Chapter #3

Mistakingly authoritative

Fortunately, the class did go very well for Derek. The teacher, Mrs. Grover, gave him a warming welcome and the students did the same. Though the lecture itself was a little long and tedious, Derek was able to assist a few students when they raised their hands and all were well behaved. On a few occasions, there was a student who would ask about his height and go into personal matters, but Derek steered clear of feeding into these conversations and brought the students back on track to the task at hand. At the end of the period, he was back at his desk and waving off students as they walked by. "Well, this class certainly seemed to take a liking to you," Mrs. Grover smiled. Derek turned to face her. "Yeah, I'm happy that they did," he replied. "Now I just have to hope the next class feels the same. Although, we have break in the middle of the class, so I'm sure they'll be feeling fine at one point or another." The two teachers saw each other off and went their separate ways.

In his next class, Derek was assigned with Mrs. Fischer. She was a slim woman, standing at 5'8, with a perky chest and smooth peachy skin. Her and Derek got off to a bit of a shaky start as she set her bag on him on the desk. After making the mistake, Mrs. Fischer concealed a laugh and dryly apologized. Derek wasn't too impressed with her behavior, but moved on right away.

Throughout the first half of the class, things went smoothly. Mrs. Fischer directed the class at her steady pace and Derek went around assisting students that needed extra help. While he was out on patrol, he noticed a girl on her phone in the back row. Derek walked over and called out to her. "Excuse me, what's your name?" The girl flicked her black hair back and looked down at Derek. "Um, Sasha," she spoke in a monotone. "Thanks, Sasha. I'm sorry, but I need you to put your phone away. Do you need help with any of what Mrs. Fischer has been going over?" The girl continued to glare at the small assistant. "No, I'm okay. But if you wouldn't mind leaving me alone, that would be great," Sasha flared back. Derek shook his head. "All right, enough. Please just keep your phone away and I won't have to bother you." He walked away before Sasha retorted back. She gazed annoyingly at him as he went away, bothered by having been talked to.

Later on, Derek was making another trip around the class. It was only a few minutes before the end of the first half of the class period and everyone was getting ready for break. Mrs. Fischer was wrapping up her lecture and getting ready to hand out a homework piece of the material. Derek noticed that the girl he spoke to earlier, Sasha, was once again on her phone. He sighed and walked in her direction. "Sasha," he called as he approached her desk. She dropped her phone and it landed near Derek. "I thought I asked you to put your phone away. What happened?" Sasha rolled her eyes. "Oh my gosh, why are you singling me out? I'm not doing anything," she said. The black-haired girl reached for her phone. Incidentally, she knocked Derek over as she lifted it into the air. "Ugh," Derek uttered as he stood up. Sasha noticed this and a smirk formed on her face. "You know, there actually is something you could help me with," the girl chuckled. "And what might that be?" Derek asked. Suddenly, the girl's hand shot down at him and grabbed the guy, pulling him up and under Sasha's desk. Derek called out to her, but Sasha silenced him by covering his mouth with her hand. Sneakily, she slid Derek into her coat pocket and zipped it up. Then, the bell rang, releasing the students for break. Sasha briskly walked out of the classroom and headed outside, speeding over to the school's playground. She wanted to get back at Derek for isolating her.

What was it Sasha had in mind?
