Carly arrived at cheer camp the next day. Rachel, Jamie, and Amanda were all so tall and sexy. They were what cheerleaders were supposed to be! Carly looked in the mirror every day to see her modest 5’1” frame and A-cup breasts only to wish she looked more like the other girls. At least she was more blessed than Emily. That girl had absolutely nothing in the looks department.
Emily had looked just the slightest bit taller yesterday, however. And she had tiny little bumps in her bra where there had been pretty much nothing the day before. The girl was probably just stuffing Kleenex into her bra, Carly decided. As modest as they were, that much growth didn’t happen in one night.
Carly saw Rachel do a double take at something behind her, so she turned. There was Emily. Wow! Her face was looking a little better. It seemed clearer and brighter than yesterday. Were her legs longer? Carly was pretty sure that they were. Her breasts filled out her sports bra even more than yesterday. Those might even be as big as Carly’s!
As Emily approached, Carly’s stomach sank as she looked… up an inch to meet Emily’s eyes. Emily smiled broadly. “Good morning, Carly!” she said, then bounded off to join the trio of prettier girls.
Carly was stunned. How had this happened? In one night she had gone from an inch shorter to an inch taller than her? And just as busty? That wasn’t possible, was it? Clearly, it was!
Anger surged through Carly. She was the ugliest and smallest of the cheerleaders now?!? How dare this little runt do this do her! She ran up to Emily and slapped her, ready to fight. Emily looked shocked, but Jamie and Amanda pulled each of the smaller girls away from each other before anything more could happen.

As Amanda pulled her away from Carly, Emily tried to wrap her mind around the sudden turn of events. Why had Carly attacked her? Emily tried to put a lid on her anger as she worked to understand what the other girl must be feeling. If she were Carly, she would probably be upset at being passed too. But would she slap the other girl? Call her names? No, on both counts.
Carly was a bitch, Emily decided. Emily couldn’t wait to read another story from The Burgeoning Book and leave her even further behind.
As Amanda reprimanded both of them and told them they would be kicked off the squad if they did anything like that again, Emily resolved to try to beat Carly at all of today’s exercises.
Emily put her full focus on learning the moves that Amanda was demonstrating to them. She emphasized every movement and nailed every turn. Amanda even complimented her once today! That had never happened before.
Carly, however, just seemed to give her an angry glare every time Emily looked her way.
Finally, it was time for burpees. This was the moment of camp that Emily always dreaded. Today, however, she was feeling stronger than usual. She looked over to Carly. She could beat that girl today and finish all thirty burpees before Carly could. She had never even completed all thirty before, but today would be the day… she just knew it!
One… two… three… four…
Emily looked over to Carly. She was a half-burpee ahead of her.
...15… 16… 17…
Emily looked over. Was she ahead? She wasn’t sure. She redoubled her efforts.
...28… 29… 30!
Emily jumped up to finish the final burpee, gasping for breath. She looked over. Carly was still down, struggling to push off the ground for her last one. She had done it!!! She beat Carly and finished all of her burpees for the first time ever!!! Amanda came over and said, “Nice job, Em! I’ve never seen you get all of your burpees before!”
Emily beamed with pride. She smiled beatifically when her mom came to pick her up.
“Wow! It looks like someone had a good day at camp today!” her mother said.
Emily nodded excitedly. She pulled out her phone and texted all of her friends. She couldn’t wait to share this feeling with them.
When she got home, she anxiously read another story until her friends arrived. She stood on the tape measure and marked her height. When she turned around, she saw it…

“Hell, yeah!” she said out loud just before the doorbell rang. She ran downstairs to greet her friends.
