Chapter #3

A Lad's Last Hurrah

by: Elusive Wordsmith Author IconMail Icon
"Soon you will be man, Enrique."

Enrique Vega rolled his eyes. "Yes, padre."

His father was repeating this talk more and more frequently as Enrique's thirteenth birthday approached. In the Vega family one's ascribed roles were deeply ingrained in everything the family did. As the oldest, Enrique had suffered through various talks with his parents about what it meant to be a young man, the older brother. What was expected of him, what he would become one day. His own life, having a job and family. More worringly, Enrique suspected that his father was even going to set him down for that Talk very soon.

Ambitions and traditions that were too much for the currently twelve Enrique. He felt that he rarely got as many chances to be a kid as his friends with less austere parents. Enrique was expected to be groomed, polite, to never talk back to his folks and focus on the important things in life. Many of his toys were taken away or passed down to his sister, a sister who could still get away with childish antics. He couldn't have as much fun as his friends with more open minded parents.

Although he dreaded his upcoming maturity, for how his father put it, Enrique was allowed to ask for whatever he wanted for his birthday celebration. A reasonable birthday, rather.

Which Enrique feared he would never be able to convince his padre of having his thirteenth birthday at Gerbert Gerbil & the Cosmic Crew.

Enrique could still vividly remember the first birthday he attended there, his friend's 11th. To Enrique, and all of his friends at the time, Gerbet's was the most fantastic place could be. A restaurant filled with games and space themed decor, complete with the mind blowing mascots that moved about in robotic performances. Enrique remembered having the time of his life there.

And he could also remember his padre's disapproving eye. His father didn't understand the frivolity of a place like Gerbert's. He was very straightforward. Sometimes Enrique thought that padre had not had any childhood to speak of. Enrique's following exposure to Gerbert's was limited since that party, again for the importance of being the oldest child weighing him down. It made the restaurant quite the forbidden fruit in Enrique's upbringing. He felt that if he could have one last hurrah, one time he could be a kid before he was meant to mature quickly, he would be more accepting of his parents' teachings.

How to broach the proposal of his birthday, though, was the real sticking point.
