Chapter #3

Sorry about that

by: The Warden Author IconMail Icon
I was surprised when I saw a man, presumably their father, sitting at the kitchen table and staring at me like I had a third head.
"Who are you?" he asked.
"The babysitter...?"
"Babysitter? What do you mean babysit-"
"I am so sorry!" A voice cut him off, as a woman, presumably the mother, rushed down the stairs with a wallet in hand. "I know I offered you a job, but our friends called us last minute to tell us they got sick and they don't want us to catch what they have."
I lowered my head in disappointment and let out a sigh.
The man looked at his wife. "Honey, why'd you hire a babysitter? Clarissa is thirteen! She can take care of the two of them."
"Well I didn't want them feeling neglected!"
"More like you're a big case of worry wart."
"Shush you!" She turned back to me. "Listen, I'm really sorry about this. Here, I offered you a fair pay check and it's not right to get your hopes up like that." She rummaged through the wallet and gave me the amount I was supposed to be paid. "Again, I'm really sorry about this."
"It's no problem. Sorry that your friends got sick."
"You're sweet. Thank you. Please have a nice day!"
"You too!" I then went outside and started walking back to my house, wondering what to do now. She had given me quite a bit of money. I could go to the nearby pool. The lifeguard there, Liz, was rumored to be super ticklish and often let people tickle her since she seemed to like it. There was also a boys vs girls paintball arena in the nearby woods. Apparently it was a tradition there for every member of the winning team to pick someone from the losing team and they'd have to do what the winner says for 24 hours. Finally, if I wandered around the town a bit, I was sure to run into one of my friends at some point and I could treat them to dinner or buy a new video game for them to play or something. After contemplating for a few minutes, I decided to...
