It was a brisk October evening but the theater was warm. Daniel sat uncomfortably in his seat next to his friend Scott. They were about to watch some hypnotist show or something and Dan was dreading it. He hated this cheesy kind of thing, people pretending that they were being mind-controlled into acting like idiots. Normally he wouldn't have even come to something like this but he knew it would cheer up Scott.
Scott was his roommate and at one point he would even say friend. Not now. Not anymore. Scott didn't know, but Daniel and Scott's girlfriend, Mandy had been spending a lot of time together and at some point, things turned intimate. It went on like that for a time until the stress of the affair became too much for Mandy and she ended up ending the relationship with Scott. It had been a few weeks and Scott was still heartbroken. Dan felt guilty for what he had done but he knew that no good would come of telling Scott about it. The best he could do for Scott was to hide the fact that his friend betrayed him, or so Dan thought. Dan just wished he could do something to fix things. He would do anything to help Scott get over Mandy and make things right.
That's why Dan got him and Scott tickets to the hypnotist show. Though Dan hated this stuff, Scott loved all that pseudoscience crap. It wasn't much but he could do this much for Scott, thought Daniel.
Suddenly the lights dimmed and a spotlight hit the opening curtain, revealing an odd-looking man dressed in black. He had way too much eye makeup on and his bald head gleamed in the shining light.
The man spoke with a solemn tone, "Welcome ladies and gentlemen. I am Drake Bloodstone.”
Dan sighed as Drake continued, “Tonight we are all explorers. Not explorers of strange jungles or dark tombs but of something much more frightening: the human mind."
"Pffft," escaped Daniel's mouth much to Drake's obvious distaste. Dan didn't realize he had even done it until Scott nudged him.
Dan gave Scott a sheepish, "Sorry."
Bloodstone cleared his throat and then continued. "There is still much to be discovered about the mind and tonight we will plunge deep into the unknown, past the veil of consciousness into eternity."
Daniel rolled his eyes as Drake continued, "To start, I will need a volunteer."
One by one, the stage filled with people from the audience. There were the normal things: people singing, people pretending to be animals, and other mildly embarrassing actions but all and all nothing special.
“Tonight we have journeyed and adventured but our time together is over,” Drake said with open arms.
“Finally,” Dan said quietly. Apparently not quietly enough because Drake looked right at Dan.
“Perhaps, we have time for one more pilgrimage. You sir, please come up here.” The next thing Daniel knew, he was standing on stage.
