Twenty Gets You Plenty?

"I meant to throw in a $1 bill, but I think that was a $20!" Charles peered down into the well, but couldn't see anything.

"So that was an expensive lesson then," said Megan, rolling her eyes.

* * *

They spent the rest of the evening quietly in the apartment they shared, watching the festivities on TV, toasting with sparkling apple juice.

Finally, it was the big moment, and they counted down along with the Times Square crowd as the ball dropped. "10... 9... 8... 7... 6... 5... 4... 3... 2... 1..."

"Happy new year!" shouted someone on TV, but Charles and Megan instead leaned together for a kiss.

They broke apart, and Megan noticed a weird expression on Charles's face. "What's the matter?" she asked.

Charles replied...
