The treehouse was empty. Isabelle felt tears springing to her eyes - he was completely gone! She pushed off the narrow, wooden ledge and toppled down to the ground, ignoring the sudden (but not too terrible) pain in her right arm. Once again, she checked the stables: no Daniel. She checked the fields: no Daniel. He had disappeared. It was not his day off, which only came round at the end of the month, and he had definitely not been given a different duty that day. He had already told her it was the day for cleaning the stables, and that always took most of his working hours.
"Adam!" she called, recognising a farmer approaching, "have you seen Daniel, the stableboy?" She hurried forward, and stopped Adam in his tracks. He frowned.
"Danny? Aye, I seen 'im. Round the back of the 'ouse 'e is, with some 'ousemaid, playin' a game o' tag if I remember correctly. Aye, 'e seemed quite fond of 'er. Pretty little lass, she is." He smiled and strolled on into the fields, smoking a thin cigarette. Isabelle was rooted to the ground. Daniel with a housemaid? 'Fond of her'? It wasn't possible. Daniel only ever spoke to the housemaids when he was with the princess! And he couldn't be fond of anyone; the only girl he spent any amount of time with was Isabelle! She tearfully ran away from the stables to the palace. The back gardens were walled, but she simply pushed the heavy door wide and burst in.
