Before supper

Isabelle ran a muddy hand through her tangled hair, sighing a well-used sigh. She was tired of it all. She was tired of always having to look neat and 'presentable'. She was tired of being reprimanded for spending time with the only friend she actually liked. She was tired of being a princess!
"I can't do it anymore," she murmured, gazing down at her filthy jeans with a sad smile. An idea began to spread through her quick, clever mind. It would be simple - before supper the halls were empty. Just as the bell would ring she'd leave, away from her restricting life and parents. Off and away on her fastest horse, Daniel beside her. It would be brilliant; they could go anywhere, do anything. She smiled a proper, Isabelle-ish grin, and ran out to the stables.

Daniel was not in the stables, nor was in the fields. As Isabelle approached the only remaining place he could be hiding in, she realised something which made her shiver. Daniel couldn't possibly leave. He had a good job, an income. He wouldn't dare leave all that to run off with some silly spoilt princess. But... No, she was being ridiculous. Of course he would come! She was his best friend, and had been for years. He would certainly support her, whatever she did.
"Dan? You there?" She dismissed all anti-Daniel thoughts and scrambled up the tallest oak tree to her treehouse. She and Daniel often played there, although it had become rather damp and bleak.
"Dan?" Just as with her first call, there was no reply. She hoisted herself into the small treehouse...
