Something else if you want something new.

What if this whole rebellion was a plan from an alien race that collects the heads of anyone in any planet? They usually collect only a town size. Pretty much one day everybody found their heads floating away from their bodies and ends up being abducted. From then on, your character is a disembodied head on a galactic adventure. Either the head is sold to as a pet in another planet, a slave in manual labor, a rebel fighter who ends up there by accident, or a chosen one from a prophecy. You get to decide unless you want a new concept all together.
