Chapter #3

Mel the 'actress'

    by: Runner Author IconMail Icon
"I was sent to a school that specializes in performance arts. Happy now, John?" Mel snapped. She obviously had enough and headed for the door.

Yeah right you thought. While you knew Mel was very photogenic and did have an interest in acting when she was younger, you doubted that that was the real reason. Especially since Hayley also had her own mystery trip the previous year. "Do you really expect me to believe that?" you demanded.

Mel stopped in the doorway and said in a irritated voice. "Don't come crying to me if you find your information white whale, Ahab Harrison"

You stared at her annoyed, fully understanding her analogy. "I'm not obsessed with this, Melanie!" you shouted at her receding figure. Once alone, you turned to Megan and Harry. "I'm not obsessed. Am I?"

Megan bit her lip. "You are in a way, John."

"I just need to know why. Don't either of you think its strange that two of my sisters go away for a whole year, and don't even mention what they did?" you said.

"I never said it isn't strange. Maybe its something that Mrs H is doing. Like Mel said, she is older than you. Maybe its your turn this year" Megan said, unaware that mom had arrived and had overheard your complaints. Later she called you to her study and almost immediately got straight to the point.

"I know you're feeling frustrated John, but there is a good reason why both Mel and Hayley have kept their secrets" mom said.

"Of course I'm frustrated" you said.

"I realize that. I overheard your conversation with Megan and I've come to the conclusion that maybe I should send you away" mom answered.

"You was listening in?" you grumbled.

"Its not exactly hard, John. Where is the magic book by the way?" mom asked.

"What does that old book have to do with it?" you demanded.

"I can't have it lying around while you're away. Its valuable and I do not want your cousins getting their hands on it" mom said.
