Chapter #4

Rendezvous with an Old Friend...

by: Bobo the Hobo Author IconMail Icon
hat weekend, Zack and Alice headed out.

The ride to chateau Wilsey was a long one. She lived just outside the city limits of Abercrombie. But Abercrombie was a big place. It was a really scenic route, with lots of flatlands and fields. Plenty of wildlife all around. Even still, it took about an hour and a half to get from their apartment complex to "almost there." And all the while, the only thing on Zack's mind was...

"So who's this Sam girl anyway?"

Zack could help but find himself a little perturbed by the fact that he was only just now hearing about one of his girlfriend's closest friends. Granted, they hadn't talked much about her life at Buttercombe. She had been much more enthralled learning about Daven's Port, and he had been way too focused on falling in love with her. After two years of dating, Zack only really knew about Megan and Ronnie—two of Alice's oldest friends. But he hadn't heard much about Sam; or if he did, he couldn't remember it.

"She's an old friend." Alice said definitively, fiddling with her smartphone, "She was friends with me, Megan and Ronnie when I went to Buttercombe. We were in the same grade—I'm pretty sure that I've told you about her before."

"I mean yeah..." Zack chuckled nervously, "But like... you know, what's she like?"

Alice seemed to ponder this for a minute. Like she was asking herself this for the first time herself.

"I don't know... she swore a lot." Alice said nonchalantly, seemingly oblivious to Zack's suspicions, "Sam and I were roommates after Megan graduated, so I guess you could say that we were pretty close. I used to help her with her homework and she used to help me keep those prissy white girls off of me. Sam was pretty tough."

"Uh-huh..."

"Yeah she was this really deep writer. I remember she used to write all this great poetry." Alice said before she started laughing, "I remember one time I found her journal of poems and she—snort!—she got this horrified look on her face!"

Alice fell into a giggling fit.

"I swear to effing God if you tell anybody I'll effing kill you!" Alice recreated the scene, poorly, as she laughed, "I teased her so much for that. I don't know why she hid them. They were really good!"

Zack's supsicions were not abated. It seemed so odd that he had never heard of this Sam woman. Not that he expected Alice to tell her everything about her life (there were a few seedy details that he himself had tactfully left out!) but for them to be so close—close enough for her to send her a valet. It made Zack a little on edge.

The rest of the ride was mostly uneventful, until eventually their sputtering sedan came into view of a large mansion, out in the middle of the fields.

Despite the oddity of it all, the building was definitely organic. It didn't stand out like a sore thumb, despite the fact that it was literally a giant mansion in the middle of flatlands. They could see a big lake nearby, and there were lots of domestic plants nearby. A cobblestone driveway led them up to a gate, which sealed them off from the interior yard.

"Um... hi?" Zack pushed the button, "We're uh... we're here to see Sam?"

There was a pause.

"Come right in then."

A few seconds later, the gate doors opened, allowing the silver sedan to sputter on through. Zack and Alice were amazed by the tender love and care that the yard were given, the beautiful sights as flora crawled up beautiful sculptures and were carved into magnificent topiary. A few shirtless, sweaty folks were tending to the impressive garden as they passed by. They gave friendly enough waves as Zack and Alice passed.

"Wow." Zack whistled, his suspicions abated momentarily abated, "Buttercombe girls really are rich."

"Yeah but..." Alice's blonde brow furrowed in confusion, "Sam's not..."

Another look at the garden. The gardeners. The gate. The intercom.

"At least, she didn't used to be..."

***

Alice and Zack were thrust inside the stately Wilsey manor. Their coats were taken, and they were shown to the sitting room. One of many sitting rooms, presumably. And that's when they met her.
