Dauphin looked at the other faelan. It was clearly unhappy and shaking badly. To get it to appear before the crowd she had a feeling it must have been mistreated by the state it was now in.
The auction was nearing a close.
"Any more bids?"
"6,000 ira," the crowd heard.
The auctioneer turned his head.
"6,000 ira from the lady at the back. Going, going, gone! Sold to the lady at the back."
Dauphin moved her way forward. Bidding on the faelan had been a rash decision, as she had nowhere to live and no stables and now two faelans to support! But she handed over the money with confidence and looked over her new faelan. It was tied in several places - obviously the auctioneer had not trusted it not to break free.
Dauphin walked closer and held out her hand to touch its fine silver mane, keeping as far from its jagged teeth as she could manage. Not that such an act was difficult the way its head was captured.
"It's okay. Come with me," she told the creature and slowly undid the head restraint. Its body was still captured, but if it wanted to attack her it was now capable of doing so. Dauphin was intelligent enough to know, however, that its attention was elsewhere on her faelan Aeredne. Aeredne was female and if she was not mistaken this faelan was definitely male and although it might not follow her anywhere it would happily follow Aeredne!
She undid the back restraints also, so the faelan was entirely free and guiding it with her hand alone walked through the crowd with Aeredne at her other side. It was an amazing sight to the locals, who had seen the faelan's earlier viciousness - that this small girl had it seemingly under her power. Dauphin hid an inner chuckle that they did not realise it was not her but Aeredne that had the faelan under her spell!
"Madam, have you anywhere to stable those creatures?"
Dauphin turned to face a well dressed man. He had been the bidder she had beaten at the auction. She needed stables desperately, at least for the night, but this man could be attempting to steal the animal soon after she had bought it.
