Envy

Surrounding was an ominous darkness, with looming silence putting her more at unease. She sat up in the bed to look around better, and once she did Melona saw that the bed was encircled by a long snake tail, as wide as a tree trunk and green like emeralds. She followed the tail to find its source, turning along with its slithering. Soon, she was not looking down but up, and not at a snake's head but a woman’s body.

The tail thinned down into the slim waist of the woman and scales gave way to smooth skin. She looked higher up to see the slim body turn into a pair of large bountiful breasts, rivaling those of her professors and only covered up by a piece of brown cloth. Flanking them was a pair of smooth shoulders, neither with so much as a hint of an arm attached to them, giving the body a more serpent-like appearance that was otherwise betrayed by its bosom. Finally, atop all of it, was of course the head. Bright white teeth were on display with a scowl, two pairs of fangs on the top and bottom of the mouth respectively were drawn in an intimidating scowl. A pair of emerald eyes with thin slit-shaped pupils. Bright green hair covered her head like a veil. Finally, a pair of curved horns sprouted from her hair, one of which was broken in half.

The snake woman spoke up. “You know who I am, right?”

There was only one being who could look like her and have such a terrifying aura. “Y-You’re Porama. Demonic Avatar of Envy.”

“Yes, and do you know why I summoned you here?” Porama asked.

Melona sat there for a while, thinking really hard on what the reason could be, but was unable to think of anything.

“Don’t act like you don’t know!” Porama’s tail wrapped around Melona’s body.

“I really don't!” Melona exclaimed.

“Don’t play dumb. With your cute looks, your smarts, your wealthy family,” Porama said angrily.

Melona blinked. Was this supposed to be some kind of pep talk?

“Your life is so much better than mine! It isn’t fair,” Porama said.

“What?”

“You’re just a mere human, yet you have so much more to be grateful for.”

“Excuse me? No!” It didn’t matter if she was talking to a demon, Melona was NOT sitting through another one of these talks again. “My life is NOT great. It sucks! How the hell does an Avatar of Sin have a worse life than me?”

Porama tightened her tail around Melona again. “Well, for one, your rich parents.”

“My parents are the worst!” Melona effortlessly pushed the tail off of her. “They’re both rich, but they won’t even pay for my textbooks. My dad pretends I don’t exist, and my mom’s a stupid bimbo who couldn’t even let me inherit her looks.”

“The closest thing to parents I have created angels to kill me. I’d love to have parents that ignored me like that,” Porama said.

“At least you have demon powers to take care of yourself. I can’t even levitate a feather.”

“But my power is the weakest of the seven Avatars. A fact they remind me of constantly.”

“Oh, you’re bullied for being weak too? Boohoo, you’re only the seventh strongest demon lord. At least you HAVE magic powers. I’m just a normal person. I’m not even good to look at.”

“Am I supposed to believe such a blatant lie?” Porama said, sounding insulted.

Oh great, you want me to prove I have no magic too? Melona thought.

“You’re small and cute. Many mortals envy the way you look.”

“Wh-what?” Melona blushed, unprepared for the sudden complement.

“Of course I envy your body too. Just look at me, I’m a hideous monster. I’d give anything to look like you.”

“Y-You’re not hideous. You’re… quite hot, I think,” Melona said, not sure where this argument was going now.

“How? How is a long tail in place of legs ‘sexy’? Or my lack of arms? Or my misshapen horns?”

“S-Some people are into that.” She didn’t even exaggerate. She had met several people into at least one of those traits.

“More than your soft cheeks? Your straight teeth? Your charmingly messy hair? Your cute glasses? Even your eyes have more beauty than mine.”

“That-that’s all subjective. You know what EVERYONE likes? Long flowing hair. Naturally smooth skin. Huge boobs. All things you have.”

“None of that is considered cute, though.”

“Ugh, you don’t HAVE to be cute. Why can’t you just be happy you’re hot and move on?”

“Are you truly stupid?” Porama wrapped her tail around Melona again. “I’m the Avatar of Envy. I CAN’T be happy for what I am.”

“Wh-why?”

“I’m the embodiment of envy itself. Being grateful for what I have is completely against my nature. So I can only ever feel jealous over what I don’t have.”

“That… sounds,” Melona tried to think of a response to that.

“Miserable? Because it is! You can at least grow past your envy. I’m stuck with it for as long as I live.”

“I’m… sorry to hear that. I-if it means anything, I’ve been jealous of women that look like you my whole life.”

“Let me guess, ‘you’d trade yours for one like mine in a heartbeat,’ right?”

“Y-yeah. Exactly how I feel.”

Porama sighed. “Yeah. Feeling’s mutual. But I can help you in that regard.”

“Huh?”

“I summoned you because I sensed great envy in your heart. A small blessing from me, and you can get exactly what you want.”

“Uh… I was told not to take deals from strangers. Especially if they’re demons.”

“But they don’t know how miserable you are with your life, don’t they? Just like you didn’t know how unhappy I was only a minute ago?”

Melona was silent. A blessing from a demon sounded tempting, even if she didn’t fully know what it would entail.

Before she knew it, Porama leaned closer and used her tail to nudge Melona forward. The mortal girl leaned in instinctively. Soon enough their lips locked together. They stayed together, not out of sensuality, but because of an energy that seemed to flow between them. When it finally ended, Melona was allowed to break free.

And then she woke up to find…
