It was a last ditch effort to save the relationship, but naturally it came a little bit too late to actually work.
Winning the contest had been a godsend, and Marshall thought a little time away might have gotten their relationship back on track, but he never got to find out. Marshall and Hannah had been engaged, but Hannah had decided to break things off, saying that their problems were a sign that the marriage was a mistake. Marshall was heartbroken at first, but recognized that it was probably for the best. That was thanks to his best friend, Jules, who had taken it upon himself to ensure that Marshall would come out of the breakup stronger.
He'd had enough of his relationships go south to know exactly what Marshall needed after it, and two months later, Marshall and Jules were roommates sharing the same apartment that Marshall had once shared with Hannah. After returning home from work one day, Jules carried the mail into the apartment.
"What's this fancy envelope?" Jules asked as he handed Marshall a stack of mail, with an ornate envelope on top. "Getting invited to some upscale party?"
"Oh god... I forgot about this." Marshall remarked as he took the stack of mail. "I won this contest for an all-expense paid trip to a couples resort that I was going on with Hannah, I figured it might rekindle things... I finalized the booking a few weeks before we broke off the engagement."
"Lucky you!" Jules exclaimed. "Free vacation!"
"Yeah, but it's to a couples resort, I can't go alone, that'd just make me look sad and lonely, and I've got no one to go with!" Marshall retorted.
Marshall hadn't exactly gotten back out into the field after the breakup, despite Jules's numerous attempts to get him out to a bar or a club. But he was patient with his friend, since he knew that the relationship with Hannah had been years long, so he hadn't dated in quite a while.
Jules nodded, before getting an idea.
"Well, why don't you take me?" Jules asked.
"Take you to a couples resort?" Marshall replied. "That's worse than going alone!"
"Think about it, we both get a vacation, you don't waste the vacation and you won't be going alone!"
"But you're a guy!"
"You're telling me this place will discriminate against a gay couple?"
"Of course I'm not saying that. But I booked everything in mine and Hannah's name, I took a whole questionnaire about us, and it's nontransferable. It has to be me and Hannah." Marshall said, opening the envelope. "See?"
Jules looked over the paperwork in the envelope, most of it was general forms with blanks for names, in addition to two airline tickets. After reading through very carefully, Julian handed the paperwork back to Marshall.
"Actually, all it says is that the vacation is for an engaged couple." Jules said. "Doesn't say anything about gender or anything."
"So?"
"So, you could just tell them that we're gay, and you lied when you booked the trip because of discrimination or something. All they're expecting is a couple, right?"
Marshall frowned, he clearly wasn't a fan of the idea, but he had been looking forward to the trip, it was at a beautiful beach resort, and even if it was for couples, it would be fun to get away, besides, Marshall figured that Jules deserved some sort of reward for being such a good friend these last few months.
"Fine." Marshall said. "But I still have a bad feeling about this."
"It'll be fine, bud. Beach resort, here we come!" Jules exclaimed.
