"How would you feel if I granted you your freedom?" Robert asked.
Jeffrey's eyes bulged. "My freedom?"
"Yes, your freedom," said Robert. "You've been loyal to my family for a long time, ever since we were children. Your work has always been good, I trust you with the house and a lot of things."
"Where would I go?" Jeffrey asked.
"Wherever you wanted," Robert said. "If you want to stay here, you'd be paid a decent wage, just doing the same things your been doing. If you want to live in the city, I got a cousin that could help you during your transition from Slave to Domesticated. If you want to live in the Wilds, I'm sure that John could teach you the skills you need for that. If you want to travel, we can set something up. I can even see to it that you and your line is considered Protected, in that, if someone tried to sell you or your family, I'd get First Dibs. Of course, if you still want to remain a slave, for now at any rate, that's your choice."
"That's quite the offer," said Jeffrey, as he looked at John.
John looked at him, saying nothing. It would take something special for Livestock to be declared Free.
"Can I think about it?" he asked.
Robert smiled. "All the time in the world. But, I'd prefer to know by tomorrow night so that I can set things up."
"Thank you for letting me know," said Jeffrey. There was a smile upon his face as he left the hill.
