She ran into a friend

"Mel!"

Melona turned toward the chipper voice to find Drif, her best and only friend in the academy. A fellow flunkie like Melona, but for entirely different reasons, as Drif didn't care for any classes that weren't about potions. She spent every moment experimenting with potions, testing potions, thinking about potions, collecting ingredients for potions, or resting in the nurses office after an experiment goes awry. Despite her strange and somewhat unhinged personality, she never looked down on Melona and was always there for her when asked.

"What'cha makin'?" Drif asked, cocking her head to the side, eyeing the mixture Melona was pouring into the disposal tub (one should never pour a potion down the drain.)

"Health potion." Melona groaned, sending Drif into a fit of awkward laughter.

"Haha! Oh Mel..." Drif said, trying to be nice, "Do you want some help?"

"Yeah..." Melona surrendered, as much as she wanted to figure it out on her own, she didn't want to cause some sort of bioalchemical disaster. The two walked back to the magic stoves and placed their respective cauldrons next to each other. Drif gave Melona various pointers and explanations, all the while absentmindedly tossing ingredients into her own pot without even looking at them. Despite Drif's best help, the potion still came out disgusting and useless.

"Yeesh, that's, uh..." Drif rubbed her neck. "Bad. It's really bad."

"I don't know what I keep doing wrong..." Melona groaned. Drif looked at her sullen face, and suddenly dumped her own mixture, flipping her hat and pulling and preparing a number of strange ingredients into her pot at lightning speed, creating a glowing green liquid.

"Uh, Drif...?" Melona asked, tapping on her shoulder. It was no good, Drif was practically on another planet when she was like this, completely consumed by her work. Drif dropped a few more ingredients in, yanked a hair from Melona's head suddenly, and stirred, a small poff! resounding as the mixture settled, the end result not dissimilar in appearance to glow-stick fluid.

"Done!" Drif said, wiping her brow. She whipped an empty vial from her cape and filled it before holding it in front of Melona. "Drink up!"

"Drif, I've told you before, I don't want to test your potions anymore-"

"Ohoho, this isn't a test!" Drif smiled, "Because I know it'll work! There's nothing potions can't fix!"

"What is it supposed to do?" Melona asked, trying to buy time for herself.

"It'll help you! Now drink! Drink! Drink!"

Melona took the vial and frowned, looking it over. Drif was... unreliable when it came to experiments, but she was pretty consistent when she knew what she was doing, and she sounded pretty confident about this...

Before Melona could change her mind, she quickly drank down the liquid. It was completely tasteless, but left a strange tingle as it went down her throat, goosebumps forming on her skin. A chill went down her spine, and a dizziness washed over her. Melona stumbled, holding her head, when suddenly...
