As you was about to turn the page to read more of the book, mom opened the front door. She instantly saw what was in your hands and instantly paled. "You didn't open that thing?" she asked in a shaky voice.
"No. Why?" you asked seeing mom's unease. Why would she be nervous about some old book?
Mom bit her lip. "It's your sister's birthday present."
"Why would you leave it out in the open where anyone could see it? Another thing mom, no offense, but why would someone like Mel want something like this? She isn't into fantasy. Even at the movies"
"Because she has some rather, how can I put it, unstable abilities. Trust me on this John. I suggest you never ask what those abilities are" mom said.
"Mom? What are you talking about?"
"What I'm talking about is magical powers. This is your last chance to walk away before your curiosity becomes your undoing" mom said seriously.
"Magic? I'll play along. If Mel is miss teenage ditzy witch, then it means you are one as well" you scoffed.
Mom frowned. "I guess a demonstration is in order. If I do, promise me that you won't read or go searching for that book."
"Whatever" you said, as mom nodded gravely. Seconds later, a flame shot out of her right hand.
"How are you doing that?" you demanded.
"I have powers, John, but this is not your demonstration. Something 'impossible' should suffice..." mom said
