"I save my indulging for others," she replied. "I mean, I like to eat just like anyone else, but what makes me really happy is seeing you guys indulge."
"Really?" Evan said, his mouth partially full with cake. Karen thought he looked extra-adorable like that.
"Of course!" Karen scooted a bit closer to Evan so that she was next to him. "Evan, I'm really glad you're here. And I know that things are different at your home, but while you're here, I want you to indulge yourself as much as you can. And I want to help you indulge, too. Think of it like your payment for staying here."
Evan chuckled, licking the remaining food off of his fork. "If I do that, I'll be bigger than Graham when my parents come back!"
The thought of Evan becoming fatter than Graham gave Karen butterflies.
"Well, you've got a long way to go. That boy has about a hundred pounds on you, and he's growing too." If Evan managed to gain even fifty pounds, Karen would consider it a success.
Karen continued, "I don't think you have to worry about outgrowing Graham for a long time, sweetie," she said, giving Evan's belly a gentle pat. "Graham's an expert at indulging. I'm really proud of the progress he's made, especially in the last few years. Erin's not quite there yet, but she's making progress too. I think you should learn from both of them."
Evan thought about it for a few minutes. Then he said, "Can I have another slice of cake?"
Karen smiled warmly. "I'd like that a lot."
In the end, Evan ate two more slices after that, before going to bed. He knew he was being greedy, but knowing it was making Graham's mom happy was enough encouragement to get him to put aside his typical values. And besides, it seemed to be making Graham's mom happy that he was eating.
