Chapter #3

Telegram from a Friend Long Forgotten!

by: Bobo the Hobo Author IconMail Icon
"Telegram for the Carlyle-Tyler house!"

Zack stared blankly at the tiny little man in the red valet uniform. He looked like Abu from Aladdin. Right down to the short stature and tussled hair. He was this scrawny little guy, pale as could be, with a little crop of brown hair up top beneath a pillbox hat. It took literally every ounce of willpower he had not to bust out laughing once he realized what was going on.

"Are you serious?" His face faltered, showing a smile, "You're kidding me, right?"

"Who is it, sweetie?"

Alice came into the living room, drying her hair with a white towel. She had thrown on some of Zack's old pajamas. Damn.

"We have a telegram?"

It sounded more like a question that Zack was asking. But it was weird! Almost nobody knew them in Abercrombie. Who could have possibly known where they lived, outside of maybe their parents? And even then, it wasn't like either of them were going to spring for a telegram. Alice's mom was too chintzy, and much more preferred to do her nagging where her tone could be appreciated and feared. And Zack's mom ws old school, but not that old school.

"They still do those?" Alice asked with an optimistic glee as she bounced over to the front door, "What's it say? Or... is that the thing where we need to know morse code or...?"

"I-It's like a letter..." The little guy said skittishly, "It's a little old fashioned, yeah, but... hey, fella's gotta eat, right?"

Zack and Alice took the letter from the valet's hand. It was an austere looking thing—with artificially yellowed edges and printed on really nice, thick paper. It was sealed (sealed!) with wax, with an emblem made up of a stylized S and W. It pained Alice to open something so beautiful, so she urged Zack to open it gently...

Dearest Alice,

One, this letter's from Sam. Sam Wilsey—you do still remember me, right? We haven't seen each other for so long, I was afraid your blonde ass would forget about me! Two, sorry about the valet. I figured it might be a little weird, but hey, it's all about presentation, right?

Which brings me to my next point:

I'm writing you because I saw that you moved into town a couple weeks ago, and wanted to invite you over to my place. We're, like way overdue for a reunion. As you can probably tell by the valet, a lot has changed for me. So get your ass over to my house this weekend and we'll catch up! Bring your man if you want! Trust me, there's plenty of room to keep him occupied while we catch up.

Kidding!

Love ya,
Sam

PS: don't feel obligated to tip the valet. I already took care of that.
