The mother cat screamed. “How could you!? Monster!” She was almost insane with grief and fury, able to watch your belly visibly shrink as you continued digesting your first prey. Her claws wildly, and fruitlessly, swung through the air as the levitation spell denied her any purchase.
You knew that you had to act quickly as the mana you had right now was temporary following the use of Velox Digestum. It was the best spell for regaining mana quickly, but it had three major drawbacks compared to letting nature take its course or using one of the other digestive spells. Right now the concerning part for you was that as soon as your stomach was flat your mana would revert to zero within about 3 seconds.
Seeing the remaining 3 kittens stirring from their mother’s screaming yowls, you cast your strongest ice spell on the mother cat to silence her. It works, suspending her in a block of frosted ice a couple inches thick. But even though you currently have near endless mana, you are still a young and inexperienced mage. Maintaining a spell while casting another requires a fine tuned multitasking concentration that still eludes you. As a result, the levitation spell ends even as the ice spell freezes her and the mother cat crashes into the ground with an ear splitting crash.
The kittens all snap awake and notice their mother’s blue skin and shivering form. They also see your still shrinking stomach and realize one of their sisters is missing. The kittens may be young, but they still had sharp fangs and deadly claws that you can see them preparing.
Furious at yourself, you present them with a savage scrawl. For the moment the mother cat is still incapacitated from the combination of the three spells inflicted on her, but you can’t eat her while the kittens claw at you! Even worse there’s not enough of their sister in your gut to reliably subvert their minds back to sleep, not with your ham fisted skills.
While you consider your short list of bad options, the largest of the kittens jumps at you and claws your arm. You manage a barrier spell, but can feel your mana dip even lower. You cannot afford to defend or to wait. You need to attack and win quickly while you still can!
