Early into the celebration, well before the alcohol claimed Total Breakdown's speech and motor skills, the normally sober band felt the consequences of their inexperience burning in their cheeks. It was that state of inebriation where drunks think they have good ideas, even a sober audience of strangers thinks they thought it through, and they usually get approval to set it in motion, but the reality is that it's a terrible idea they would never so much as concoct sober and their friends would have to be stupid or drunk to go along with this.
"Girls!" Crystal called, bringing everyone to attention. "The hell kinda celebration is this?"
"A good one!" Jen called grinning and preparing another toast.
"Wrong!"
"What?" Aimee said.
"Name one thing wrong with it?" Allison continued.
"How about no friends congratulating us with honest opinions and preparing to say good-bye as the scouts convince the labels to make us stars?"
All three girls arched their eyebrows in silent agreement. For a party, this was rather tame. They could have fun by themselves, but as the saying goes, "the more the merrier." Besides, four people could hardly comment absolutely on the entire audience's reactions. Even if the songs were perfectly performed, the on-stage presence is just as important for concerts, and the audience response is critical. And it wasn't like this was the first spontaneous invites the band's ever sent to their friends.
"Y'all know the play!" Allison declared.
Each girl quickly whipped out her cell phone and sent a mass message. After the third or fourth party they fell into suddenly and the overlap of their contacts became apparent, Crystal proposed they work out a system for invites. Now their mutual friends were divided between them, ensuring no one got multiple messages and they didn't waste some of their minutes. They'd even worked out the message:
Party at Aimee's! Admission fee is two bottles of booze or a bag of food!
As a result of this system, they neglected to add a detail about this being only close friends and those who attended the concert, or that they shouldn't spread the message. They probably would have thought about it before they pressed send, or maybe just after and be forced to send an edit, but the alcohol took that notion off the table. Instead, the word flooded the whole town at break-neck speeds, and liquor stores found their registers filling quickly.
While the overflow was initially daunting, Total Breakdown, now in full stagger, decided to roll with it. It wasn't their first wild party, though certainly the first they've hosted. How much different could it be as hostesses? Plus, if the night was merciful, they could give an encore and relive the magical concert. The more the merrier!
Of course, the noise consideration had escaped them, and some guests were unquestionably not old enough to drink legally. The two details together made for an easy arrest, and possible lawsuits. But that was for later, after the date rolled over and the neighbors' patience wore out. For now, the girls found themselves about to compound their problems.
