Chapter #2

The middle school

    by: Tisch Author IconMail Icon
"The middle school section, huh? Can do," Derek said. Having been given his assignment for the day from Principal Franklin, he walked off with a smile. As he traveled out to the hall, Derek thought to himself. "This wasn't the most organized group when I was there last week. Although, we were only going over the syllabus. I suppose the attention span for any age group would be pretty small when that's the subject of class. Maybe today will be easier."

When Derek arrived at the first of his assigned classrooms, Room 129, he peered in and saw the teacher at the back of the classroom. "That's weird, the desk is at the back? I wonder what that's all about." The little guy made his way to the back and called out to the woman sitting at her desk. "Excuse me, I'm Derek Bates. I'm the teaching assistant assigned to this class period. You are?" he called. The woman jumped, startled at the sudden noise. She initially looked up, thinking that there would be a normal person standing there, but there wasn't. Confused, she then looked down and found Derek on the floor. "Oh my goodness," the teacher gasped, "you're so small, sweetie. Are you sure you're in the right place?" The woman slowly motioned towards Derek. He rolled his eyes and let her pick him up. He noticed her hands were warm and smooth, smelling of lotion. She set him down in front of her then introduced herself. "My name is Maria Grover, but of course in front of the students you can call me Mrs. Grover or Mrs. G," she smiled. Derek observed her from her desk. Mrs. Grover was a beautiful woman, with curly black hair, bronzed skin, and warm brown eyes with glasses. She had a wonderful figure too, though Derek thought better than to bring that up. Her demeanor was also really comforting. "Nice to meet you Maria, I'm Derek Bates. I'm happy to have been assigned to your class this morning," Derek pleasantly returned. Mrs. Grover was about to answer back when the first bell rang, denoting it was time for the students to head to their classes. Mrs. Grover motioned for Derek to head to the front of the room. They each went off and once all of the students were settled in the classroom, the head teacher introduced Derek.

"Good morning class," Mrs. Grover began, "this is Mr. Bates. He is an assistant and will be your resource for help or directions of any kind. If I am busy or if you would prefer it, you are more than welcome to go to him." Derek waved to the class. He noticed there was not a single student who wasn't fixated on him. "I didn't realize how popular I would be with these kids," Derek joked to himself. "I suppose middle school is that time of curiosity though. Especially with someone like me." After introducing Derek, Mrs. Grover returned to her desk and began announcing the plan for the period. Meanwhile, Derek was stationed at the front of the room on a spare table. He once again looked out to the class. About half were paying attention to Mrs. Grover and the other half were either fiddling around or locking eyes with him. Derek sighed. "Let's just hope this will go over easy," he thought.

How does the first class of the day go for Derek?
