Fairtropolis, California. What could you say about it? It was an expansive city, larger than NYC, split into multiple districts according to their primary businesses. There was the industrial district, which was mainly factories, steel mills, power plants, etc. The entertainment district, comprised of theaters, both movie and stage, restaurants, sporting arenas and the like. There was also the business district, made up mostly of banks, corporate offices, and other such things. Lastly, there was the residential district , where the majority of the city's population lived. It was made up of homes, apartments, some of which were in better neighbourhoods than others.
It was certainly a nice place to visit, but not many would choose to live there. For you see, just like any other city, Fairtropolis had it's fair share of crime. There were gangs infesting the poorer neighbourhoods, the local mafia running prostitution and extortion rackets, and a number of other problems. But it wasn't all bad, thanks to the Union of Heroes, a global organization of superpowered beings dedicated to protecting the innocent and punishing evildoers.
In a quaint little home in this not so quaint city lived Rena Westfall, your typical average nerd. Graduated from the University of California at the top of her class, made the honor roll throughout grade school, and a master of anything electronic. You're probably thinking she must be a doctor, or some sort of scientist. But you would be wrong. For you see, Rena may have been a genius, and could easily have landed some high paying job in a lab or university, but instead, after she graduated, she choose to forsake all that in favor of working in a comic book store.
Why would someone with Rena's intellect work in a comic shop? There were a few reasons, actually. You see, Rena had always been a bit of a tomboy. Ever since she learned to read, Rena loved comics of all kinds. Newspaper comics, horror, mystery, adventure, but by far her favorite was superheros. She even had an entire room in her home that was used solely to store her comic collection and various collectibles she had acquired. If you were to ask her which comic company she preferred, she wouldn't be able to choose. Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, it didn't matter to her, as long as they told a good story.
Another reason was that her boss, Dexter Reed, the owner of the shop, had been good friends with her in school. He was a tall, thin man with short, curly blonde hair and glasses. Rena had just graduated college, and they ran into each other for the first time in years at a coffee shop. After Dexter had told her he now owned a comic shop, and had an opening available, Rena leaped at the chance, and accepted the job. The third reason Rena choose to stay at the shop was because she was a friend, and a great employee, Dexter gave her quite a considerable discount off anything in the store.
The day started out like any other for Rena. She woke up, ate breakfast, took a shower, and prepared for another day at the shop. She wore a plain green sweater, glasses, jeans and white sneakers. She didn't own a car, so she had to ride her bike to work everyday. After locking her bike to a streetlight in front of the shop, she stepped inside and took in a deep breath, inhaling the wonderful smell of new comics. The shelves of the store were lined with various comic books, posters, action figures, trading cards, basically a nerd's paradise. Behind the counter stood Dexter, a warm smile on his face. "Hello Rena." Rena walked up to Dexter and gave him a hug.
"Hi Dex. Anything new today?"
"Nope, nothing today. Hey, did you see the news last night?"
"No, why?"
"Professor Heinous tried to steal all the uranium from the power plant, but Valkyrie stopped him. They broadcast the entire battle on the news."
"Really? Damn it, I missed it! It must have been one hell of a battle."
"It was, though one thing bothers me. These superheroes, why do they always just have the villains arrested, when they know they'll just break out, and they'll just have to fight them again? Why not just snap the bad guy's neck and be rid of them?"
"The same reason why Batman doesn't just kill the Joker. If they killed them, then they would be no better than the criminals."
"Anyway, you take the counter, I'm gonna do inventory."
Rena sat in the chair behind the checkout counter, paging through a Wonder Woman story she had brought with her. As she read, Rena imagined herself as a superhero in the story in place of Wonder Woman. It had always been her secret desire to be a superhero herself, ever since she was little. But she knew that could never happen, because if comics had taught her anything, it was that in order for a woman to be a superhero, she had to have two things: super powers, and breasts that are at least the size of her head, and Rena had neither.
But little did she know that today, she would get her wish. Today was the day her life would change forever. The question is, how?
Option 1: Rena gains her powers in some sort of accident. Maybe, she gets exposed to radiation, falls into nuclear waste, or whatever means the author may decide.
Option 2: Rena is selected by some sort of cosmic force/god to be the newest defender of justice on earth. Thus Cleavage Cat is born!
Option 3: Rena is abducted by government agents to be a test subject for experiments that end up giving her superpowers.
