Sky Pirates

Temperance was enjoying the warm after dinner wine and the warmth it brought to her body. The fading sun gave a gentle glow to the landscape below, it almost seemed peaceful but the thief knew the truth of the cruelties of the world below the flying ship. A loud explosion shook the airship drawing her attention but she couldn’t see anything outside her side of the ship to cause the sound. Thankfully, the ship didn’t seem to be crashing to the ground. She saw people gathered around the other side of the ship gasping in horror and she spied what was spreading the fear another ship was approaching with more than a few guns firing.

She moved as quickly as she could to her room but the formal dress wasn’t exactly designed for quick movement so she could get some weapons. Temperance didn’t want to jump ship considering all the valuables she had brought with her, she couldn’t take all of it with her but dealing with pirates who could afford a skyship was risky because of all the skill they had attained in getting that wealth.

The defenses of the ship wouldn’t be enough to hold off the attack of the pirates but it was at least a good sign they weren’t blasting the ship to bits. If she was lucky they would drop the passengers off and just take the goods and the ship. Worse case they take the passengers as prisoners as well for slaves or hostages.

A man stood at the end of the hallway and an evil looking grin formed on his face when he saw her. He approached slowly with his blade drawn, purposely stomping as he walked in an attempt to frighten her. The man looked like an easy target but he would likely have more allies aboard than she could handle so she would have to be careful about her choice. She didn’t like playing a weak woman but it might give her a chance for better treatment or to ambush the man.

Feinting fear Temperance pretended to faint and dropped to the floor keeping a single eyelid partially opened so she could watch the man. The pirate looked stunned at what had happened and paced back and forth debating what to do. He had likely wanted to scare her but was under orders not to hurt anyone so he was debating if he should leave his post or stick around.
