The forest is silent, and the thick fog prevents you from seeing more than a hundred feet in any direction. The only sounds come from the rhymetic hooves of the horse you're riding it trots along. To prepare for your journey into the darkness below, you have packed a bag which contains a long coil of rope, several short torches, some flint, and some dried meats just incase.
The trees begin to become more sparse before opening up into a large clearing. That's when you begin to notice some broken stones in the grass around you. Slowly, the ruins break the fog as you approach. Unturned stones hint at what once was a majestic sight, now just a pile of rubble that towered above you in certain areas.
You hop off of your horse and sling your bag of supplies over one shoulder before climbing over the rubble, heading towards the center. As you move around a large chunk of stone, you notice that some of the rubble has been moved aside to reveal stairs which descend down into darkness. If your memory serves you right, down there is the store rooms, supply areas, dungeons, catacombs... anything that original occupants would want well protected, or out of sight.
Taking out one of the torches from the sack, you easily light the wrapped end with the flint, and descend down the stairs carefully. The torch in your hand casts a strong orange glow against the stones, but even it has trouble penetrating the darkness ahead. At the very best you can only see thirty or forty feet in front of you.
Now, there remains one more important question... where to begin your search for treasure?
