Chapter #7

Looking Outside the Box

    by: Small1 Author IconMail Icon
Bryan slowly worked up his courage to approach the small incision with which he had entered the package. There had been a long lull of silence after the recent upheaval and now the shrunken scientist's curiosity urged him to take a look outside the box.

Bryan pushed open the small slit that, at his normal size, he had sliced into the cardboard side of the box. He squeezed through the narrow opening and emerged into an unbelievable world.

Despite his earlier experiments, which gave him firsthand knowledge of what to expect from a drastically reduced perspective, Bryan felt terribly small and meager at finding himself — and the shipping package — stranded atop a book shelf in his office.

He took a few tentative steps on the wooden surface beneath his feet that stretched out like the roof of some enormous city building.

At that point, Bryan stared across the vast gulf toward his desk. He felt a sudden shock to find a giant sitting in his chair.

The guy looked both enormous and, Bryan realized with another jolt of shock, familiar.

"Greg?" Bryan said aloud, noticing how the truly colossal office space swallowed up his thin voice. "What's he doing in my office?"

Dr. Thompson had chosen Greg, a young grad student from the local university, as an intern to work with him on research projects.

From a few meetings, Bryan came away with a good impression of the earnest young man.

Now his immediate impression, all based on the sheer scale of Greg's enormous body, left Bryan gaping in awe.

The tiny scientist's stance of frozen reverence ended with a loud knock at the office door.

Bryan's awe increased as he saw Tommy enter the office.

Greg, still seated behind the desk, asked Tommy what he needed.

"I am supposed to pick up a package to drop in the mail for Dr. Smith," the teen informed Greg.

Greg pushed back and rose from his seat behind the desk. "Oh, I think I know what you're looking for."

So, too, did Bryan. "I've got to get back in the box!"

But, even as he scurried back toward the box, Greg managed to cross the room in only a couple of strides.

Just as Bryan tried to push his way back inside the box, Greg's huge hand reached down and picked it up.

Bryan's tiny fingers gripped the small flap of cardboard as he tried to cling desperately as the box rose from the surface of the shelf.

Greg turned to hand the box to Tommy.

Although dangling so precariously, Bryan could not help but focus on the two titans surrounding him.

You have the following choices:

1. Bryan falls

2. Bryan pulls himself inside the box
