Patrick, Nick, and Nate

"Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you!!"

Patrick sat at the patio table as his mother stepped out of the kitchen holding the cake, loaded with twenty-four candles, twelve bunched together per side. She sat the cake in front of Nick and Nate, Patrick's twin brothers, who both looked at it eagerly, ready to blow out their set of candles.

"Happy Birthday Nick and Naaaate!"

Of course, Patrick knew that Nate and Nick weren't his biological brothers, but instead had been adopted when he was five. It was fairly obvious; both boys had red hair and pale skin, while Patrick and his parents had a more tan complexion with darker hair. He vaguely remembered the two of them coming home as babies, but since he knew them from such a young age, he figured it was more or less how any other set of brothers would behave, especially twins. He would give them a hard time and they would gang up on him, but overall they got along fairly well, and the fact that they weren't actually related by blood didn't seem to matter much.

"Happy Biiirthday to yoooooou!"

Today, the were celebrating their twelfth birthdays, a day that both of them had looked forward to for weeks. Though their parents had offered to throw them a party, they declined, instead wanting to just have a simple family gathering with none of their friends. Patrick figured it was just as well; though he got along okay with the twins, the kids their age that they hung out with were another story altogether.

The song had been finished for several seconds, and Patrick and his parents watched in anticipation, though Nick and Nate seemed to be taking their sweet time blowing out the candles. Finally, impatience got the best of Patrick. "Well? What are you waiting for?" he asked.

Grinning, Nick and Nate replied by finally blowing out their candles, each getting them all out with little effort. Patrick's parents applauded, and, though he rolled his eyes, he smiled, clapping along with them.

"So what'd you each wish for?" he asked as his mom started to cut the cake.

"Wish?" Nate asked, a grin still on his face.

"Yeah, didn't you guys make a wish?" Patrick said, giving him a questioning look. "That's what you're supposed to do on your birthday, ya know!"

Nick adjusted his glasses, the one obvious identifying trait that separated him from Nate. "Well, I don't think it matters what we wished. The two of us already know what's going to come true."

This confused Patrick even more. "What? What are you talking about?"

The twins exchanged glances, looking as if they knew something Patrick didn't. "Well, let's just say that this birthday is something special," Nate finally replied. "It's about time we grow up, don't you think?"

Patrick squinted his eyes and tilted his head. "I guess. I mean, twelve isn't exactly teenager, yet, but you're getting close. Don't worry about becoming an adult too quickly."

Nick giggled. "No, that's not quite what we meant. Just... just wait. You'll see what we're talking about."

"Yeah," Nate nodded in confirmation. "Real soon."

As the two of them dived into the pieces of cake in front of them, Patrick felt a shiver run down his spine. What in the world could they possibly mean?
