Karen proudly looked over the food she had prepared for breakfast. She was no stranger to cooking big morning meals, but today, she had gone all-out, even by Jones family standards. This was a feast. Eighteen eggs, bacon, sausages, muffins, and of course, no breakfast would be complete without a dozen fresh donuts.
It was Evan's first morning living with them; she wanted to give him a taste of what life could be like here. Literally. When she'd heard from Graham that Evan typically didn't eat breakfast, she'd taken it as a personal challenge.
She was just putting the finishing touches on the spread. Natalie was already at the table, eating a muffin - she had always been an early riser, which meant she was also an early eater. If Karen hadn't offered her food to snack on, she would have found something else to eat while she waited.
Karen turned to Natalie. "Honey, could you go get the others and tell them to come down for breakfast?"
Natalie nodded sleepily. She crammed the last bite of muffin into her mouth and headed upstairs.
A few minutes later, Karen heard four sets of footsteps coming down the stairs: round, hungry Natalie, who was visibly eager to start eating, followed by Erin, and last but not least, the two boys.
Evan suddenly noticed the huge amount of food on the table. "Whoa, Ms. Jones, is this food all for us?" he said incredulously.
"Of course! I can't send you guys to school with hungry bellies, can I?"
