Enrique could already feel his words trail off. His strict father was giving him a severe look over the kitchen table that Saturday morning. Mr. Vega had to work most weekends, although the children could enjoy time off from school. Enrique had hoped that catching his father at the brief morning time would help his approach.
"I would like to go to Gerbert Gerbil's."
His padre frowned into his breakfast. "That is hardly the place for a young man like you to be."
"OOooh, Gerbert Gerbil's!" Enrique's young sister Mercedes hopped in her seat. "Por favor, padre, can I go to Gerbert's too!!"
Enrique winced at Mercedes' interjection. She was about to blow it for him. Mercedes, plump and dimpled 'little' Mercedes received all the attention and freedoms Enrique felt he had been denied. In the Vega family it seemed that the sister did not have to mature as quickly as the brother. She could on spoiling from not only their parents but abuelos and other family relations.
Mr. Vega looked critically between his two children, Enrique feared what his reaction would be. Finally he spoke. "You may take Mercedes to the gerbil place."
Enrique was crestfallen. Of course a 'childish' place like Gerbert's was only appropriate for children like his sister. He hated been shackled to Mercedes as her chaperone.
His father continued. "If you take your responsibility seriously, we may talk about your celebration."
Enrique nodded. Although inwardly he had dark thoughts about his sister ruining his chance to ask his father about the party directly.
"Darse prisa, hermano!" Mercedes had eagerly rushed ahead to the door of Gerbert Gerbil & the Cosmic Crew, pudgy knees kicking up the skirt of her dress.
"Hold on!" Enrique called out, left chaining their bikes to the bike rack outside. He sighed. It was almost worse than not getting his thirteenth birthday as he wanted; a day having to mind Mercedes at Gerbert Gerbil's. He chance for his own party weighed down by having to cater to the whims of his sister. And Mercedes could get quite loud when things weren't going her way.
