Chapter #2

Summer Job

A note was found on our mailbox - a note, not a letter - that had asked me to babysit a couple of secondary school girls down the street for a pretty nice pay rate. The note said it was from a couple that my mother knew well, and she said I could go ahead, even giving me the spare key she had. It was for the first day of summer vacation: their parents were driving deep downtown to spend the day with some old friends, and they didn't want their daughters feeling neglected or running around the friends' apartment (the latter of which I thought was more likely).

I shot up and threw off the covers, checking the clock as I did. Upon reading the digits, I immediately vented a huge sigh of relief. The clock read 9:45. I didn't have to be at the house until 10:15. It was half an hour away, but the house was literally right down the street. Still, it couldn't hurt to be ready. Slipping on a loose t-shirt and some jogging shorts, and hopped downstairs to find a note for me on the kitchen counter.

Headed out to the new mall, see you tonight! - Mom, the note read. Next to the note was a bowl of cereal and glass of juice. Gotta love my mom.

Another few minutes and I'm out the door, walking towards the house where the neighbors live. To be honest, I was surprised that I got the offer to babysit. One of the girls was thirteen, surely old enough to look after her sister and herself. It's not like the parents were staying out overnight or anything. And why had they left a note on our mailbox instead of just coming and talking to us? It was a mystery, but one I didn't stress too much over.

Soon I'd arrived at the address where I was to babysit. The note had said that they'd be out already and the girls would let me in, but because I had the key I could let myself in. The door gave me no trouble, and inside the house I called out for Clarissa and Claudia, the two girls I was supposed to be watching.
