Ninja and materia thief extraordinaire Yuffie Kisaragi was always known as a bit of a wild card. Even in a team of people brought together by odd circumstances and twists of fate, Yuffie's story behind joining the party was unusual. Defeated and outsmarted, the ninja found herself following Cloud and the others on their journey to save the world. Granted, she initially did so to eventually steal their materia at a later date, but even that ended up with the materia returned and Yuffie still tagging along.
Indeed, Yuffie's biggest failing was likely that she was too confident in her skills. She was certainly no amateur, but she wasn't an absolute master of her craft, and her ego could undermine her skills and lead to mistakes from time to time. These failings had never had any major consequences for the spunky thief (discounting that time she was tied to a giant statue and almost fell to her death, but that wasn't her fault!), and so Yuffie never really seemed to learn the lesson of humility.
