The town where Leon started his journey was small and lacked a Pokemon Professor, but it was possible to acquire a trained starter or egg from the Pokemon Center for a small fee. Fortunately, he had a very loving and thoughtful mother, which called the Pokemon Center for a starter. She didn't request a typical starter, and since she requested to be delivered as soon as possible he would get the first Pokemon that a League registered Breeder would have available.
Riolu was the Pokemon that Leon received, and the little bipedal jackal was so cute, especially since the Pokemon was just a little taller than his knees. He swore he got diabetes the moment the little jackal hugged his leg and looked up with those big red eyes. He also received his Pokedex, extra PokeBalls, and his trainer license. On a side note, he chose a name for the little jackal, Luca, and the Pokemon liked.
The trainer and starter departed from the town and wandered the wild for about a month, mostly training, and once Leon felt that Luca was strong enough they headed for the next town. With a backpack full of supplies, which was easier than it looked since this world seemed to run on "game logic", and it was basically a Bag of Holding. His only limitations were the items present in the store, money, and an arbitrary number of slots for each item, which could hold multiple of the same item, but he had yet to find the limit.
Much like in the games, Leon could check what he had on the Pokedex, and he wasn't sure if this applied to everyone, or if it just applied to him, but he didn't want to make the assumption he was a "player" in a game world.
