Mom and I had just returned home from shopping for a new wardrobe for the newly slender me, when a man and a woman approached us. "Madame," the woman said, "we must speak to you and your daughter, on a matter of the utmost importance."
"We're happy with our church, thanks," Mom replied.
The man looked at me. "How are your dreams? Have they gotten bad yet?"
"How did you know that?" I asked. Then, I recognized their unibrows. "Wait; I saw you two when I checked out of the hospital. What's going on?"
"We can explain everything inside," said the woman.
So Mom and I led them inside. "These people seem to know what's happening to Tasha," Mom explained to Dad's questioning look, "and they say they can explain it."
"Alright, then," Dad said, "let's hear it."
The man cleared his throat. "For a start," he said, "my name is Randall Woolsey; and this is my mother, Susi. You've all seen me before: I showed up at the cabin you were staying at."
Dad shook his head. "I don't recall seeing you there."
"That's because I didn't look like this. I was eight feet tall, and covered with fur."
"What are you saying?"
Susi answered. "What my son is saying is that he is a werewolf; as am I. And, because your daughter survived the bite of a werewolf, she is now one of us, as well."
"A werewolf?" I don't know what shocked me more: hearing such a thing being talked about in the real world, or how much sense it actually made.
"Do you really expect us to believe that?" Dad asked.
"You had better, sir," Susi replied, "because it's true. When the moon is full, your daughter will change, just as my son and I do. And, unless she takes precautions, she will attack others, just as she was attacked."
"I thought werewolves weren't supposed to remember what they did," Matt said.
"That's just something Hollywood screenwriters came up with," she explained, "to build sympathy for their werewolves. No, Tasha: You won't think exactly as you do now, but you will be in control of your actions, and you will remember everything you do."
"If you're like this," Mom asked, "why don't you take precautions, so you don't do this to people?"
"Normally, we do," Randall replied. "But I was working later than I should have that night, and I didn't make it to my safe room in time. And now, your daughter will pay the price."
"We are prepared to assist you," Susi added, "so that Tasha will be prepared. We will pay for the necessary conversion of any available property you may have into a safe room for her."
"The basement is unfinished," Mom said.
"Perfect. Now, construction won't be complete in time for the next moon set; however, you are welcome to stay with us in the Hamptons for that time."
"Moon set?" I asked.
"The night of the full moon, and the nights immediately before and after. It's on those nights when we change. We'll also provide sustenance for you on those nights, and arrange for you to have what's necessary here. We may have to convert your garage so you can keep rabbits there."
I was a werewolf. And now, I had to make preparations for the full moon.
I also had to tell my friends.
