hails from Liverpool and has the accent to prove it. I liked his song 'Walk Out In the Rain'.
This group's name kinda made sense. Mitch Ryder is from Michigan and his band is known as The Detroit Wheels. I really enjoyed their catchy, danceable set. They have a 1950s vibe of rock and roll. 'Devil With the Blue Dress On' and 'I Like It Like That'have energy.
We rubbed elbows with the rest of the dancing crowd. I let myself get caught up in the fun. Lyn's a Witchy Woman bravo!!
