"Oh Matilda, not you, too!" the fairy cried in distress, stopping abruptly on the path.
Laura stopped just as quickly, and Steven had to grab Laura's shoulders and fight for his balance so he didn't send them both to the forest floor.
"What's going on?" Steven asked.
Laura could hear the low, menacing growl and see the flash of white fangs. All she could do was point to the huge black and brown beast on the path ahead of them. Steven took Laura by the shoulders and slowly moved her back down the path the way they had come.
They could hear the fairy's voice coming back to them. "I know you're not happy about it, Matilda, but did you really have to scare the living daylights out of those poor people? Tsk, Tsk."
Laura glanced back at the fairy, and saw that she was hovering just above nose height above the biggest Rottweiler she had ever seen. She had her hands on her hips and was looking like she wanted to launch into a long lecture. The Rottweiler broke into a big, doggie grin.
"What did you do that old Crone to end up a Rottweiler, Matilda?" The big dog barked at her, then jumped up, snapping playfully at the fairy's feet.
"Eek! Just for that...," she waved her tiny magic wand, and the Rottweiler became covered in pink sparkles. "There. Now no one will take you seriously."
The fairy stuck her tongue out at the big dog, then called to Laura and Steven, "It's okay, this is my sister, Matilda. She was cursed by the Crone, too, that's why she's a big dog right now. She won't hurt you."
The big dog sat on the path and offered her paw to shake. Laura couldn't help but laugh. A huge, pink sparkly Rottweiler with a big, fierce growl wanted to shake hands.
