Probably the best case scenario.

Melona stood back up, a confident look on her face.

"Germ," she said.

Drif nodded a bit, half-grasping at what Melona was talking about. "You mean the Alarune germ?" It didn't take that much guesswork to deduce that. Alarune germ was a common, potent ingredient in health potions. It was only a small part of the seed, but--

Melona and spoke before Drif could finish her thought. "Yeah," she said, then continued in a rapid-fire patter. "I added it in too quickly. The proteins must have denatured, and the biomantic field must have collapsed and gotten corrupted. That explains the rotting meat smell. I can't salvage the health potion, but I bet if I get some bone powder I could make a decent Draught of False Life, or if I get some tea leaves, there's--"

Drif raised her hands, trying to get Melona to slow down. "I--Mel, yeah, that's all true, but how'd you guess all that?"

Drif would have been offended if she hadn't come to that conclusion herself. "I don't think so, but maybe?" She looked back down at her cauldron as well. "The color's right. Normally if you screw this kinda potion up it doesn't glow as much." She looked up at Melona. "Maybe you're allergic to one of the ingredients? That's not unheard of, and I mean, if your immune system is acting up, that might change how the potion acted."

"Could be." Melona's speech was beginning to slow down again, but even her confused expression seemed to be more self-assured than it normally was. Drif could swear that her eyes were sparkling. "But I don't really have any allergies that I can think of."

"Weird." Drif could feel something amiss, but wasn't sure what. "Maybe--
