"Zach, can you help me zip up the rest of this dress? I can't seem to reach the zipper," Alice called out from the bathroom. Zach did a short jog from their living room to their bedroom to go help his girlfriend finish getting ready, wheezing a little bit as he made the short jog (something felt really off, but he couldn't figure out what). While the party at Seth and Tess's wasn't a fancy party, Alice being the fashionista she is decided to wear a casual dress she had been working on for one of her classes at the college. However, as Zach observed when he tried to get the zipper to meet and go up, she may not have done her measurements correctly.
"Honey, I don't think you got your measurements correct, I can't even get the zipper to meet in the back," he told her. He could see her scrunch up her nose in the mirror, the look she always gets when she's trying to solve a problem.
"No, I did it right. It was fine when I tried it on last week," Alice replied. "Maybe if I suck it in it'll work?" Zach tried the zipper again and still got nothing.
"Nope, still the same result." Alice sighed and stopped trying to suck in her stomach... wait, when did that get there, Zach said in his head. He hadn't noticed until now the bulge that was at present keeping Alice's dress tightly on her body despite it not being zipped up. He could even see the indent from her naval through the dress it was tight enough on her. It looked as if, much like their neighbors, she had gained some college weight, and by the look on her face she hadn't realized that until now either.
"Zach, I think we've both gotten a bit lazy with our diets, I think we need to try to eat healthier more now. I mean look at us, we've both gained weight in just 2 weeks of being here!" Alice exclaimed. Zach looked at her confused. "Don't tell me you haven't noticed this development in your gut," she scolded as she stuck a finger into his stomach, which shocked him with how far in it sunk. He hadn't noticed his stomach until then, and then noticed too how his shirt clung tightly to his body (and not in a good way).
"You're right, we need to stop this. I swear, I've just been too tired lately to go to the gym after work! I don't know why all the sudden that's how I've been, I've never had that problem before," Zach said with a slightly despondent tone.
"Me too, I have no idea why I just haven't been able to get motivated enough to go," Alice replied. "But there's nothing we can do about that now, let me go change so we can get to the party." She quickly walked away, and as she walked Zach noticed a slight jiggle in her body that he hadn't seen in a while from her. She changed into a pair of leggings and a cute tunic instead of the dress (though this new outfit still clung more tightly to her new curve than it used to) and they walked down the hall to go to the party, with Zach finally realizing what had felt off when he was jogging to the bathroom earlier: his stomach bounced now too, and the wheezing was because he had gotten so out of shape so quickly.
They walked right into Seth and Tess's place, not needing to knock since the door was wide open and people were bustling about in their apartment. They started looking around for their hosts, not seeing them anywhere but noticing a lot of large bodies in the apartment. There wasn't a single person who didn't look at least chubby, most of them bordering on overweight or downright fat. As Zach and Alice made their way to the kitchen they continued to bump into wide hips and round bellies, all of whom seemed unaccustomed to the sensation. They finally spotted the couple in the kitchen talking to another couple, but their hosts blended in better than anticipated.
It seemed that in the two weeks Zach and Alice had lived in Abercrombie their neighbors had practically ballooned, with the beer gut Seth once had now looking more like a 25 week pregnant belly. His whole body really looked softer, with his arms being tightly packed into his t-shirt and his softened chest noticeable through the shirt as well. And Tess, whose short stature showed her weight more in the first place, looked even bigger, with her hips flaring out significantly and her thighs touching all the way down to her knees, looking fairly chaffed from rubbing together in areas not covered by her shorts. Her face was even rounding out with her cheeks now constantly looking as if she had something in her mouth (which, in all fairness, she usually did). The couple standing next to them were even larger, probably outweighing their friends by at least 100 pounds.
"Hi, so glad you two could make it! Let me introduce you to Maria and Darren, they were the first ones to welcome us to town just like we were the first to welcome you! Darren's also at the college while Maria runs a restaurant downtown!" Tess excitedly babbled. Maria and Darren conversed for a couple minutes with Zach and Alice then left the party. Zach and Alice stayed in the kitchen for the time being, not super comfortable socializing with so many people they didn't know. After a little while Tess came and dragged Alice away to join a group of the women chatting in a corner, leaving Zach with Seth and a group of guys.
"Alice, I see you and Zach have really taken to the town," one of the women said to her. She nodded.
"I mean I really like the college and there are definitely some cute shops downtown, but I'm still getting to know the place," she replied. The women all laughed.
"No, when I say 'taken to the town' I mean you're starting to be shaped like the rest of us! I didn't think I ever would when I moved here a year ago but the weight started piling on immediately and I just couldn't bring myself to do anything about it. Everyone else seemed unbothered by it so why should I have let it bother me, am I right?" said one of the women. The rest nodded.
"I swear, it must be something in the water! Seth and I have only been here a month and we've both already put on 40 pounds and neither of us seems to be able to do anything about it, not that we've really tried..." Tess trailed off. Alice raised her eyebrow, concerned about what would happen to her and Zach after too long here.
Zach was having a similar discussion with the guys. When he and Seth walked over to the group of men they didn't do a traditional greeting, they belly bumped him instead, something he found quite odd. One of the biggest guys noticed the quizzical look on his face.
"Dude, some people here are so large they can barely lift their arms or their arms can't reach past their stomach, belly bumping is a much easier greeting! Plus, it's way more fun, although your belly isn't quite yet large enough to appreciate it, but give it another month or so and then you'll see," the man said. Zach dropped his jaw, that seemed absurd! Not just the whole concept of the belly bump, but also that he'll soon be large enough to understand it.
"Trust me, it takes no time to put on weight in this town. I moved here a year and a half ago a super slim 150, now I'm bordering 400 on a good day!" the gut laughed and the rest of the guys chuckled too.
"Yeah man, I mean you met me two weeks ago and I was not nearly this big! I put on 40 pounds this past month, and it looks like you're on track to do the same. It takes some adjusting and learning how to move at the larger size, but it's actually pretty freeing to not worry about what you put into your body and just let nature do what it does. Now, you have to join our fantasy football league…" Seth continued going on about fantasy football with the guys, eventually roping Zach into their league. But Zach couldn't get past the idea of everyone seeming to gain so much weight upon arrival... it all seemed too odd, yet he didn't know what to do about it.
