Steven walked into the store just before the start of the shift. As he entered the front of the building he practically ran into Donna the supervisor.
"Careful Steven," she said noticing the huge grin plastered across his face.
"I'm sorry Donna my mind was elsewhere." Even though he sounded apologetic the smile remained.
"You seem very chipper today."
Steven put his index finger to his chin, making himself look thoughtful. "I guess, I am."
Donna's expression changed to one of suspicion. "At the start of a shift? Why?"
Steven shrugged his shoulders. "I have no idea. Maybe the planets are in alignment or something."
"Well, you can start on stacking today."
"Right you are Soup." This was his nickname for Donna she found somewhat annoying.
She was about to walk off when he outstretched his arm to stop her. "I'm supposed to be having a meeting with Emma today."
"Yes, I know about your work performance review meeting."
"Any idea when it will be?" He asked sounding a little too enthusiastic.
"I can't say exactly. You know Emma is very busy, she has a lot of responsibilities. Why are you so interested?"
"I'm not," he said, realising he'd went too far. He hoped his eager attitude hadn't given away that he saw Emma as more than a manager. He'd been secretly crushing on her since they'd met. "I was just curious." He tried to sound as nonchalant as possible.
"I'm sure you'll be summoned to the office at the appropriate time." Donna was being as non-committal as she normal was.
Steven nodded just before there was a quiet bang and he disappeared in a puff of smoke.
Donna coughed a little as she breathed in some of the smoke. She looked around to see Andrea standing behind her with her eyes opened wide. "Did you see that?" Andrea asked.
"I guess Steven is doing magic tricks now. He really tries too hard to impress us."
The older woman looked around. "But where did he go?"
"If he knows what's good for him, he's gone to stack shelves," Donna said curtly before walking off.
Andrea stared at the empty space previously occupied by Steven.
