Brief insights into my writing world.
I started my blog in June 2016, intending to have a place to get my stories in the hands of readers. I started with one follower -- my wife. Seven years later, I am creeping toward 500 followers. I post a daily quote, as well as short stories, vignettes, and updates on our rebuilding project.

You can find my Tavern Tales at: https://jjshaun.com/

Enjoy!

After the intermission, Lyryk returned to the stage. Eliam joined her a few moments later. His face was pale, as if he were ill. He picked up his harp and plucked a mournful tune. She tapped the rhythm on her drum, letting him set the tempo.

Spymaster Tordak Hammersong had secured a commission for Lyryk Starsong to play on the fortieth birthing day of one Lady Pamila Redthorne. Rumors swirled around the Redthorne family, and nearby residents found them strange birds, indeed. Lord and Lady Redthorne invited the elite of Morganskeep to attend various celebrations throughout the year. And, every season, the gossip brought more rumors of the family’s odd behavior and unusual taste in music and art.

You board the trade and passenger vessel Sea Drake in Thayur, the major trade hub along the eastern seaboard. Your plan: to sail from Thayur to the northern desert port city of Abad-Noir, then maybe along to Brookhaven, Port Ramall, and eventually Noxport. These cities are all major ports along the main trade roads that connect the continent’s interior.

The next morning, Malusk, Skrie, and Theren sat in the common room of Ermina’s and broke their fast. Garrick had stumbled in near dawn, stinking of ale. He lay passed out in the room. Ermina, seeing Skrie’s worn vestments, directed the group to the Temple Square.

“NO!” Zola kicked and screamed as Headman Bearleader and his guard dragged her out of the camp. “I won’t go!” She leaned down and bit the guard on the forearm, breaking the skin, the blood coppery on her tongue.

Ashja went down to the common room to break her fast. She sat at the same table she had shared with Morhirr and Fynnwyn the day before, only this time, her back was to the wall. She had a fairly good view of the common room.

Maus Tallpine grew up in the village of Neeth Serine. The elves of the Neeth had existed peacefully for millennia. The clan took care of the forests to prevent the spread of disease and maintain a balanced predator population. Until the land of their ancestors became a battleground between the high elves and the humans, that is.

Airne stood at the prow as the ship cut through the water. She was finally returning to her home island of Trivent, in the Dragon’s Claw Archipelago.

“Nervous?” asked Evie.

“No.” A moment later she said, “yes. Maybe.”

“Kyreah!” screeched Jarla, stalking toward where Lyryk had spread her bedroll. She rolled out of the way of the kick meant to wake her.

“My name is ‘Lyryk,’” she said, ducking the hand that shot out to box her ear. The woman discovered early on how sensitive her ears were to a slap or pinch.
